My Drilling journey

This is such a cool thread, thank you for posting.

Would you be able to show the rifle iron sights hidden and deployed? I didn't know that was a feature, but sounds really cool!

Thanks for the kind words fellas. It is nice to get a slap on the back from your peers.

I am kinda getting the feeling there aren’t too many drilling or combo guys out there. Seems odd to me given there are several overlapping seasons in Canada. For example, how many people carry a .22 or shotgun with bird shot while moose hunting? How often have I flushed grouse in the same spot while walking to a deer stand? How many annoying squirrels have shown up while watching for deer? I have had a coyote stand and watch me at 150 yards while hunting Turkey....just saying.

You make a good point about squirrels and other varmints around tree stands. I doubt a drilling is in my future but reacquiring an FN SA-22 with a moderator and a small fixed scope or a red dot might be just the ticket...

Sure thing...The resting state of the front blade sight looks like this:

So, when you are in shotgun mode, it lays flat and even with the rib.
You push the rifle selector forward like you would to take off a tang safety. The button on the selector pops up and locks it forward. This makes the front trigger (which is also a set trigger) the rifle trigger.

The front leaf, which says "100" on it, pops up. Coincidentally, the scope mounts on my gun are "see through" but the hole is a lot smaller than the ones we typically see over here.

I have yet to try this sight to see if its on or not.

Dilly, you did very well friend. I have a Suhl drilling from about 1890 in 10x10x45-70. It's nice but a bit of a beast at 10 3/4 pounds. For the record the manual pop up rifle tang sight seems to be zeroed for about 75 yards or thereabouts.
Cheers

That is so cool! Thank you for teaching me.

The other recent thread about drillings prompted me to update this one. I have been working on some loads for the 7x65R and cant quite get it to where it is driving tacks. I found the factory S+B 173 grain SPCE bullets grouped decently so, I chose the Hornady 175 grain ELD-X as my substitute. The 26" barrel twists 1 in 8 3/4" so I "think" it should stabilize this bullet. I have no MV reading unfortunately because the cold killed the battery in the chrony. The below three shot groups are 100 yards from a lead sled. The scope is only a 6 power and the post is huge as it is a front focal plane scope, so its a bit hard to really fine it down...I am interested in your thoughts...

All these were shot with a cold clean barrel

this is a three shot group with the factory loads.

Probably plenty capable for deer/elk/moose...

I'm reviving this thread just to update everyone. I was out west trying to punch an Idaho elk tag with my drilling. Didn't connect on elk, but got a small mulie and a blue (dusky) grouse with the .22 insert. I added a cottontail to the list too back home.
