Moose hunters threatened in Cape Breton Highlands

There are no RCMP five minutes away in Meat Cove.

Meat Cove is one of those places like Grand Manan, NB, that's essentially a "white man's reserve."

In the past, the gene pool didn't see the dilution that other areas have.

That's less of a problem now, but the local culture still reflects the "law unto ourselves" attitude.

Like Grand Manan, there's only one way in and out of the town, and the Mounties know if they poke the bear too much, the locals can make it dangerous or impossible for them to police the area. So, most stuff is just ignored. It takes law enforcement with real testicular fortitude and the willingness to back their words up with muscle or firepower if need be to police such an area.

See also: Grand Manan Riot.

They'd travel a lot longer than 5 minutes by car or boat (High River) to break and enter and take guns from us.
Won't come within a country mile of real criminals who are clearly and brazenly making threats apparently.

Hahaha if I had a dollar for each time I've been threatened with the "I'm gonna make a phone call" line I'd be retired comfortably.

What a bunch of snowflake hypocrite dicks. I would have called their bluff.

Who the hell makes a phone call in 2018 anyways?

That's about the size of it.

The gent involved reported it to the DNR who said there was nothing to be done, and they weren't willing to get involved. Hence going to the media, NSFAH and elected officials.

Should have included this too, the media release from NSFAH...

October 24, 2018

Reference: media release

A group of Nova Scotia hunters who are certified and legally licensed to hunt in the area where they were hunting have reported they were accosted by five men on ATVs (illegal within this area during hunting season). Some of the ATV riders were later identified as Guides who should understand the law and hunting regulations. The hunting group were told to get out of the area as they were not allowed to hunt there without guides. As this assertion is not correct our hunters stated they might stay and hunt. The supposed leader of the guides then struck one of the hunters knocking of his hat and informed the group their trucks would be burned and left a shell if they stayed. The hunters reluctantly left the area.

Upon contacting the local RCMP office they were told that nothing could be done unless charges were actually laid. They called Department of Lands and Forestry local office and were told they needed to talk to the local enforcement officer with NSE. After several attempts they made contact after a day and a half. The enforcement officer told them he could go to the individuals but would be told by them to get lost. There was noting the officer could do that would result in anything positive. He was, therefore unwilling to do anything.

The hunters contacted NSFAH to see if anything could be done about this situation. The Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters (NSFAH) quickly wrote letters to the Premier, Minister of NSE, Minister of DLF and many other Government officials but all we have in to date is an automated reply that Government had received the letters.

Our position is that such instances may result in disaster. The hunters firmly believe they were in physical danger, were exposed to implied extensive property damage and were unable to conduct a legal activity.

The NSFAH want Government to initiate an immediate investigation into this situation and let NSFAH and other concerned individuals know the result.

Yours in Conservation
Travis McLeod – President NSFAH

As a general rule, fighting on someone else's terms when they have advantage is a dumb idea.

It would be far smarter to walk away, then you can come back in the dead of night when no one's expecting you and make an ATV bonfire.

Hypothetically of course. Hypothetically.

They aren't, they were local yokels from Meat Cove outfitters. It was an easy identification since they have their pictures online in a group photo...

Still likely they'll keep getting away with it, the family clan in them there parts just torches RCMP vehicles if they get too bothersome. One of their guides was posting on FB saying, and I quote, "don't like it, don't apply for that zone" in regards to those hunters being harassed for not hiring them. The outfitter's answer was "well, they're on their own time, what they do is their business..." Like getting up before dawn to head out on ATVs and threaten legal hunters, I suppose. Sounds plausible. It's a different world up there in them hills.

This is the same outfitter that was on FB illegally claiming that the whole zone 5 hunt was "closed" this year. They were actually protesting DNR policies - they want tags given to them to sell to Americans, not have them allocated to residents in a draw - but framed it as if the hunt was closed.

FB link or it didn't happen. :)

Here's a link to the Facebook post claiming what these guides do on their own time is their business. A close acquaintance and her daughters spent time up in Meat Cove a few weeks ago hiking through the trails and photographing moose. Sure makes you feel safe knowing that these grey matter deficient folk are patrolling in the area and they don't understand where the lines are drawn. Tourism Nova Scotia at its best. This crap needs to be addressed quickly/

One word comes to mind: SPINELESS

Persecute and scapegoat the weak (gun owners) and molly coddle the big, bad and strong (militant minorities, terrorists, violent criminals) seems to be the mo of many Canadian LEAs.

When it comes to security of the person we’re apparently on our own.

It's generally a dumb idea when there's firearms present, yes absolutely. I've got an interesting past and one thing I know for a fact is that if something is really going to happen 9 times out of 10 you don't get any spouting off about phone calls, it just happens.

Burn em out. Their camps their lodge their atvs. Untill someone steps up theyll continue doing what they do. If the courts fail its up to the citizenry. Just my thoughts

Anything like an honest law abiding citizen taking steps or actions to defend themselves, their homes, families or loved ones will cause the cops to appear out of the woodwork like magic to charge and arrest the victims.
Another Canadian paradigm.

You're drawing the wrong lesson.

The lesson is move to the end of a dirt road in an isolated part of the province, surround yourself with a few hundred of your closest kin, and do as you please.

i ve met the same thing in quebec on crown land while SQs and COs were doing the same and hunting ... nothing new and it is a shame nothing is done up to the time someone will be killed.

A fine bit of extortion.

You're allowed to buy the hunting license but not allowed to actually use it. Someone will eventually get shot over this.

CFO's and CO's have far deeper and daily relationship with guides and outfitters than with the general hunting population. Makes it too easy to turn the other cheek at times as you'll likely be benefiting from that relationship with those buddies next month.
