Moose with 7.62 X 39

And yet over the years I have known plenty of well seasoned hunters who have nothing more then (or returned to owning only) a 30/30 and they tag out and have full freezers at the end of each season.

1) Moose are not hard to kill.

2) Old timers used 25-35's to take moose regularly.

If that's what u gots to use then go with it, I say...

I think I will. Like I said I can only shoot calves because adult tags are impossible to get. (in the event I had one I would use something bigger like my .35 Remington) I like the thought of stalking and possibly taking a moose calf or whitetail with the little CZ carbine in close cover.

In my native Laos, we dont have real hunting rifles and banteng are taken with 7.62x39(AK's and SKS's) and even M1 carbine. Much tougher than moose and they go down. Mind you most shots in the jungle are under 100 yrds..more like 50 yrds and its not spray and pray. All careful placed shots. We have VERY limited ammo supply and most ammunition is from stashed stockpiles during the civil war and wasting ammo is not an option. For moose, preferably not but you could do it if needed say it was the rifle in hand at the moment. Shot placement is key!!!

Why risk a $1000 hunt on a $100 gun? se enough gun- the game deserves a quick kill. (JMHO)

Please tell me where I can find a $100 gun in 7.62x39? Even a USED Chinese SKS' cost $120 at best.

Lots of good bolt gun choices or even the CZ 858 will take a Moose at under 100yards if you do your part.

marstar was offering 75 when you bought other stuff, not long ago

i watched an old indian fella drop a bull moose from a canoe at about 150 feet with an old russian sks. one shot in the boiler put him down and one behind the ear for good measure, just after we paddled up on him.
so a fella needs to decide on his own if the conditions are good to do such a thing.
moose can very easy to kill if you do it right but everyone knows a horror story about the one that got shot with the newest super mag and ran three miles in to the bush never to be found or seen again...

A former co-worker of mine shot an absolute slobberknocker of a moose with his M77 (pretty little stainless compact job) in 7.62x39 probably about 10 or more years ago. It would be a bit light for my tastes but I feel pretty confident that it would work nicely so long as the bullet was adequate and the range was not too extreme.

"..................as long as the bullet was adequate and the range was not too extreme."
And therein lies the rub. What bullet is adequate and what range is too extreme?I think the 7.62X39 is a bit on the "light" side for moose hunting for my tastes as well.As with all hunting bullet placement is paramount, however, when I take my 30/06 out moose hunting I'm using a rifle that is miles ahead of the 7.62X39 ballistically speaking at all ranges, and in particular beyond short ranges.
If I was stuck and had to use a7.62X39 for hunting moose for some reason then I guess I would use one. But personally, and this is just my opinion,I believe there are several other calibers I would reach for first. We owe it to the moose.

wonder if someone would be eager to post about using a caliber they knew was small for the game, and it turned in to a horror story... my point being, if someoine kills a moose with a 22lr, one shot, they would have something to brag about. ive heard of people putting 10-15 22lr rounds into deer that ran off... didnt read THAT on the interwebs though.... now if you use a caliber that is known to be appropiate for the game, and it doesnt (or you dont) do its job, then there is not as much guilt in making that public. "the round failed, not me" as apposed to "i should have used an appropriate caliber, i fudged up"

Wholly cats!

6 pages. The OP clearly asked if anyone had...a few "I know someone who has" posts, one I witnessed it, and many opinions...I'm only posting now to "sub", as I'm curious too!

Has a CGN'er knocked down a moose using a 7.62x39? Not curious if you should, or could, but if you have.
