Mosin Roulette...

I played roulette and won. I picked out a dark finish 91/30 on Westrifle's site and it was exactly as depicted in their photo's. Not so much roulette at all. The "pick your own" option at Westrifle is great. This one's a 1940 Izhevsk with strong rifling. The end caps on the fore-wood look like brass, but me thinks they are just bare metal covered with shellac that makes them yellowy brass goodness like. It slugged out to .312.

I received one last week that pretty much looks the same with the brass ends. Mine was a 1938 Izzy with very shiny and heavy bore, and the re-crown was a late factory repair. I'll fire it up this weekend. Also noted that the bayonet has matching serial number.
One of my buddies suggested that these $110 specials were probably "picked over" and the better ones taken out of the batch, but I tend to argue this. From the one I received and the pictures and comments of other members who have also purchased a rifle from this batch, these are good looking rifles. They shoot well and there are not a lot of things that go wrong with a Mosin.
I think Westrifle has a healthy supply of these old Mosins and they are clearing them out for a really good price. Its my opinion that this is probably the deal of the decade for milsurp rifles. Rifles for an awesome price, surplus ammo is cheap and plentiful, excellent quality commercial ammo for hunting... If you've ever wanted a Mosin, now is the time.
If this is roulette, then I won.

Just got this from a guy, I payed 100$ for all of it, including bayo and cleaning kit, and also 20 rounds.
I'll try to go shoot it and I'll report back. Bore is shiny, bolt is matching, pretty happy with the purchase.
Got my 39' 91/30 from West rifle yesterday...pretty fast seeing as how I actually ordered it over the long weekend!

So after having taken my Russian brunette to the range a couple more times I have come to the conclusion that it's a bit of a mixed bag:
First off, the rifle shoots great groups at 110 yards. I was able to achieve about 2.5" groups with cheap MFS ammo, that's about as good as I'll get with iron sights. Furthermore, the bolt is extremely smooth and I have not had a single FTF.
Still, the rifle shoots way too high, up to 19" at 110 yards - however, I gather that that's a rather well known and common issue with Mosins and is quite easily be fixed with some tubing/wire insulation. The thing that annoys me a lot more is that the windage is way off as well - about 10-15" to the left at 110". And that's even though the front sight has already been adjusted a good bit to counterbalance. If I adjusted it anymore it would be 50% or more off the base which wouldn't be stable and looks crappy.
Since I'm not planning on installing any optics on this particular rifle I'd love to hear any suggestions you guys might have for what I could do to fix that.
That aside, upon closer inspection, I discovered a cross etched into the side of my rifle's stock on the left side at about the height of the trigger. Now, it might just be a scratch (though it looks deliberate) but does anyone know whether this is a arsenal marking or whether it is more likely to have been done by the previous owner?

Have you drifted out the rear sight axis pin? Some of them are notched at rebuild to tighten up the rear sight. Depending where that notch ends up on the axis pin (if you have one), the windage can be affected. Worth checking.
I guess it can't hurt to try. But since I'm planning on taking this rifle into the bush this hunting season that's not really a solution for me. I prefer to shoot my deer, not spear it!
