My Swiss Arms Story: UPDATE Post#162, My Theory on the Extraction Issues

Fascinating thread, just read all 12 pages.

Very impressed with all the help you've received. My sympathies that it wasn't a simple part failure.

Best of luck with the Swiss.

If I had a company that dealt with something like this I'd just replace the upper receiver and be done with it. Not every little mystery needs to be solved.

I'm sure they've seen this before in Switzerland - the gun, in some way, is worn out after the 5000+ rounds.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, I've always been interested in these rifles, and seeing how the retailer/company have treated your case is very re-assuring.

All the best.

I'd probably bump up that number by a factor of 6 or 7 before saying a SAN is worned out and even then it'll keep on doing.

That's good news Steve. Glad to see that you'll finally be able to close the loop on this!

Ecstatic would be an under statement, for a while there I was worried I might be stuck with a three thousand dollar paper weight!

I can't wait to get it back and run a few hundred rounds through it to test her out. My goal I think will be to run at least 1000 rounds through it in the first couple months I have it back just to be sure it function's right, that shouldn't be to hard, I shoot a lot in the winter (1019 rounds through the Classic Green between Oct,29-Nov,18/2012) so to get that many rounds through the Black Special shouldn't be to hard.

I would have been $hittin' bricks myself about the whole situation :)

Do you still have the lower at TSE or did they send the whole rifle over? I only ask because if they have the lower and if there's a way to know from SAN whether or not you'll be getting a complete new upper or using some of your "old" parts, perhaps they could offer to take an upper from another rifle and they can take possession of the new one whenever it comes in.

Now if you'll be using your own parts to complete it, then that idea wouldn't work all that well for you!

The only thing that got sent to SAN was the upper receiver.

I also checked with the edge and I will be getting all of my original parts reinstalled, not the new stuff that was used to test the rifle before it got sent out. It would have been nice, but I am still just happy to be getting it back in working order

Sorry, to hear of your probelms with your very expensive rifle. You're obviously relieved everything has now (hopefully) been repaired properly. I can't help by feel unimpressed by the events that took place, however. I realize TSE did everything in their power to service you but I don't understand why the manufacturer wouldn't have just replaced the entire upper with a brand new unit instead of dragging you through all of this.

It's as though Swiss Arms was in denial over a defect in their product? I dunno - I just got left with that opinion. It's as though no one has ever fired 5,000 rounds in their rifles before? It sucks being a Beta tester, huh? lol. No doubt it would have been cheaper for the company to just replace it as to spend an inordinate amount of time and labour expense of attempting to repair the upper in Canada only to then ship it to Switzerland for repair and then return it to you.

Not slamming anyone here. Just thinking your interests could have been better served in a more efficient manner.

Everyone is entitled to there opinion I suppose, but I am satisfied simply getting my rifle back in good working order!

When will you get the upper back so you can test it out?

I have been informed that the upper is being shipped out from SAN sometime next week, once it arrives at the edge in Calgary (couple weeks I would think) the smith there will re-assemble it, test fire it, and send it back to me.

How long will that take? I have no idea, my hope is that I get it back before christmas, if not then shortly after. After so long, what is an extra month after all. Besides, I was lucky enough to get a Classic Green right before I sent this one away so I will be happy to wait, just as long as it works right when I get it back ;)

Good to hear that you'll now have the twins together again.
I am really pleasantly surprised by the level of support.

Still a bit curious though, but good for you to have your baby back in your hands.

Yeah me!!! I called it, just made sense, fantastic news, great PR, good for you, all the best!

Isn't there a spring to return the bolt foward it doesn't seem to be an ejection problem as the round seems to get hung up inside it could be that?

somewhere back there towards the beginning of the thread, it indicates that every single part on the firearm besides the receiver's was replaced with new and the rifle still malfunctioned, this was the determining factor in it being caused by the upper receiver, hence why we sent only the upper to SAN, and hence why the only "new" piece I will get will be a new upper

The rifle has been re-assembled and test fired. Everything is apparently working properly, and the rifle will ship out next week sometime

thanks to everyone for there input, sorry to say SAN did not inform or maybe just couldn't figure out what was wrong with the upper. I have a theory, but I will keep it private until I make my own evaluation based on my own test fire.

Dec 12th - Almost 6 months after I sent it away, I got the Black Special back today:D:D:D

Since I heard I was getting a new upper, I had always thought they had just taken one off the line and sent it out, but it turns out SAN actually manufactured a new upper receiver for me, the one I just got has the same serial number as the old one did.

:confused:My only guess is the serial number on the lower must match the upper, so they had to make a new one:confused:

Test fire update to come!
