Modified Marlin 45-70s. Space age and Tacticool!

I looked at this post a few times, the taste of vomit hasn't left my mouth :puke:

But hey, if you like yours and the stainless one doesn't blow up in your buddies face or the lever break in half when a bear is charging, have at er :D

Not for me, but that means SFA.....

Bartledan, how was the flashlight mount done on the magazine tube? Is it permanent or can you remove it if needed? Was the magazine tube integrity affected? Does the mount touch the barrel? Wondering about this as it could affect barrel harmonics -> point of aim as a result.

Thanks!

That light mount is a work of pure genius. I asked the guy as made it for something different, and he gave me what I really needed.

It slips over the magazine tube, and is held in place by tension on the magazine tube screw, no modification to the gun. How cool is that?

Yes, it touches the barrel, but barrel harmonics and all that jazz really don't come into play in the effective ranges we're talking about. Remember, it's between the screws that hold on the handguard, and join the magazine tube to the barrel. Just not that kind of gun.

The best part is, the switch lands basically right under the thumb, and the light illuminates the front sight, as well as Senor El Grizzly.

It's a terrifically practical setup.

I'll never badmouth anyones opinion of guns and what they like. But I have to admit, I have my apprenhensions. The reciever fluting looks like it took alot of metal pff. I'd be somewhat scared to shoot it. And if you were interested in my opinion, which your probably not, I'm not such a fan. But if you like it...

I trust this gunsmith.

Besides, the receiver is meant to transfer stress between the bolt and your shoulder, not the bolt and the barrel, and no metal has been removed behind the locking "thingie"

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, and the weakest link on that gun is far from being the receiver. It's weakest part is unmodified.

I really like the light mount. Similar to one for the M14S. I'd prefer one mounted below the mag for the purposes of balance. I've mounted them in a similar location on a bear gun in the past in order to illuminate the front sight, so I understand why you went this route. With a light on one side and a buttstock shell carrier on the other side, it would probably balance very well.

As for the silver one, I don't have any concerns about the strength of the receiver with the location of the fluting. The lever makes me nervous though. You can put a lot of torque on that thing when the adrenalin is pumping. I imagine checking it out first hand would put those concerns to rest as well. It does sound like it was well thought out to meet his needs.

Thanks for sharing the pics. :)

I have been waiting for this to happen. :D
Only I would have added a eotech site on a picatinny rail. :D

IMHO anything that adds functionality to a firearm is a good thing.

I alternate between a scope and a red dot depending on what the intended use is that day/night. To heck with the folks that say it's "wrong" to use modern technology on a lever gun. Trap shooters think the same way about shotguns, and that didn't stop me either.

If it truly makes the firearm a better tool for your needs then who cares what the internet critics say. :)

I don't want to find myself facing a bear on a moonless night thinking "I can't see to shoot him, but at least I'll die with my levergun looking the same as everyone else's."

If you want to hunt Bear at night, that's the chance you take. :slap:Save the 'Rambo' add ons and modifications for, say an 870. To take a lever action and try to turn it into something
SPACE AGE and TACTICOOL, :puke:May the ghost of the 'Duke' have mercy on you. As an old sit com personality would put it, "Help me Lord".

Aww, C'mon guys... not our cup O tea, but still cool none the less.
Consider the stainless one a Ti version. It may be ugly, but it suits a purpose...
I've changed my mind, I aint hating :)

COOL??? It looks like part of the front fork of a custom West Coast Chopper, made to commemorate HALLOWEEN!!:puke:

C'mon John, tell us what you REALLY think of it. :p

Nobody said anything about hunting at night but some of us are actually in the outdoors after dark. Is that "uncool" too?

Hopefully The Duke will be too shocked at this stainless rifle or Win94's bedliner to notice my red dot. :D

What do I really think of it? OK, "it's uglier than a mud fence".:puke:

I've spent a fair amount of time in the outdoors at night as well, most of it, probably just a little north of where you're located. Never had the need to pack a 'Space Age Tacticool' firearm with flashlight, at night but that was prior to the country going metric. ;) At worst, over the years at my hunting cabin, I've had a few Bears nibbling on hanging Moose quarters.

He probably wouldn't like my .45-70 GS either, but he might be somewhat forgiving because it isn't 'Tacticool'. And as for noticing 'your' red dot, I guess it all depends on which of 'your' red dot's you're talking about.:p :D

interesting, novel and fun. I like it,wont do it to my 45-70 but its great . rememder this is your property and do with it as u see fit. I boought a 92 that was on a trap line,he altered it alot. It was nolonger a collectable but was what he wanted.Who are we to judge.Have at er
