Mountain Rifle with Grizzly capability..your thoughts?

I've PERSONALLY known 2 (TWO)!!!!! people who were mauled and KILLED by bears, so your stats mean diddly squat to me. I won't be a third. Just in case you were wondering who they were , A young boy (17) Kyle Harry , who I worked with his mom, and Mary Beth Miller, who I work with her sister. Totally unrelated to each other, but nonetheless, my story is one of BEING CAREFUL, and never be in the wilderness without a GUN.

What class of bears killed those people?

I would never be in the bush without a gun if there were even the slightest chance of an encounter with a bear or the Blair Witch.

You guys are being pretty hard on Sheep, he's got an opinion and some studies to validate it, more than a lot of opinions expressed on here that I've seen. I personally don't agree, and I haven't spent a lifetime with firearms to squirt seasoning in a bears face. Given what I have witnessed at a bear defense course I watched for a bit at the range, waiting for them to wrap it up, I'd have to say 9 of the 10 there would be better off with bear spray. Most could barely hit the backstop with the 870s and slugs and after 1 or 2 shots most were bouncing them off the ground anywhere from 20-50 ft in front of themselves. It was the most pathetic thing I have ever watched relating to firearms. Guaranteed they have much greater experience with Raid house and garden and Raid wasp spray so pepper spray wouldn't be a big stretch.......but absolutely none of them should have been allowed any where near a firearm.
In this forum of highly trained and qualified and very well practiced riflemen of course bear spray is an insult.........we can all dismount our slung rifle and hit a mosquito on the fly in the eye at 50 mtrs in 1/100 of a second so no bear would ever stand a chance against us anyway..............;);):p:p

Like I said before, I personally never worry about bears, hell let them worry about me, I'm way more dangerous and deadly than they could ever be. I doubt there is a grizzly out there that has killed as much sh!t as I have!!!

I have no problem with anybody having an opinion and participating in a discussion even if I don't agree, but when you start calling people Rambo and wannabes I have no time for you and will treat you with the same contempt you show for others.

LOL...might be this is the real reason your wife carries bear spray!!! :)

I have been saving up and am hoping to get a new rifle that I can use for alpine hunting (mule deer, sheep, goat, caribou) and would still like the punch of being able to shoot a Grizzly if I got lucky enough to get the draw and/or had one running me down.

I have currently an old Tikka 7mm Mag but with scope it weighs upwards of 11.5 lbs...very accurate but nearly kills me carrying it in the mtns. I have a Rem. Model 7 in 7mm-08 with a Leupold VXIII and it comes in at about 7.4 lbs total but a bit small for larger game.

I was thinking of getting a 300 Win Mag and topping it off with a Night Force NXS 2.5-10x42 or a Leica ER 2.5-10x42.....the only thing I am struggling with is what make/model of rifle to get. I was thinking of the Tikka T3 but after reading some posts about the less than desireable stock design resulting in large felt recoil I am leaning away from this gun. The Sako Finn Lite would be nice but I was hoping to take that extra $$ at the Tikka price point and put it into nice optics.

What do you guys have for a Mtn. Rifle setup?....any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thx BCBairdo
Weatherby has come out with a new rifle called the Terramark. It's lightweight, has a earth tone colour, range certified for sub moa and is chambered for the 300 Weatherby. What more can you ask for? It's range of kill is from mentally challenged sheep/goats to ferocious teddy bears.

I get a little tired of all you testosterone inflated rednecks talking about injuring bears just for being bears... it is their home, "you" are the invader... leave the guns and spray at home... bears are mostly just misunderstood... enter the forests with love and understanding and hugs... you can deflate a bad situation with a cheerful hello and wave... attitude is everything...

Am I the only one who's noticed that one of sheephunter's sponsor's on his show sells..............

Bear spray! ;)

Good thing the thread wasn't optic related, we'd be hearing how Zeiss is the end all to mountain scopes.

LOL...you forgot to add ...I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles that everyone would
eat and be happy...

Pick a decent sheep/elk round in a light rifle you shoot well and use good bullets.

I carry a 7-08 loaded with ttsx Barnes and am never really worried about it. I have only killed one Grizzly - at about 100 yards with a 200 grain tsx at around 2950 out of a 300 wby.

I have to admit - The damn thing tore off 200 yards through the bush with the top of his heart gone and the offside shoulder broken. That was impressive.

But he would have been just as dead with 150 grainer out of the 7-08.

My guess is a 7-08, 308, 280, 30-06 in a lightweight rifle that you are able to shoot well enough and practice with would work.

These are more or less all in the same class at 100 yards, but shoot that same grizz at that range with a 9.3 X 62, a .375 H&H or Ruger, and better yet, a .45-70 with good bullets and you've got a dead bear at 100 yards. I hunt blacks every year and don't trust any of 'em... nor do I trust spray! My longtime partner is a retired CO, but while still a CO he was carrying bear spray on his belt. I had a can in the back pocket of my jeans. We were putting in bait for when the season opened. Bears were attending. He looked at my can (Canadian Tire Special!) and said he'd NEVER use it! I asked what was in his - he wouldn't tell me but said it was special issue for the CO's and was 10X more powerful than what I was putting some confidence in! I've never carried it since! But ALWAYS a medium to big-bore rifle or a 12-gauge with slugs.

As a mountain rifle, I'd choose what I mostly now carry... that being my T3 Lite in 9.3 X 62. Using a 250gr AccuBond or 286 Partition, it's plenty for anything in North America at any reasonable range. Weighing just 7.6 lbs fully loaded with scope and sling, it's a delight to tote all day long. The trajectory is like a 180gr load in a .30-06. WHY IS "EVERYONE" SO SENSITIVE OVER RECOIL THAT'S NO MORE, AND OFTEN LESS THAN, A 12-GAUGE SLUG LOAD? We accept it in our shotguns and groan, moan and sputter over recoil that's about the same in rifles!!!???

My advise? GET OVER IT! You won't die! But you might if unwilling to learn to shoot a rifle suited to bear country!
