NEA/BLC 102 Reliability

My XCR-M mags are hard to seat on a closed bolt. With an open bolt they just click in.

I could not use the bolt release with the XCR-M mags, just as you describe because the bolt release was hitting the left side of the mag spine. I contacted SFRC and...

THE FIX is: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1603098-BCL102-and-XCR-M-Micro-Pistol-Mags

I did that mod, as seen in here, to get them in spec. Bolt release now works (releases bolt, anyways). But doesn't seem to pick the first round. You can see on the underside of the upper, where there is contact.

Even on an open bolt. all of my mags need a good firm bump, to get the mag catch to grab.

Ah, so you did fix the mag's spine. But it still won't pick up the first round? Can you post pics? Is the first round's nose down?

Cheers

I gotta get some time so I can figure out how to post pics, as I know that would be very helpful, and save 1000 words.

Need to go read the picture posting info, and I think member up so I can get some pics, here.

After loading my mags, I normally bump the spine a few times, to seat the rounds to the back, then insert the mag. I'll pay a little closer attention, and take some pics, then figure out how to post. Info may be good for all here.

Had a bunch of FTEs when i first got mine that was talked about much earlier in this thread. Contacted Ryan at SFRC and they UPSed me a new BCG overnight. Fixed all my problems. Comparig both bolts, looks like the extractor spring was alot weaker on the original BCG. Now it runs like a top and im starting to build a load recipe for it. Thanks Ryan!

I'm running 168gn tsx bullets behind 42.4 gn of h4895 Winchester cases with wlr primers. Small base die and factory crimp. Also hornady 150gn fmj behind 42gn of h4895.
Both give good results but my gun definitely likes the heavy bullets and lots of powder. I backed my load off and lost some accuracy. The best I got was from the tsx with 43gn of h4895 but there where signs of pressure I was in happy with.

Today I finally got out with the BCL 102. At first I was all excited... but then the lingering thought rested in the back of my head of all the reviews and things I have read about the 102. Unfortunately, this would come true and leave me with a disappointment on my first interaction with NEA/BCL.

I have had several "gas guns" and shot many more. Never have I experienced so many "stoppages" whether it be FTF, FTE or the other FTE. Most of which I am attributing to insufficient gas. One thing in particular I have noticed is the cycling of the BCG upon its return and before it fully locks up. Comparing it to my AR-10. The AR-10 is swift and almost unnoticeable, with the BCL 102 you can distinctly feel the bolt cycle forward and then lock up. This is completely new to me. It feels really weird.

The other thing I must try and wrap my head around and I will give it another go later is how finicky it is. Again, with all the other "gas guns" I can simply grab what ever ammo and stuff it in a mag, and fire away. No Drama. The 102 on the other hand is a completely different case. After reading the other treads here on CGN I was preparing myself for a "break-in period" (which I personally think is a crock of ####) but WTF, I will go with it. I started off with some surplus Norinco 7.62, Holy ####! talk about your stoppages. As mentioned earlier, FTF, FTE, FTE. I thought I was shooting a bolt action, or a FAL with the gas plug reversed. But on a positive note, the Norinco did group better than the Hirtenberger 7.62x51 Nato. The Hirtenberger 7.62x51 Nato did function flawlessly. No issues what so ever, but did not group worth a crap at any distance.

So I will post my first range experience and groupings. Please note that I had a wack of stoppages and the optics were just a loaner from my AR-10. This was not sighted to the rifle. The range I was initially starting at was 50m. Usually I do pretty well at 50m, but this seems to be something up with this rifle.

The squiggly lines above the bullet holes was my POA. This was the Norinco ammo. Towards the end of the first part of this session, I was able to pump through 2 mags (20 rds) without any stoppages.

This is the Hirtenberger 7.62x51 Nato, if this is any indication of what the Austrians had to work with, it is a good thing they never had to go to war. LOL BTW, I have a lot of "fliers" even with my other rifles with this stuff. So I'm not really saying anything negative about the 102. Just that the gas from these rounds made the gun function properly. Perhaps this ammo might be better suited for CQB in a phone booth.

I hope my next experience with the 102 will be more positive...if not, up she goes!

Check to see if your bolt head is moving freely in the bcg. I saw a video in the Facebook group bcl owners of Canada where a guy touched one up with some 600 grit sandpaper and it fixed the failures.

I don't do FB, so I wont be able to see that video, but the bolt moves freely. Again, comparing it to my AR-10; it moves very freely almost to the point it seems like it is a really worn BCG. Later this evening I will rip it apart and do some other comparison between it and my AR-10. I will inspect the bolt and see if there is any wear marks on the lugs or anywhere else where there could be contact that is causing an issue.

However, this was with one type of ammo. The Hirtenberger fired fine, just all over the place. I am, or I have convinced myself it is an under gassing issue. I have fired lots of Norc through several other gas guns with zero issues.

Affter a few hundred rounds my gun runs even the norinco that it didn't like in the beginning. I never really believed I brake In but what can I say it runs better now than it did new.

in another thread people posting pics with cam pin wear marks in the upper that look a bit more excessive than normal , i have a hunch the head of the cam pin on these rifles could be a bit oversized and causing that bolt friction and excessive wear mark in the recess of the upper . Explains why they seem to break in after a while , the steel cam pin will work a path into the aluminum,.
