Mosin Nagant Sporter Project

Why not just buy a sporter? Will shoot better with less work, cost less, will use more available ammo longterm and you won't loose money on the gun.

Am I in for some abuse or are you just trying to get your post-count up?

Wrong sub-forum? (I know some milsurpers don't like sporterizing)
We usually don't abuse people trying to get information about their firearm.
As for the wrong sub-forum, until there's a special one named BubbaLand, you'll have to put up with reactions from dedicated Milsurp collectors who feel chopping away at a good milsurp firearm is not the proper thing to do.
Have at it anyway, it's yours...
PP.

Not trying to be a smart ass but...

You could save money and time, and probably get better hunting results, by buying a brand new Savage 200...

This. Why butcher a piece of history, which unless you're a gunsmith will likely result in an obviously half-assed-looking bubba job that'll catch you flak from both hunters and milsurp dudes when you can get a better hunting rifle for less at the local gunstore?

that is utter bs

Anyone with an opposable thumb and the willingness to try and the patience to do good work can produce a great milsurp sporter. just go as slow as you need to, plan your work and don't compromise your vision of the finished product. it is easy as long as you are willing to try.

Anyone with an opposable thumb and the willingness to try...

And anyone with a working brain would think twice about discussing the destruction of Milsurps in a forum dedicated to their preservation. But I guess that's just too much to ask. Such a a shame it is to see threads where enthusiasts like LouthePou and so many others painstakingly repair the abuse of people like the OP only to read a thread like this one where someone has the gall to ask HOW to butcher a rifle, and then to to get so many responses. I really wonder how much longer this particular sub-forum will operate if it is frequented by the likes of that, how many people will be willing to ID rare rifles or give advice on how to field strip some obscure treasure when they know peppered among the threads will be one like this one. I know I'm going to spend less time here. Some may think that's a good thing, but I don't particularly care for them or their opinion. The ones I do care about probably won't be here much longer, either.

Well, I'm sorry if you're insulted by my thread. I wasn't aware that this subforum was only for those "dedicated to their preservation" - I thought that just as with the other sub-forum this one was created for a category of guns, not for a certain type of gun owner.
But you're right. How dare I butcher one of those rare Mosin Nagants. If I destroyed mine, there would probably be only, what, fifteen million left?
Seriously, you're overreacting. It's not like I'm trying to sporterize a G98 or Lebel, or some other Milsurp which actually has anything remotely resembling value.

+1 Good post. :agree:

... We're all gun nutz right? Can't we all just.... get a long? The OP was going to buy two - one to keep original and one to "modify" to his particular goals.

To bubba a non numbers matching, run of the mill round receiver mosin 91/30 isn't the end of the world in my opinion.

These can be had for $125 or so from Tradex. If anything reducing the number of original Mosin's will increase the value for those of us that keep ours original.

Getting back on topic. Don't bend the existing straight bolt. It will be way too short to be of any use and you'll end up dishing out for a proper bent bolt.
If $$$ is a concern (as it was for me) I would suggest to buy a S&K scout scope mount and a long eye relief scope. This is the route I went and I'm in the process of putting the pieces together now.

After looking around a lot online the scout scope concept really grew on me.

In case you haven't noticed

this is a free society. I or anyone else can discuss anything we like. If you don't like it don't read it. You and skirsons should get together and fondle your matching numbers milsurps. As for me not having "half a brain" well anyone can type insults from the privacy of their home without the courage needed to say them to someones face. It takes no creativity or imagination to polish old guns. If everyone through history had the same attitude as you we would never have invented cartridges or semiautomatic rifles. You and your buddy skirsons are trolls. review the posting guidelines for CGN you will find that personal insults are forbidden.

That's funny. You and the OP are the biggest trolls in a forum for people who love milsurps and hate to see them destroyed.

Gunsmithing section, hunting firearms section, other options for discussing tour project. I believe you shouldn't be surprised - disapointed maybe, but not surprised - to see folks react in a negative way to your project in the milsurp section, for obvious reasons.

Hey, if that project is one that must see completion, why not tale the time to fond a pre-butchered one?

I believe he posted in this section because the rifle he is discussing is a milsurp. Seems a logical place to post it.
As regards alteration, should he purchase the rifle it would be his property and therefore free to do with it as he pleases.
There are museums for collections. Life is finite and to amass a collection of anything to me seems pointless.
I do understand the collectors here and respect what they do but others feel differently and to try and bend them to your will is unfair.

However, the OP simply made a mistake in the location of his post. Perhaps a CGN rule can be enacted whereby no alteration threads be posted in the Milsurp section. This would keep all happy.

There are plenty of sportered nagants around to use for a project, no need to cut another one. I think a-steyr 95 has a line on a bottomless pit of sporters, try dropping him line.

the thing is that if he put it elsewhere

it would most likely get moved here anyway. There is no need for skirsons and rattus to come down on folks for enjoying this hobby as they see fit. The title of this post made it very clear what was to go on. If these two don't like the subject then the polite thing to do is A) not read it or B) read it and not comment. there doesn't need to be more rules just more courtesy and tolerence for differing views. If you have nothing nice to say then say nothing. simple easy no problem.

This is the way I see it - the OP said he wants to pick up two Nagants, one to keep original and one to play with. So he does have respect for history etc. as I understand it. Now, if the second one is used to learn, gain experience and ultimately enjoy... instead of spending rest of its hardware life in a crate burried in some dark basement corner... then what is the big waste?

It's not like he's going to butcher a minty, matching, unfired one-of-a-kind specimen that was used by imperial guards while defending Tsar's palace from the red deluge??? Garbage in-garbage out - not a big deal. Everybody try to chill, no?

This is the milsurp forum, altered or not. I didn't see anything about it being dedicated to the preservation of military rifles only. Maybe I missed it somewhere. I personally don't even like seeing SKS's modded, but I'm not going to get in anyones face over it. Unless its an SVT. Maybe.
:)

:agree:

Sporting a milsurp today is inexcusable knowing what we know now. Mitchell's Mausers and Globeco ring a vomit inducing bell.
