My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

The weather is looking up and I can now lay prone a bit more comfortably since I don't have to shoot over a snow bank.
Tikka t1x, bone stock
Bushnell 3200 5-15×40
50 yards
Lapua center-x
Slight breeze
7°c
Caldwell bags lying prone

Group sizes:
.273"
.217"
.419"
.225"
.340"

Average = .295"
Groups were measured farthest edge to farthest edge then .218" was subtracted from that number.

Nice shooting. I added you to the successful list

Well, that's definitely a reason. It would give you easy visual confirmation from the bench that your group was under a particular size, but you could also easily mill that with your reticle, right? And you still have to measure it at the end to score, so does it save any effort? Would you not achieve the same end with that 1/4" circle a half inch below your POA? It's an easy reference, for sure, but that doesn't mean it has to be at your POI. Much like a BR target has scoring rings at the POI well below the POA.

I see we made suspiciously similar targets for shooting. 22s at 50 yards lol... mine are the same but without the crosshair lines. Intended for the Sightron MOA2 reticle to center the 1/4 MOA dot and have the crosshair ends touch each corner. What's the striping for?

What about the group that's above the center? For 20% of those groups the inner bull didn't work and it had to be measured anyway...

Outstanding shooting, in any case. That's great. How did you sort the ammo?

My scope is just a plain fine crosshair, no mil references. There were many targets I left in the trash at the range, I wouldn't bother measuring if it didn't have a chance at being 1/4". The striping was just my printer running low on ink, hehe. The first group hit high because I just switched ammo, then a scope adjustment was made for the remaining 4 groups. Ammo was sorted rim-ogive with the G3 measuring tool. It doesn't hurt, though I can't say it makes a definite difference. Yeah, sure I could have offset the circle from the POA, but, that's the way I wanted to do it.

Finally had a target that I didn't mess up today, except I didn't think #3 was going to be under .5", so I kept going just for practice. Shooting left to right, top to bottom, and I had all 5 groups. I'll try again next time I'm at the range on a calm day. Group sizes in the order I shot them are:
0.418"
0.349"
0.450"
0.272"
0.409"
Should have stopped here, but I didn't think I'd made the cut with #3 and kept shooting.
0.557"
0.227"
0.420"
0.533"
0.628"

I was shooting my Norinco NS522 with SK standard and a cheap Simmons 6-24 on it. Didn't take a picture of the rifle at the range, so here's one from last summer.

Nice shooting!
Looks like a nice target design for shooting groups

Thanks. It's one that was on the board when I got there, but it didn't work as well as I thought it might. Hard to tell when the cross hairs are centered between the lines. I'm going to bring better ones next time.

That NS522 has a great-looking stock and the target shows some very nice groups.

As you knew after looking more closely, you should have stopped after five groups, as the results were in the money. The rifle is quite capable.

Thank, yes, the biggest issue is the nut behind the trigger. Oh well, just have to keep trying. Having the target board at 50 yards vs 50m would make it a bit easier too, but that's how my range is set up. Thanks on the stock, I made it last summer. The one it came with wouldn't sit very well on the sandbags, so I figured I'd have a go, and laminated some 3/4" birch I had in the shop.

thanks you ,

I keep it at ambient temperature usually over colder temperature I use SK Biathlon or Lapua Biathlon that have proven more stability through my rifles below 0C and we are kind of in the range of temperature where I started testing Center x and Midas again. I expect also to see tighter group with better condition and tighter SD. We are kind of please( excited I should say) to get this warmer weather to shoot :) but still cold in fact.

Congratulations Sigp226. Great shooting, especially for -2*C and some wind. Did you do anything to keep the ammo warm, or was it just sitting at ambient temperature? I ask only because I suspect the groups will tighten up even more when the lube and powder in the ammo are 10*C to 15*C warmer.

I've started trying this challenge last week after my 223 shots were stringing vertical,I was thinking trigger so I've been really practicing with the 22lr after stumbling across this(should be a sticky)glad I found it I've been out 5 times trying it,first day the wind off lake wpg was 20mph the third day was nice while driving and setting up a shooting table, then walked off the paces set up the target and then boom my table is blown 15 feet and it only got worse from there. Then the next day had a 13mph day and was able to do 3 out of 7 in a half inch one even .25.and to day in 17mph winds i was able to do 3 out of 8.i have savage mark11 with the boyd keyhole stock equiped with a caldwell bipod and a rear bag of some kind.i know the gun can do it but the winds on the prairies are maddening.my biggest learning curve has been in patience and remaining focused.but even with a small wind im not sure I could do it,it takes a hell of alot of focus.im using sk standard and eley club bulk packs from tesro or gotenda cant remember.the club is doing better then sk so thats what I will stick with.any tips.

Hi fellow Manitoban. The wind sucks. That's my biggest enemy. I try to find a well wooded area for complete calm. Near large lakes is typically a bad spot to set up. I completed the challenge last year but I have 3 or 4 other guns I'd like to attempt it with this year. I also prefer trying to use "cheap" ammo. It's definitely not easy

Ya thawing is brutal trumps hair would be a mess even with the cement glue he uses.did unfind it hard getting calm days for the challenge

I caved in and bought another Match 22 LR rifle. The moderator of this thread, Underthegun, put it up for sale.
Initial results indicate it was not a mistake. The rifle was originally built for 250-25x on here, and he had a very
good build done. Sleeved M37 Remington action, Custom Laminated stock, pillar-bedded to the action. 27" Kreiger
1-16 twist SS barrel, Eley Match chamber, Karl Kenyon trigger. Scope is a 24X Weaver with a 1/8 moa dot.

I had it to the range for the first time yesterday. Seasoned the barrel with a few Eley Match EPS rounds, and for
a lark, put up a target and shot 5 - 5 shot groups to see if it would qualify for this thread. If I had not been caught
by a gust of wind, it would have made the ¼ inch club on the first try!! Only one group out of the .1's, and it is .304"
Group sizes:
.196"
.146"
.135"
.169"
.304"
Average: .190"

That is great looking, Just think what will happen when you get use to it and practice.LOL;)
Quite a few years ago I meant a older fellow , looking at a 1920's Cat, He had a ss annie, 190 CIL and a set up in a 100 ft shop.
He was shooting it stock, peep sights, off hand and had just done what he had been working on for a while . 5 shots in one hole.
He was in his mid/high 80's at the time.
