My rifle shoots 1/2" groups @100 yards all day! Really? Prove it.

Never posted pic's before -- sure hope this works !!!

Small Group -- .187

Hope I haven't forgotten anything ???

That group is at least 2 (.243) bullets wide going on 2.5. How can that be .187??? .187 is an oblong hole.

Well NormB............it is .187 center of bullet hole to center of bullet hole, you find this by measuring outside to outside of the group and subtract 1 bullet diameter, so........0.430-.243 would equal o.187............obviously you subtract the caliber of bullet that you shot the group with....

How is group 5 .498"? It is 3 .243 holes wide with room for a 4th between them. That would make a group over .7" no? Not trying to be difficult but thats what it looks like...maybe it's just the pic. Great looking rifle you have there and If I'm wrong on group five, great shooting and congrats.

0.741 outside edge to outside edge of the bullet holes minus .243(bullet diameter) equals a .498 center to center group............and that is how you officially measure group size..........

Obivously Yodave the group is measured wrong. By sight you can see it is more and 2 bullet diameters wide, so the group has to be at least .243 wide center to center,and lilkey more. A group .187 wide is just 1 oblong hole with no countable bullet holes like the one posted.

comparing the .708 to the .741 its hard to tell on a computer screen....the white circle of the target is 1 inch, so using that to gauge the outside to outside I would say its in and correct........

Hey Rob...the jurry wants a picture of your calipers laying on the .741 group.........

You guys are awesome. I am very impressed with the shooters trying this in tough weather conditions. Lots of nice shooting including the ones that almost made it. Great thread.

Rob, you have to be more careful measuring from outside to outside of your bullet holes. That group you measured as .46 outside to outside, I can clearly see the one lobe of your caliper (in the center) is missing about 1/3 of the bullet hole.
The one CdnShooter mentioned is way more than .498 as well.

They are nice groups, but bigger than avertised. Especially in this thread, if you have to err, it should be on the big side, not small.

I have been itching to get out and try this, and I was finally able to this past weekend. It was cold (-10'C or something like that) with gusts of wind. It's amazing how quickly you can get cold when you're not moving around. Long story short, I failed, but I think the more people who post pics, the more shooters may get the bug and hit the range to try the challenge.

I decided to take out two rifles;

The first, a Tikka T3 action in .223 with a Shillen 1/8 twist barrel in a Manners T4 stock. I was shooting 80gr Berger VLDs with 24.4gr of Varget in Winchester brass with CCI BR4s. Unfortunately I didn't succeed but looking at the smaller groups makes me think it is 100% operating error. You really need to concentrate off the bench. I will likely try again, this time from the prone. I found that I could "settle" into a good shooting position while sitting and as a result I think I was being inconsistent with the rear bag which may have caused the vertical stringing in some of the groups. You can also see that the shooting benches at our range are a little too short so I did a less than ideal jimmy rig with a piece of plywood. That probably didn't help either.

The second, is a Remington SPS Tactical in .223 in a Boyds Varmint thumbhole stock. I took out the Remington for fun just to see if it could pass the test and I could be one of those guys who brag that my stock SPS can shoot 1/2 MOA ... but, alas, no dice!. I was using 55gr VMAXs with 25gr of Varget in Winchester brass with CCI BR4s. I thought it was a good load but it looks like I may be back at the drawing board.

Here are some pics;

Been watching this thread with great interest and got a chance to give it a go. New FTR trainer - muzzle brake for training and testing.

Temps today was "warm" - around 3C. Winds were moderate gusty tailwind with some right to left.

Sorry, for the crappy pics but I lost my reg camera and these were taken as stills off a low res camcorder.

Savage, Rifle Basix 2, Choate Tactical stock, MPOD, SIII10-50X60 LRIRMOA, Burris XTR ring, Weaver Tactical base.

Hrn 178gr Amax, Win brass, CCI primer

Smallest group is 0.251" Group #4. Crappy math too :)

Average is 0.383"

I'll let you guys decide if this run qualifies

This was a lot of fun and sure makes you concentrate for both form and conditions. Great practise.

Jerry.........we discussed you doing this with a axis..............nice shooting and nice new rig........
I want to try it again but Tam won't give up the duece........so I got a savage axis that I am working on, first to finish the rifle, then to find a load.....

I will likely use the axis for the hunting forum version of this test.

If that goes well, then I will see about swapping out barrels and give this a go but things are warming up and F TR practise awaits.
