Need Help 870 issues ****Solved!****

Being a 870 pump IMO from the damage for lack of a better term the headspace is not right. That is not a over pressure IMO
Have the smith try it with a different 870 barrel first to make sure your barrel chamber was cut correctly and if the same end result try another bolt
I expect to see this in a semi not a pump

Being this a reload(Winchester doesn't use Cheddite Primers), what did the base look like before you loaded it? Is this a Remington 870 Express Magnum or Super Magnum?

It all depends on the vintage of that winchester round. Yes could be a reload but also could be factory winchester with just the older design primer

I really hope it’s not a reload! I bought the box new from bass pro and it’s a super magnum posted photos of the barrel and the bolt Bass pro

The chamber is very rough and needs to be polished eventually but that is not causing the problem
It is too hard to determine if the seat is correctly positioned from a pic
You honestly have to get another barrel and try it to nail down the source. If it does the same then we move to the next potential item

Exactly?? I would like to know also but I think it is the pic that is fixed not the shotgun at this stage

Yes sorry I fixed the pictures, I dropped it off at Al Simmons this morning they think the ammo the Winchester stuff is bad and it’s known for this expansion and bulging I left it with them he said that they will have a look and test fire it, he does not think it’s the barrel they will polish it, and fire it and make sure everything is seated.....fingers crossed hopin for the easy fix love the gun

?? But you said it was happening with challenger also did you not??
A chamber polish is a good thing for that barrel

Correct it did it with challanger, now Winchester, so I took it in, anyone ever deal Al Simmons. Seems like a pretty good shop... kinda felt dumb after I asked him if he could test fire it, he replied of course we can...... not sure how one does that inside but pretty happy to know they can

Ok so maybe I am real dumb here but how can he say bad winchester ammo is the root cause if challenger does it also plus the winchester promo ammo issues are not like this
Is he going to try another barrel with your actual winchester ammo. It would take like a minute

If he fixes firearms there has to be a 870 barrel there if not you may have to give your extra to try

I agree with 3macs it looks like ahead space issue . with the barrel removed does the shell set proud of the chamber ? when you load a new shell into the chamber does the gun lock into battery easily or do you really need to slam the action closed to get it to lock ? does the gun leave like marks if you just cycle a shell through the chamber with out firing it ? as it looks to me the bolt is forcing the shell tighter into the chamber causing the rim to roll back in the areas where there is no resistance from the bolt .

Real hard to see in the pics but take a real close look at the recess where the shell would sit in the barrel I can almost see instead of one smooth cut or taper to seat the brass properly it is stepped where the top step maybe keeping the shell proud like you say
They may get some of that the polishing pending how they do it. The only real way to be sure is simple try another barrel IMO
The bolt face looks OK from what I can see

Rembolt you are correct my friend I can see where the bolt leaves an impression on the shell Al Simmons is going to take it apart and check all of that and then fire rounds through it and see if that fixes the issue

The marks on the face of the hull are typical for what you see fired out of an 870, 3MACS probably has the right answer on the primer, didn't realize Winchester still used some of the old style primer is certain loads. For whatever reason, certain years of Supermag are bad for this, whereas my 870 Express isn't ammo fussy, one of my members' Supermag has a serious hate for Challenger ammo, Winchester Universals and certain other low brass ammo will stick in just about anything.

Now to the next question, are the hulls sticking in the barrel or failing to clear the ejection port?
