My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

The monthly 100 yard benchrest challenge on RFC CZ forum has my current interest, and yes, prizes are awarded there. Welcome to non-CZ rifles in the Honorary class as well, I'd also encourage everyone to check it out and give it a try!

http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=982297

I shot that a while ago, could only get 3/5 in the circle and didn't think that would be good enough so didn't measure them but after seeing a few posts I guess it might not be to bad.

I've got a couple left to get in the 100yd one here, just haven't had a lot of time to shoot that one lately.

This group target was shot at our 100 Meter Rimfire shoot during the warmer months and shot over wind flags. The bottom right target measured 0.602. It is not mine!
My targets (the 8" Bulls eye) are shot with a BSA Martini Int'l Mk II in an attempt to encourage those with target rifles . . . without much success.

Hey horseman2 was that my target from July?

I had the chance to really try out my Anschutz 1408 standard rifle for the first time today. I tried yesterday but was interrupted by guys who came to the range to shoot to make noise. The history of the model is a bit confusing as the rifle is very similar to the 1407, but the 1408 is made before 1970 and has checkering rather than stippling. It is not to be confused with the 1408 ED Super, which is a Running Target model.

My best target for overall average group size:

Second best for overall average group size:

Third best for overall average group size:

I shot these at 57 yards. I used SK Standard Plus. Perhaps if I had used ammo "better" -- Center X or Midas Plus -- I might have tightened up the groups a bit, but I figure that if a rifle can meet this challenge with ammo like SK + then it's a decent target shooter.

The rifle is capable of shooting tight groups with SK + as this target shows, but it's not easy to string together three or four of these, let alone five in a row. Better ammo would probably help tighten groups and so would shooting at only 50 yards.

The rifle (with a 3" wide BR plate I made and fastened to the accessory rail).

The scope is another Sightron SII 36X.

First target groups shot left to right: .339, .410, .468, .278, .424 with average group size 0.384"
Second target groups: .312, .495, .398, .452, .315 with average group size 0.394"
Third target groups: .375, .441, .316, .403, .460 with average group size 0.399"

Very consistant shooting Glenn and great results with SK STD plus @57 yds no less.Great rifle and good shooter behind it.Nice job on the stock refinishing and overall refurbish. As they say another one saved!!
Any issues with the sticky bolt today?I'm hoping to get my latest out as well.

Looks like a "1/2" all day" shooter, Glenn, good shooting. No guarantees "better" ammo will tighten up the groups, my Standard Plus is tending to outperform the "better" and slightly more expensive Rifle Match. I've run the SK and Lapua line over a chronograph, charted and graphed it, and found very little difference in ES and SD values for all the ammo. Average velocity between the lots does stand out as being significantly different. To put it in "Looky" speak, "It's awwwlll ahhbawt teh hermawwniks". Std + looks like a good candidate to keep working with in that rifle, experimenting with a pressure shim in the barrel channel could be all that's needed to dial it in. Depends where it's sitting on the accuracy node as is, could just as easily push it further over and make it worse, but the only way to know for sure is to try it. Food for thought if you're ever going to come back to that rifle. What's next?

That's a nice consistent shooter. I added you to the successful list.

I recently got this rifle that was manufactured in Jyvaskyla, about 100 kilometers or so from where my father was born. He's often spoken of these rifles and their good accuracy. It's a Valmet M65.

I shot a total of 14 rounds to zero the scope, some of them at 25 yards, before shooting this target. It was 9 degrees and raining all morning, and although I was in a building it was enough to soak me when I went to put out the targets and retrieve them. I was pleased and so I didn't mind being cold and wet.

Here's another target.

I shot a number of targets that had sub-.250 groups, but none were without some flawed groups.

Here's the rifle.

The distance was 57 yards. The ammo was SK Standard Plus. The scope is a Sightron SII 36X.

The groups were shot left to right.
1st target: .312, .372, .397, .458, .396 Average group size 0.387"
2nd target: .374, .354, .481, .263, .268 Average group size 0.348

This challenge seems pretty easy and straightforward , but , on a one target attempt , I found it to be exactly what it is , challenging . It would be interesting to know how many shooters / rifles actually did it on the first attempt . No BS . My MPR has shot groups in the 0.0's , but one fantastic target is not really representative of average accuracy to me .

If we're counting, here's one that did it on the very first full target shot. No BS. This rifle has given me the best results I've ever had first time out.

Very neat rifle Glenn, glad you were able to "Finnish" your targets ;)

I'm not sure how to qualify a "first attempt", as HondaVTEC pondered the success rate. I design my targets for my testing process such that if a good result is generated, it is suitable for posting in this thread. There are usually numerous failed "attempts" before I find what works, but once I know how to make the rifle shoot I can go back to the range another day and nail this challenge on the first try most of the time. Essentially, I'm usually shooting my targets with this challenge in mind, but it is rare that the very first parameter being tested can succeed in this challenge.

My turn today as Glenn is getting way ahead of me.
This is my latest refurbished 1970 Anshutz Match 54.
It wearing a 6-24x50 Vortex HST ammo was center X at a distance of 51 yds in very windy to breezy conditions.
This was my 6th target of the day and was " challenge" as I had trouble with the wind and then a sticky bolt on the last 2 targets.
I did get one into the teens on my 5th target a .187 so I know this rifle is a shooter.

Groups are
.311/.232/.394/.344/.261

Average group size .308

I added the first Valmet to the successful list. Nice shooting.

Great results, Savagecanuck! That beauty must be scary accurate when the wind is calm.

Thanks I hope to find out some day soon .I saved my best lot of Center X as I'm down to a half brick of it.It only comes out on special days now. I also treated myself to a new scope from Prophet River today it should arrive next week. I also have 2 more match 54's I'm currently working on. The 1408 I'm refurbishing was pretty beat but it's coming along nicely. It's next up for the challenge when I get it done.Still refinishing the stock and waiting on a front action screw that Glenn is so graciously sending me.

Been awhile since I've had something to add to this thread, my goals for this year did not go smoothly... but I am back on track. Shot a few targets with the 597 yesterday, didn't experiment much (at all) with the Limbsaver X-Ring, just put it on at home and went shooting. Also shimmed the barrel near the receiver with a piece of leather. Ended up with a target I'm pretty happy with shooting SK Rifle Match. First 597 for this thread! :50cal:

Remington 597 - Lilja barrel
Sightron SII 6-24x
Caldwell Rock w/ medium front bag, and rear bag.
Groups: 0.351", 0.282", 0.382", 0.321", 0.392"
Average = 0.346"

Ammo selection can make ya, or break ya. Squeaked out another two successful runs with some RWS, was a little dicey with the R-100.
