My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

Nice shooting. I'm sure that .451" made you a little nervous until you were able to put the calipers on it. I added you to the successful list.
 
This is easier said than done! Have spent a good part of the summer on and off trying to meet this challenge and it has taught me a lot. EVERYTHING matters! Each little detail. Finally I managed to get all the planets into alignment this past weekend......Then I ran out of ammo after 15 shots. The top 3 bulls were shot with RWS Club and the last 2 with SK Standard Plus. On switching ammo I fired a couple of throw away shots off target to get the barrel to settle down.

I shot my Anschutz 1407 for the first time this morning and it did not disappoint me.







The rifle



First target, groups shot left to right: .434, .367, .199, .423, .340"
Average group size: .353"

Second target, groups shot left to right: .334, .309, .353, .416, .458"
Average group size: .374"

The scope was a brand new Sightron SII 36X.
The ammo was SK Standard Plus.
 
What a flurry of activity! Good work to all the successful contestants, sometimes it takes quite a bit of work to get a successful attempt with a certain rifle (I know this more than most anyone). To those who achieved success relatively easily/quickly, perhaps you might consider challenging yourselve's a little more and waiting to get a target without any groups in the 0.4's before posting ;)

I appreciate the encouragement (since it would seem to be directed mostly at me). Some of my rifles are indeed capable of consistent .2's and .3's -- even those that are older with untold rounds through their original barrels. Others, like the new CZ 452 American (whose results I recently posted), with it's lightweight sporter profile, you take what you can get, and if that includes .4's so be it as it is probably outshooting factory expectations.

Many of my rifles haven't been shot (or shot very much) once results have been posted. There are a few that I shoot more often. When I have more time I'll try to shoot nothing but sub-.400's.
 
so i was finally able to get a nice day to myself and get some nice ammo to try out and i thought id try to do this and get my name up onto the board.

i took 5 rifles out that i wanted to try with this higher end ammo.
1 gun broke so that knocked that one out. (was a tricked out Ruger American Rimfire)
2nd gun Took out my custom made Dlask 10/22 and got ever...... ever so close with that gun to making it!
ended up having 2 flyer on my best piece of paper that put me to 0.67 the group of 5 average was 0.476 so if that one bloody flyer didnt happen!
im sure everyone who has tried this has had that one bloody flyer!
3rd gun was my CZ 452 Varmint that i picked up last year, was super impressed with it, i honestly thought it had made it until just a minute ago when i was measuring it here in my den. had one group that was 0.61 to push it out of contention. all 5 groups average was 0.538
4th gun was my Savage BTVLSS and it did NOT like the ammo i brought so i packed it up after the initial test targets and didnt even bother wasting my time or ammo on attempting the competition.
5th and last gun i brought for fun, its my dads old Cooey Model 82 Army Trainer which is running a early 1980's Simmons 3x9 scope.
gun averaged 0.526 for all 5 targets with 2 targets having nasty flyers but it had my best target of the day, a 0.18!!!!!!
i facetimed my dad to let him know, he was very excited about that!

so all in all even though none of the 5 guns i took out to the range made it i think i can get 2 of them into shape.
i now have a couple bricks of good ammo that they seem to like and now ive tried and know what its like ill just need to do some practice practice practice!!!

oh, ammo i picked up was SK Plus and SK Rifle Match.
the Dlask shot the Plus better than the Match and all the others shot the Match better.
the Savage im going to have to find something else for it..... suggestions? im thinking of maybe gettins some elly or some RWS???

all in all was a great way to kill a morning/afternoon!

keep your eye's on me, ill get these buggers onto the list!

Not specifically intended for you, though I do include you among those who have both the skills and rifles capable of shooting all groups sub 0.400". You've already posted some results that are all sub 0.400" (post #724, Anschütz 1913A BR50), and I think you could even make the 1/4" club if you focused on that rifle. Perhaps your current goal is to just work through your current collection to achieve 1/2" challenge successes, and I understand it could take a really long time if you started trying to dial in each rifle to it's best performance before shooting the next. I also know some rifles just won't be capable of a higher standard, such as my MSR. I resigned my challenge post with it to having a single group in the 0.4's since I could not eliminate the 0.4's no matter the ammo tested and tried over several months, and I shot many successful attempts with it in the process while holding out for the "ideal" target that I wanted to post for it. If one does not pursue a higher standard, they'll never know for sure if either their rifle or themselves are capable of the achievement.

I've also seen HondaVTEC post very nice targets elsewhere, so it raised an eyebrow to see he decided to post his target with an "oopsie" on it here. Canadiankeeper also posted the very first successful target he shot with his new MPR Tactical Trainer, but I completely understand the excitement/enthusiasm there and have done the exact same thing myself after finally getting my XXII to shoot, only to subsequently improve my results to all sub 0.400" with it :rolleyes: You only get that first "official" post per rifle, why not strive to showcase it's best performance?
 
I hope it wasn't me either my last 2 challenges had one .414 all the rest were teens 2s and 3s.A .265 average and .309 average.
Like Glenn said some rifles are not capable of doing better than spitting out a few .4s.
In Glenn,s defense he always shoots at 57 yds handicapping himself and usually using sk std plus. I'm usually at 52 yds using center x so I expect better of myself. My personal best was an all 2s with my 1813 supermatch.
Any way it's never easy, lots of variables. Sometimes I don't have time to strive for better as life and more rimfires catch my Eye!!

Keep at it wayup, be interesting to see if that Cooey will do it. I have a tube fed one here that all touch with shorts at 25, wondering if it might. Not quite sure on mounting a scope though, don't want to drill.

You 3-4 other recent posters could start a .4@50 thread or maybe 1/2"@75? Or maybe a Annie only thread where the smallest target wins a Tim card maybe? I dunno :yingyang:

I decided to post my attempt with an oopsie last group for a few reasons . I wanted my attempt to be representative of real world performance , both of the rifle , ammo and just as importantly , of my abilities on that specific day . I tried the target challenge one time , and it is what it is . I did not want to shoot multiple targets and cherry pick the best to post . There is nothing wrong with that , but what I shot was one attempt . Can my MPR do better ? In my opinion , yes , and I may reshoot it with better ammo for the heck of it just to see for my own personal enjoyment . This challenge seems pretty easy and straightforward , but , on a one target attempt , I found it to be exactly what it is , challenging . It would be interesting to know how many shooters / rifles actually did it on the first attempt . No BS . My MPR has shot groups in the 0.0's , but one fantastic target is not really representative of average accuracy to me . I feel strongly that I am the weakest link in this chain . In other hands , my rifle might do measurably better . So , even though my attempt is far from the "best", I am happy with it under the one attempt conditions that I had set for myself . In the end , its all for fun and it was exactly that for me :)
 
Nicely put, HondaVTEC.

Rifle accuracy is not always equal to a shooter's accuracy, which can change from day to day. People are not machines capable of consistent shooting time after time as that requires consistent behaviour behind the rifle time after time (among other things). Even the best athletes do not perform their best each and every time.
 
Very well put. Im very picky on the days I go to shoot the "challenge" Im at about a 75% on first attempt. (after 10 rounds to sight in and settle down)

I go to the range, set up.
Lay ten into a sight in target.
Move over to the 5 circle target I use and 3 outa 4 times I will hit it first try.

As I said before Im very picky on the days I will try it, low win or wind coming up from behind is what is ideal. My range also has large walls on each side so not much cross breeze.

Sometimes im lucky enough for the more experienced gentlemen to have their wind flags out every 25 yards :)
 
I feel like people are taking me the wrong way here, at the heart of what I'm saying is that I see good potential in a number of shooters, and I'm just giving a friendly nudge to encourage some to raise the bar for themselves. The reaction I was looking to generate is as quoted below:

That's all, just to have a shooter sit back, look at their targets and say to themselves "Yeah, you know what? I think I could do better and am up for another challenge. If I can do it, great! If not, at least I'll have fun trying!"

It is apparent everyone has their own motivations and goals, so the only thought I can leave with anyone is once you've checked the 1/2" challenge off your list, what's next? Whatever it is for you, have fun doing it.

The monthly 100 yard benchrest challenge on RFC CZ forum has my current interest, and yes, prizes are awarded there. Welcome to non-CZ rifles in the Honorary class as well, I'd also encourage everyone to check it out and give it a try!
