Moose hunters threatened in Cape Breton Highlands

'If we weren't willing to go get a guide ... they were going to burn our vehicles,' says hunter

The Department of Environment is investigating a claim that a group of moose hunters were threatened and blocked from legally hunting in the Cape Breton Highlands. (CBC)

A showdown in the Cape Breton Highlands last week has sparked an investigation by the Department of Environment.

Tyler Hubley of Halifax said he and three other hunters with a hunting licence were travelling on foot within the Polletts Cove-Aspy Fault Wilderness Area, hoping to bag a moose.

"It was 5:30 in the morning, and we were approached by three men on ATVs," said Hubley.

The use of motorized vehicles is prohibited in the wilderness area.

Threats and intimidation
"They asked us where our guide was ...They told us that we needed a guide and that if we weren't willing to go get a guide or take one of them with us, that they were going to burn our vehicles."

A hunting guide is not required in the zone.

Hubley said one of the men approached his friend and flicked his hat.

"We calmed that situation down and we talked probably for 10 minutes, and then we headed off the mountain," he said. "They told us they'd make one phone call and they could have 30 guys. So, not being from the area, we decided that it was our best interest to probably walk away."

Department of Environment is investigating
The incident is a first, according to Troy MacKay, enforcement manager for conservation officers in the eastern region.

"We've had other incidents, not to this nature, that we've had to investigate in those areas. But not with someone actually disallowing someone to go into the hunt."

MacKay said conservation officers could lay two possible charges in this case: interfering with a legal hunt under the Wildlife Act, and operating a vehicle in the wilderness area under the Wilderness Areas Protection Act.

Meanwhile, the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters is calling for speedy action.

Board member Mike Pollard said with moose hunting still underway in the highlands, there's potential for more dangerous confrontations.

"If they had come upon a group of hunters who were already loaded up, ready to hunt, and both parties are armed, that can escalate very, very quickly."

Use a go pro for these situations, because if it is not on video it did not happen. Some groups word is worth more then others.

If the 'aggressors' were native (indigenous) nothing will happen pictures or not.
The current advice is 'walk away, there are other places to hunt'.
Eventually (sooner rather than later) we will run out of 'other places to hunt'.
Whoever the aggressors were this was an act of attempted extortion but some groups have more rights than others because of bureaucratic cowardice.

Unfortunately not with Trudeau.

They aren't, they were local yokels from Meat Cove outfitters. It was an easy identification since they have their pictures online in a group photo...

Still likely they'll keep getting away with it, the family clan in them there parts just torches RCMP vehicles if they get too bothersome. One of their guides was posting on FB saying, and I quote, "don't like it, don't apply for that zone" in regards to those hunters being harassed for not hiring them. The outfitter's answer was "well, they're on their own time, what they do is their business..." Like getting up before dawn to head out on ATVs and threaten legal hunters, I suppose. Sounds plausible. It's a different world up there in them hills.

This is the same outfitter that was on FB illegally claiming that the whole zone 5 hunt was "closed" this year. They were actually protesting DNR policies - they want tags given to them to sell to Americans, not have them allocated to residents in a draw - but framed it as if the hunt was closed.

I know one of the guys. I went to high school with him and he lives by my parents now. Growing up with him, im guessing they were native(or some real life serious hillbillies) and armed. He wast a trouble maker but not many messed around with him.

My rifle would have been shouldered and each ATV would have a bullet through the engine.

Then within an hour or two another 30 members of the hillbilly clan would track you down to exact punishment, and your truck would be a smoking frame on the ground if you made it back to it.

Where are the RCMP we're paying over $90K per year?
They'd be on the spot to arrest any one of US in 5 minutes if we used a gun to defend our homes from thugs.
They need to do their f'king jobs. Maybe break into the hillbillies homes and take their guns High River style.
Guess real crooks who shoot back are a different story.

There are no RCMP five minutes away in Meat Cove.

Meat Cove is one of those places like Grand Manan, NB, that's essentially a "white man's reserve."

In the past, the gene pool didn't see the dilution that other areas have.

That's less of a problem now, but the local culture still reflects the "law unto ourselves" attitude.

Like Grand Manan, there's only one way in and out of the town, and the Mounties know if they poke the bear too much, the locals can make it dangerous or impossible for them to police the area. So, most stuff is just ignored. It takes law enforcement with real testicular fortitude and the willingness to back their words up with muscle or firepower if need be to police such an area.

I can't can't think of a better way to promote and reap the financial rewards of hunting and the use of guides in your area. These guys are brilliant and obviously well educated.
