Moose hunters threatened in Cape Breton Highlands

For sure I'd have snapped a secret picture of them to show authorities. They give cavemen a bad name

Don’t show the so-called authorities;) the pictures.
They’ll crap their pants.
What an abyss of cowardice.
The entire country is predicated on fear.
Amazing.
Why are we taxpayers paying these guys stellar salaries and benefits packages?
Too harass the law abiding apparently.
The real criminals just tell them to eff off.
Pathetic.;)

Late reply but LOL at some of these posts!

Have any of you been to meat cove?

This incident sucks really bad, I would be seriously pissed, but any tough guy talk about getting into it with the locals up there is madness... Sorry! Especially when firearms are concerned, plus you don't think those guys might be armed? It's some real life hatfield/mccoy stuff going on up there, pretty common knowledge that firearms and violence are prevalent.

Read up on the murders/arson up there!

I was just there this summer out of curiosity, beautiful view and a nice spot to have a beer during the day... There's one dirt "road" on the side of a cliff from the nearest "town" that is almost one lane at points and subject to weather conditions, very slow drive and hairpin turns everywhere.

I know for a fact there are around 5 full time RCMP officers to patrol the ENTIRE Cabot trail... If you called the cops it would take them an hour at BEST to come assist. Truly the end of the earth. I also have a relative who used to do social work up there, she said it is very true that even the RCMP don't like going up there and don't have the resources to police the area.

Truly the Canadian equivalent of deliverance, tons of legends about the place... Just sayin!

Yes I am a caper and been there many times with friends living just outside of meatcove. Lets just say it is the closest this west virginia hillbilly has ever been to feeling he is back home and I met nothing but great people just don't cross them same as home for me

Cheers

This came from one of the hunters strange he didnot experience what you did :)

Well, I was asked to be a companion on a non-motorized moose hunt in zone 5, we made arrangements with a friend of ours to camp on his land and access the mountains near meat cove. On Monday morning we started hiking our way up the mountain in hopes of tagging a nice moose, we were instead met by 5 men on atv’s way inside the boundaries of this non-motorized hunt. These five men worked for zzz as guides, they informed us that were not allowed to hunt anywheres in “their” area without a local guide, we were threatened with baseball bats and told our trucks would be burnt and to go ahead and call dnr because the dnr is in their pocket. We called the dnr and rcmp and were told that there was nothing they could do because they make their own rules in meat cove. We lost the first 2 days of our hunt because of these so called “outfitters”. This absolute boils my blood and I truly think that outfitters should lose their guiding licences and I will make sure that every person possible will know what happens up there and I hope that no one will continue to use their guiding services ever again.

I would never advocate violence but I will say it’s a safe bet that these fellas on ATVS will eventually meet someone who does and when that day comes it won’t end well for them.

Nah, they wouldn't.
The First Nations Indians are the only group I know about in Canada with brass balls big enough to face off the Cape Breton rednecks.
Of course the rednecks probably know better than to mess with the Indians.
The typical housebroke, bred for obedience Canuck would roll over and turn the other cheek High River, Caledonia mode no matter what the provocation.
We're nothing if not predictable. That's what the Liberals are counting on when the gun bans start.

Going to be a major altercation soon. Natives don't own Canada but are an integral part of it. Governments of all levels are sh!t scared of them which is despicable. IMO natives operate today like a bunch of whining spoiled rotten teenagers.

I have allot of years of rugby behind me. Played all across Canada; and the sides I have played against from the Cape were always the most violent matches i have been part of. Cappers are good folks but they have no issue visiting violence on those they see as deserving.

Having said that, setting up a sting or ambush on these folks wouldn't be too hard. Def not out of the capabilities of the LEOs in the area. Its the will power they lack.

That's not a bad idea - DNR masquerading as hunters. Perhaps the emergency response teams - they might be up for something like that.

It's too effective so it will never be considered however.

Too funny
They won't go up there as official DNR officers so why in the hell would they go up there as hunters to face anyone
Setting up an ambush in that area is even funnier
Cheers

Trucks have been Burned , campers Stolen , gear Stolen or Destroyed, Traveled to the Bay St Lawrence and Meat Cove area for many years , hell they even Burned a R.C.M.P vehicle one year ( Not During the Moose Hunt ) but still , Shots are fired up there and lots of times it's never reported in fear of retribution and retalitory tactics . Many up there have lengthy records and are not scared to do anything if they feel the need . If anyone thinks for one minute , even on the hunt of a lifetime that it's going be peaceful , well ya better think real hard and wake up , Ive spoke to mounties up there a lot and have been told no one goes to those areas unless they have 3 officers together , even C.O.s travel with the mounties in that same area , DFO travel in group of two when going into Bay St Lawrence , for Frig sakes they don't get half way in on the road going in and the locals know 15 min before they show up , Lots of lookouts up there , So having a truck guard might be good idea and could also cause confrontation for the guy watching over the gear . If people want to stop the Zone 5 moose hunt , trust me they'll find a way Peaceful or Not !

The authorities might not be able to crush opposition in Meat Cove without a massive shooting war that would make the Mad Trapper look like a circus sideshow ... but they could definitely do more, if they had the stones. Which, as we all know, they won't, as your average LEO is scared poopless of real two-sided conflicts. I seriously doubt there are any more Sam Steeles in the force.

Despite the nuttiness of the place, it's one of three places in Atlantic Canada (the other two being Grand Manan and outport Newfoundland) where people are still relatively free to live without undue government interference. Trouble is, if the locals turn on you, you're done. I've seen it happen in relatively pacified areas like Tignish, PEI. That's what happened to Ronald Ross in Grand Manan (deservedly). Your life can be over in an evening if someone decides that's how it's going to be, and it could be over little more than a funny last name. Hey, I remember working in Cape Breton in the late '90s and being told I was a Pollack, despite having lived in Atlantic Canada my whole life and having roots all the way back to the 1840s here. I had the wrong last name. 'Course, I was working in Baddeck, with all the sissified townies, so they didn't really care ...

Very sad when this type of crap goes on. Id like to think hunters would try to get along and support each other during all the negative events going on in Canada and the USA. Obviously jealousy and greed are on some hunters agenda

I tend to agree with that comment and it would be nice to think one day they would, but scumbags like that tend to pick and choose their victims.
POS would never bite off more than they could chew.

The bottom line is, your vehicles are at risk and that is why you have to tread lightly. On the wet coast we got burned out of two camps by the locals, not much you can do when you are on their turf, even if you are legally allowed. It does suck that they can be so blatant about it. Northern Ontario has some serious hillbilly action and many other places as well. Hard to one up the locals, they definitely hold the advantage. Grew up in LaBelle Privince as an anglo so usually had my head up.
