My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

After a number of abandoned attempts, everything came together this morning. Last night I missed on one target by 2/100's of an inch.
9 degrees, calm and clear.
Anschutz 1710
Sightron III 36X
Remington Eley Match velocity 1067
0.313, 0.243, 0.313, 0.449 and 0.391. Average: 0.3419

Not wanting to take any chances, the target was backed using a lot number with a velocity of 1062. Average: .3504

Great shooting Horseman2. Beautiful gun. I’m contemplating getting one myself. I added you to the successful list.

50m Sub-Half Inch Groups Using Aperture Sights!

I am new to aperture sights and having fun practicing on the bench. Currently I am shooting benchrest style with front rest and rear bag. I was amazed that sub-half inch groups are possible with aperture sights!

Below are five photos showing center-to-center sub-half inch 5-shot groups using 50m targets made to exact scale from two disciplines: ISSF 50m Match Rifle and SFC 50m Sporting Rifle (but shot from the bench). Front aperture size used was 4.0mm. Rear aperture was 1.1mm. Ammo was SK Biathlon Sport.

These will not qualify for this challenge because I cherry-picked the best targets from several targets that had larger groups, and these were shot on two different days. Wind was an issue and blew open my groups on several targets. These targets are printed on 8.5 x 11 paper, so they are not on the single piece of paper as required by the Challenge rules.

I am posting these to show that it can be done with aperture sights, and I intend to give it a try soon using the Challenge rules. I have on order from SFC the official targets for 50m ISSF and Sporting Rifle, each which have 6 bulls (2 sighters, 4 for record), paper size 16.5" x 26", so I can meet the single paper target rule. Unfortunately the target backers on my local 50m range are framed in too small (22" x 22") to fit the entire target sheet's vertical dimension, and I will have to cut the sheet showing only 4 bulls. But I can paste a black aiming bull in the middle of the 4 and will have enough white space around it for the aperture ring. I already tested the dimensions on my Range's backers, and this fix will work.

When I get the single sheet targets I will give it an official rules-compliant try.

The measurements on the photos below were made with the official method to the outside of the black carbon ring and then subtracting 0.022". On screen here so that you can see the carbon ring easier, in post-processing I over-exposed the black and reduced the contrast, which makes the black carbon ring around the holes more visible.

Target 1 = 0.207"

Target 2 = 0.263"

Target 3 = 0.292"

Target 4 = 0.390"
50m_aperture_4.jpg

Target 5 = 0.397"

Rifle set-up: (ignore the masking tape on the rear sight and extender rail. These are temporary to prevent scratching my eye glasses. These will be coated with a non-scratch film).

Skwerl,
Try different ammo brands ( Lapua centerX, and Midas + and also Eley match and tenex and maybe some RWS R50 ). Also a good idea to try different lots of each brand. It is time and money consuming but it is the only way to find the ammo that your rifle likes...

My 1710 will do this all day .

Any Suggestions ? Different ammo ? Yep .!.

As Gillis2 notes, try other, better ammo.

I think I had that rifle a few years back. When I posted its results on this thread, this is what it can do with better ammo.

I had an Anschutz 1710 D HB and came to regret selling it. I liked it for its sporter stock and heavy barrel. When the chance came to get another I took it. I paid for it last Thursday and received it the next day. I swapped trigger springs to give it a 15 ounce trigger pull and took it out for the first time this morning. Once I got the scope zeroed I shot a couple of groups and I knew I had a rifle that was not too bad a shooter.

First target, left to right: .292, .245, .367, .287, .171" Average: .272"
Second target, left to right: .187, .289, .357, .343, .362" Average: .308"
Third target, left to right: .392, .341, .371, .265, .354" Average: .345"

The distance was 57 yards. The ammo was Center X (targets 1 and 3) and SK Rifle Match (target 2). The scope is a Sightron SII36.

Unfortunately the target pictures are gone. Post #1365 https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...ards-meters-all-day!-Really-Prove-it!/page137

Ammo

I have tried some Eley Match with the same result
as SK Std + , she shoots every thing consistently well

No one in this area handles Lapua the 2 dealers
with Eley (CDN Tyre) & LGS only have 1 or 2 lots
at one time tho I will do the Tenex . (next season)

Hey Mel , you have any good stuff I could try ?

My 1710 HB is in a GRS stock with a 5119 trigger
which I have at 250 gr. (8oz ?) she shoots like beauty.

Glenn , Gilbert ,thnkz for the advice ... skwerl

I haven't done any shooting for some time so I was able to get out this morning to lay down some groups in the wind, snow and cold.
Tikka T1X with bipod and Protektor rear bag
Athlon Cronus
SK Biathlon - no Lot testing, whatsoever. Shot this ammo for the first time yesterday, then adjusted the rifle harmonics to suit the ammo
.353, .324, .498, .423, .351 Avg= .390 Just squeaked in on the one group. That flyer is on me - not the ammo.

Looks like you're not measuring the 'smudge ring' from the bullet.. May just be the angle of your caliper, and would still fall under the 0.5", I think.

ok cool...
None the less I figured I'd share anyways..
I was quite the achievement I managed to get this far....
Then ran out of ammo...... of course...

Was a lovely day today to sight in the new scope and test the new 1710. While I am not happy with the original stock that came with the new Anschutz (am refinishing that currently), the GRS stock is wonderful and the barreled action slipped right in. And the rifle shoots exceedingly well for only 50 rounds through it so far. The two flyers were entirely me even in the 3c temperature. Lovely gun and looking forward to some warmer weather to try it at 100 yds.
So new entry for this rifle:
Anschutz 1710 HB ES
Nightforce NX8 4-32x50 (set on 16x)
Caldwell rest and bag
Lapua Center-X
Sharon Range #2 50 yrds
Jan 2, 2023 3c

Average = 0.29"
#1 0.452"
#2 0.134"
#3 0.238"
#4 0.283"
#5 0.341"
