Moose with 7.62 X 39

Wholly cats!

6 pages. The OP clearly asked if anyone had...a few "I know someone who has" posts, one I witnessed it, and many opinions...I'm only posting now to "sub", as I'm curious too!

Has a CGN'er knocked down a moose using a 7.62x39? Not curious if you should, or could, but if you have.

i bet not everyone thinks you need a magnum of sort or that someone should go and buy a new gun

i know how it is up north its thick brush and when calling moose it can get right on top of you and its still too dumb to know you are there at 100 yards and under the 7.62x39 will do the job with the right shot placement

I have my Grandfather's .32 Spec. model 94. I know it took Moose (in/around Kirkland Lake) as my Mom, Aunt, and Uncle all ate...I know a few folks in that neck 'o' the woods that carry a 30-30 today.
...I don't think the moose have changed...

OP asked if anyone had taken a Moose with 7.62x39, and the closest we've gotten is one witness, and a few "I know someone"'s.

Has anyone actually got TSX load data? Every time i call and e-mail them I don't get anything back, but I'm sitting on a box of bullets I can't use. I'd buy the Barnes reloading book, but it's almost easier for me to just go to the store and peek in the book and memorize 2-3 loads instead of paying $50.00

I'm guessing it's just something like 30 grains of H335 but I'm not willing to test it out because I have such beautiful hands

seat out as far as you can and use load data for the same weight

Normally that's what I'd do, but this is a long ass copper bullet so the rules are different. If this was a partition I'd just use whatever data I could find for FMJ's or whatever in the same weight and make the cartridge longer with a grain or two less powder, but I don't think that's good science for these bullets. They're constructed a lot differently as well, they're triple grooved for her pleasure, and may not seat too well in the magazine if mr pointy tip is sticking out too much.

Exactly, get a .308, 30.06, 7mm RM...even a .303 beats a 7.62X39.
Use a proper calibre for the game you're hunting.
EVEN a .303??!!
That ois one cartridge that is so wrongly bashed it's funny.
The ballistics of the .303 British are anything but minimum.
As far as the 7.62X39 goes, I have a friend who has killed two smaller moose and a bunch of bears and deer with his.
As far as using a bigger cartridge, where is the minimum and who is going to name it?
I will not hunt with a belted magnum or a cartridge that has a 200 grain bullet and magnum style velocities, but feel quite comfortable usi g a 6.5X55 to kill moose with.

these magnum people also think you cant hunt with a millsurp.

not everyone has the money too buy a new gun but they dont need too theres plenty of good guns that will do the job and make a 1 shot kill the 7.62x39 will do it a .30-30 will do it the a common cal used in other countrys(the swedish like this cal for hunting) is 6.5x55 and it does the job just fine.

you are nothing without accuracy and knowing you can hit the game your shooting at in the right spot these magnum guys like to take the iffy shots thats way thay use the cals with more power because they are impatient.

they also like to try and shoot game out far(300 yards +) well it may be different where you are but here in ontario atleast up north in the moose woods its thick brush common shots 0 to 100 yards (when i mean 0 i mean it nothing like having a 1300lb bull almost on top of you )

Yeah, the Swiss are overrun by moose...........or perhaps you mean Sweden? ;)

But the 7.62x39 is anemic compared to the 6.5 Swede. Sure you could use the Russian for moose, my question would be why? If the reason is to see if it would work, then that's a poor attitude.

And if it's fine out to a 100 yard max, you have to be disciplined enough to limit yourself to that range, even if a huge bull happens to step out at 250. Are you?

yep i dont take a shot i cant make i can also control my self and not pull a shot because i got excited ive never gut shot a deer or moose yet with what ever ive used shotgun, rifle, crossbow i also have used buckshot on deer

I think I will. Like I said I can only shoot calves because adult tags are impossible to get. (in the event I had one I would use something bigger like my .35 Remington) I like the thought of stalking and possibly taking a moose calf or whitetail with the little CZ carbine in close cover.

Darryl.

We have a bull tag. You have an Argo. You can bull hunt all you want with us, 7.62x39 or not ;)

I can shoot minute of moose to at least 300yds. I certainly wouldn't want to limit myself to 100yrds because of the gun I carried.

I load 21gr of IMR 4198 and a Sierra 150gr .311 for my son's SKS It has 4 shots touching at 75 yards off the bags.A 150 can be driven up to 2100-2200fps.......Harold

trust me its just not because of the cal that your limited to 100 the moose woods of northern ontario are thick 100 yard is max in most places ;)

you have to hit it in the hart/lungs to bring it down quick 300 yards is a iffy shot and if you cant get a proper shot even with a bigger cal you are still not going to kill it on the spot
