All I gotta say, is keep on keep'en up! I just spent 3 years up there, and you think the grass is greener... it isn't. In fact, there isn't any.... I just moved back to Carrot River, and you can't get better hunting. Hit me up for stories sometime.....

But too bad about missing the bear though, oh well, next year. :cool:
 
Finally heard back from my buddy and he shot that nanuq with a 223 and it was approx 9 foot. LUCKY BUGGER!!! Next Year I hope I hope I hope ... HAHA! ;)

good to hear that the bears up there are not bullet proof, down here they need at least a 338mag , congradulations on your friends bear,the hard hunts are usually the most that stick in memories.kudos for you to go out in -50, would love to come along just for the ride and memories. your one class act and i always look forward to your adventures

Well it seems all my friends are now catching nanuqs ... damn lucky SOB's ... HAHA ... my buddy's wife Sharon caught her first nanuq the other day ... here she is with it and she also used a 223. ;) She caught this beauty south of Whale Cove.

I remember reading a hunt report by your buddy Catwork a few years ago. IIRC, he was bouncing over the ice and a nanuq was in the water below him!

What other animals besides nanuq have you hunted? You mentioned watching ivik(walrus), can you hunt them? How about Musk ox, or Narwhals?
 
223 is popular up here due to the inexpensive cost of bullets. The ladies here can shoot I tell you boys! :D ... Sharon shot it in the neck 1 shot and killed that bear ... it was just over 7 foot she said this morning when I spoke with her ... AWESOME LUCKY BUGGER! :D

Tootall, yes Catworks and his cousin were hunting a bear at the flow-edge on icepans and harpooned it when it came up for air and then shot it ... and pulled it up with a rope and boat ... craziness! :D

I've hunted tuktu(caribou), Umingmak(muskox), amarok(wolves), geese, beluga whale, wolverine, seals ... you name it ... I haven't tried for narwhal yet ... ;)

I have a cousin who worked as a radio operator at the airfield in Baker Lake many years ago, and knew most of the people there. Apparently the 22 Hornet was one of the weapons of choice back then, along with the 30-30 and 303 Br, and no small number of big game, including Nanuq, were taken with the Hornet.

Do you know if it is still used at all?

I'll be honest and say I'm not sure ... We've always said Baker Lake was different as they live inland and don tknow what salt air is ... as we coasters all use 223 or bigger ... :p It all depends on what people can afford to be honest ... it's beyond expensive to live up here and bullets are not cheap. I've seen everything from 22lr, 22hornet, 222, 223, 243 and up used on ALL animals up here.
