NEA Compact Carbine Stock install - Range report up.

On Friday I swapped lowers and ran it on my 14.5 5.56 upper. 200ish rounds and one FT feed (mag with bent lips) so - no issues with 5.56, for me anyway.

Not the most exciting report. Next week I'll try it on the 300BLK with both super and subsonics and see how she fares.

Mike

The fact that it worked great is exciting enough. Next Sunday will be my trial run.

How does the modified bolt and buffer effect the timing of the gun?

It doesn't. Why would you expect that it would and what difference would it make if it did?

The "timing" of an AR15 is related to when the hammer is able to be released as the bolt carrier is closing and realisticslly this only matters in FA fire. It has no practical effect for a semi auto.

The buffer has no effect on the timing.

Not much to say on it so far...it works for the 100 or so shots of used it on. Looks pretty cool on a pistol length shorty. A little more cumbersome to take down a rifle until you remember to unscrew the end cap and remove the spring, then take it down. I find the LOP adjustment less easy than a regular stock...probably due to sliding on the 2 rails...any side motion and it can 'slow' the adjustment down.

Very quick range impressions. Approx 180 rounds through.

The good: Rifle functioned well as far as cycling and firing was concerned. Very controllable, quick to point. Recoil no more than a standard AR15. I did a rapid dump of 3 lar mags and 2 pmags back to back with no functional issues aside from a bolt hold open issue.

The bad: Bolt hold open is sketchy for me. I even trimmed 3/4 of the rubber bumper off the back of the buffer, but it still just barely catches. I would say bolt catches about 25% of the time. It is a functional annoyance if you are not counting rounds down range (which I usually do). Also a bit of a #### block if you are doing fast reloads. I'm reticent to trim the buffer more because it must be impacting at the back of the buffer tube.

I was wearing a thin sweater, and later a t-shirt as the day got warm and the stock beat my shoulder up something fierce even with a very firm pull into the shoulder. Maybe a tac vest is in order, or a custom but pad. The shoulder rest is somewhat small and the pattern machined into it gives it some sharp edges.

The WTF: Twice the charging handle tapped me in the upper lip even with the stock fully extended. I do tend to hunker down on my rifles, so I may have to modify that approach. It does make me question the viability of me personally firing the gun in a less than fully extended position. This may be an issue inherent with trying to put a rifle into a subgun length.

Overall TL:DR: As a civi, it's just a "wow neat stock" piece. Looks great and functions good, but there is no real advantage of having this stock over a telescoping M4 style stock, and it actually carries some negatives (for me) over the traditional options.

Thanks for posting the video and report, interesting. Weird that the charging handle came back.

He charging handle didn't come back. The short length of pull of the stock puts the charging handle just in front of your face. Unanticipated recoil or bad head position can cause the charging handle to touch the face

You want to be VERY careful about modifying the buffer length. Shorten it too much and the rear end of the gas key could hit the top edge of the lower receiver. I know an idiot who did that without bothering to check.

Separate your receivers and run the carrier into the stock and you will see how the carrier has to fit between the receiver top and the bolt hold open device. Do this with and without the spring to ensure the carrier is not bottoming out on the spring, which is equally bad.

FWIW ammo, has port size, spring length and rate can all cause bolymholdmopen problems as they can contribute to short stroking.

Right, I guess there isn't as good of a place to put your cheek/face with this stock.

I was careful to measure the gas key clearance when I trimmed, and there is no evidence that it is hitting now. As it stands, there is maybe an eighth of an inch of bolt excursion at the rear of the bolt hold catch. Before I trimmed, the bolt overlapped the bolt catch by a good amount. The bolt catch is in spec itself. Some one on facebook messaged me about having a bolt catch issue as well. Agilent one (in this thread) does not have the bolt catch issue. It is strange, but I don't know enough people with the stock to find out how spotty this issue is.

Raising the red dot a half inch should solve the face bumping issue. They were light bumps. Enough to be aware of, but not painful.

I'm going to muck around with it a bit in the coming weeks.

Some more detail.

You can see how close the bolt face comes to the catch at full excursion.

This is the carrier trimmed. There isn't much left to trim.
