Need info on S&W 586 vs 686

So, I tried to find the differences between a model 586 and a model 686 S&W.

I will be purchasing a .357 next and need info to make an informed choice.

I lean towards a SS and it has to be restricted (no 12.6)

Why would you choose a 586 over a 686? Once I've determined that, then I can question Ruger GP100, the Taurus (I read customer service sucks?) and all the others.

Yes, to clarify...these are exactly the same gun made with the above materials being the only difference. You want the 686.

So next question, S&W 686 or Ruger GP100 or a Taurus, or a Dan Wesson, a Security Six would also be nice. Forget about Python, can't justify $1000+ for a .357

A Ruger GP-100 was my first revolver. Then I bought a S&W 66. I traded the Ruger for a S&W 28 and now all the revolvers in my safe are Smiths......

S&W 60 - 1 7/8"

I was looking at your post in the EE forum but it's still a bit more than I'm willing to pay for one.....
 
I'm also interested in the 686. But to make your choice a little bit more complicated, there is 3 different 686 models. The 686, the 686 Plus and the 686 PP. Is there anyone who can explain me the differences with advantages/disavantages?

I'm not 100% certain, maybe someone else can jump in here, but I think it means that the barrel is ported. It has holes drilled into it so that gas can escape. I guess this makes the pistol "flip" upwards less during recoil.

I am also curious of a 6in. barrel S&W 686 vs Ruger GP100, any input guys?

Depending on what your using it for be sure to check the sights out on them, you can get them with the adjustable rear sight and 4 position adjustable front sight I believe there called (Whichita sights).

That was S&W's attempt at a PPC sight, and they weren't as good as the ribbed Aristocrat or Power Custom sights.

If you had the S&W version and wanted to change to a ribbed sight, you had to change the barrel, because there wasn't any barrel meat for the front retaining screw.
