Moose with 7.62 X 39

I'm getting more relaxed these days about appropriate cartridge choices for any given game. I like the idea of a big case .375 for moose myself, but a .224/55 gr Remington PSP that hits a moose in the mellon will work. A local guy here used his 7.62X39 Ruger bolt gun to hunt moose and caribou, and took both with no losses that I'm aware of. If I was going to try it, I suppose I'd load up some 130 gr TTSXs over a load of 4198.

trust me its just not because of the cal that your limited to 100 the moose woods of northern ontario are thick 100 yard is max in most places ;)

you have to hit it in the hart/lungs to bring it down quick 300 yards is a iffy shot and if you cant get a proper shot even with a bigger cal you are still not going to kill it on the spot

That's it exactly. It's those "other places" that I would carry more gun for.;)

NOTE: This is not a "will this take down a moose thread...." it is only a simple question. Has anyone on the site taken a moose with the 7.62x39 round? If you have, how was the performance and the details, range, size etc.

regards, Darryl

Sorry bud,

Bottom line, I'm guessing no CGN'r has personally shot a moose with a 7.62x39
Peace,

Hakx.

no need just control your self and dont shoot at anything over the limit

use what you have a old sks or a mosin will kill a moose, bear, deer just fine the way it served in the military.

everyone now has magnumitis when back in the day people put plenty of game on the table with proper shot placement with cal's like 6.5x55,.303,
.30-30 and countless other rounds.

7.62x39 is equal to the .30-30 and .303 moose have been taken with .22's and buckshot.

too many are out for trophys that they will shoot it at 500 yards because they want hugh set of antlers i dont want to see the future of hunting

By all means if that's all you have limit yourself and use it. BUT, if you have something else that can extend your limits past that of a 7.62X39, why not? And if someone wants a set of horns attached to their dinner, so what? Or are you subtly trying to tell us you can't shoot worth a damn past 100yards? Or what, exactly?

So how many years have you been hunting?;)

lets see that would be 8 years now and thats about 10 deer(both bucks and doe's) 5 have been with crossbow and im going after 2 more this year with corssbow. i also have 2 moose under my belt both taken with the .303 and 174gr soft point handload's(hornady round nose) countless coyotes,3 fox's,countless squirrels and rabbits and countless pest birds (starlings, sparrows, crows, doves and pigeon)

i was tought under old values putting meat on the table is number 1

i have taken 2 deer with a sks 1 with a mosin m44 and 1 with the lee enfield 1 with a old 12ga double and 00 buck

I have better choices available to me but I'd shoot a moose with a 7.62x39 if I had soft point bullets. I admit I don't hunt swamp donkies but The places I hunt bear I've seen 3 moose. 1 bull 1 cow and 1 calf. Bull was 50-60 yards broadside cow and calf 80-90 yards broadside in a watery meadow. All 3 could have easily been taken witha shot to the lungs. Paper ballistics isn't everything. The good old 4570 took a lot of bison even at long range yet on paper it can't compare to the belted mags. Shot placement and bullet construction are the important factors not the size of the case

This one please!!!!

I shot a cow,and calf with a mini-30 quite a few years back. About 80yds they stood up in a bit of a blow down that I was walking into to start a drive..I fired two rounds at the cow, and she went down within 20ft of where last hit. I then took one shot at the calf that went about the same distace before falling..

When we skinned them, the cow had two bullets about 4'' apart under the hide on the far side completely flat, almost the size of a dime(estimate)..The calf had a through and through..I was using 123gr factory Rem...

dunnoo how I missed THAT on my pg. 6 post...

You can have my goat, [when it gets here...] I don't deserve it.

Neither do I:(....

I would have never had the story to tell If a friend had not shown up for a short hunt without a rifle..I lent him my .280, just for the day, and ended up with the fun gun (my mini)...Never did I intend on using it for moose, let alone seeing one when i did use it..Just by chance, what happened, happened:eek:..
