Moose?

basicaly ya. if you ever hunted you would no the difference.

Hmmmmmm have you? A Gut shot is just that! No matter the cal, the difference is NIL. If YOU hunted YOU would know that!

I'd buy a box of each the partitions and the tsx and see which shot better then go kill a moose with it and post lots of pictures.
I would rather hunt with a rifle I am familiar with then try and get comfortable enough with something else in the short time we have before our even shorter moose season.

I have taken 4 moose with my 7mm-08 using barnes tsx. This one was taken at around 240 yards. Good luck on your hunt this fall.

I've come to like shooting lots. I like to know what my rifle can do at 100 yds 200 yds 300 etc etc. I also like to know what I can do so i shoot off hand and on the bench. If you are familiar with your 7-08 it will be a moose killing machine!

For what it's worth, noted Maine Moose Hunting guide, Dave Kelso, indicates in his book "Moose Hunting: Calling, decoying, and stalking" that the 7mm-08 is an adequate caliber for moose.

Other than more noise and more recoil, you won't gain much from a 308. 7 mags kill moose, .308 kill moose, so a 308 necked down to 7mm will to.

You will just look classier with the 7-0h 8.

Ok, I got drawn for my 2012 New Brunswick Moose tag:D. I really like my Kimber 84m 7mm-08 and like/use Federal Premium 140grn Ballistic Tips for deer hunting. I do not reload so my question is -- will I be under-gunned for moose with factory 7mm-08, 140's TSX or Nosler Partitions. The Noslers will give the best energy at 1750fp as apposed to the TSX at 1452fp -- not a great distance. Thought of buying a 08 or 06 but for a hunt that I may never get drawn for again? Most shots here are well inside 200 yds to very close.
Thanks in advance!

Took my moose last year with 140 gr. Accubonds out of the 7-08 with no problems..

By the way Grouser, your old 94 looks good in my gun case!

HAHAHAHAHA if only you knew, if only you knew...

OK TJT; How many moose have you actually shot????
20, 30, or 1?

It does not take a cannon to kill a moose, regardless of the mooses' size.

I started hunting moose in the early 1960's, and have certainly shot my share over the years.

I have killed moose with one shot, using the following chamberings.:
6mm Remington, 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 264 Win Mag, 7x57, 7mm Rem Mag, 308 Win, 303 Brit, 30-06, 300 mags of several flavors, [300WSM, 300H&H, 308 Norma Mag, 30-338, 300 Win Mag] 8x57, 338 Win Mag.

Only moose I had to shoot repeatedly was early in my moose hunting career, when I hit him a bit too far back with the first shot from a 30-06. [To my eternal embarassment, he was down after 5 shot were fired.] :(

I have taken 3 Elk with one shot each [much tougher than moose, IMHO,] with the 7x57
I saw a younger, very accomplished hunter take a large cow elk at 375 yards with the 7-08 and the 140 Accubond....one shot through the lungs, and dead within 30 yards.

To say one is undergunned with a 7-08 and a decent bullet is utter nonsense!!

Regards, Eagleye.

I always love these 7mm-08 threads... one shot and two steps at 328 yards...

Hornady is my favorite bullet for game hunting.

20 point 1100 LBS (DNR chart - live weight estimate) 7MM-08 Nosler 140 grain out of my Kimber Classic.

Good looking moose! Nicely done. So how far was the shot, and how far did it go after the shot? For that matter, how many shots did you dump into him? What Nosler bullet did you use, the Partition? At any point of your hunt did you wish you had something bigger? 300 or 338 Win Mag maybe?

One shot at 50 yards (he was facing me as he came to my call). He went about 25 yards -- he immediately wheeled away from me and started wobbling right away. I had a borrowed 338 but chose to use the 7mm-08 instead because, I was confident in the Kimber's ability to shoot. I bought a box each of 140's TSX and Nosler Partition's. The TSX shot from a stable position at 50 yards 3" high and 1" group. The Nosler's shot 3" high, 4 shots into the same hole -- moved out to 100 yards and they shot less than 1/2 inch (thus the confidence). The Ruger 338 Kicked like hell and shot 3 inches at 100. I definitely didn't feel under gunned with the 7mm. A couple of days later, having a coffee at TH's, I guy told me that a 7mm-08 wouldn't kill a moose --- maybe but ya had ta hitm right. I asked him what would happen if I hit him wrong with a 300 win mag -- no answer. I told him he was reading too much shooting magazine propaganda -- bigger is better

The New Brunswick moose are quite small compared to moose in other provinces.

I have had one shot kills there with 303Brit, 338Mag (at 5yards) and 7x57. Only the 338 had a premium bullet.

Your rifle and ammo choice sounds perfect. Shot placement is 98% of the kill.

No problem with the 7mm08. Having seen the results of rapid expansion with a Nosler ballistic tip on a mule deer my choice would be a better constructed bullet. The Federal Premiums offer a number of choices and as previously suggested the Nosler Partition or the Barnes would give better performance in the 140 grain range.

I agree here. Do not use any bullet that uses a wedge style tip as those are gimmicks that highlight poor low cost design. Get one designed for proper expansion. I have also observed irregular performance of Nosler's partition bullets in magnums but in the non-magnum category they too should be fine.
