New .308 Project UPDATED - Range Report

Thanks for all the mag feed vs. single load feedback, guys. I've got a bunch of questions, but I think I should follow up on a thread of my own, since this distracts from the original poster's main topic.

Jerry, I've said this to Boomer and I'll repeat it to you: I am humbled by the depth/breadth of your firearms knowledge. I can confirm what you say about the Blaser feeding system: in-line mag and the bullet gets angled up when the bolt starts pushing it and then goes horizontal as it approaches the chamber. When I look at the roof of my chamber, I see no scratches, so I know it's working!

Update Stage 1 Complete....

So the first stage is done....
the second stage will include a mag system, 3 way butt pad, and a check rest...but for now here she is.....

Range Report

OK So it wasn't perfect shooting conditions today (wind gusts & chilly out) But all n' all I think the new 308 is a keeper... Considering the fact that I haven't bedded it....YET.... and the fact that I was a little shaky with the cold, the groupings were respectable. So once I'm done the project completely and with a little more practice, she's guna be amazing... There was only one thing that pissed me off and that was... the stock floor plate mag, trying to use that thing is like pissing into the wind.... If it didn't jam, it completely missed the casing and failed to load.... for a minute i thought i had a miss fire.... Remington floor plate Mag system = Lame... can't wait for the V-bull... Oh ya I used Federal 180gr bullets

I'd try a lighter bullet like 168gr or 175gr because of barrel length and twist. I'd also be running Varget powder (46gr) and Lapua brass with the 168gr. If you've got Win brass, with the 168gr load 46.5gr of Varget. I'm glad you're happy with the temporary performance of the gun so far. It's good to post results before you get it accurized because the result is just that much better.

Cheers

I'm curious. What are you doing with the floorplate that causes it to jam, as you said? I never touch mine during the course of a day's shooting. - dan
Well it jammed when i was loading them into the mag. After loading the first one, the second one would get caught up and not go down. If i got the second one to go down it was the third that would get stuck.... Once I got the third one to eventually go down, I loaded a separate one into the chamber. After i fired it and cashed the casing I closed the bolt, on many occasions it missed the new casing and didn't reload.

Yes, that is exactly why I started this thread, Kinda like the before and after. I wanted to see for myself just how doing all the little things improves accuracy (ie bedding, trigger, etc. etc.).....;)

you mentioned that for future upgrades u are going to buy a cheek spacer and a 3 way butt plate the cost of those two things installed by a gunsmith is around $700 give or take. u can order yourself the belland carlson MEDALIST stock with all theses options and have it sent to ur house for around $425 and it takes less than 2 weeks to get here. just lettin u know

When you load the rounds into the mag box assembly (you aren't having any issues with your floorplate), tuck the rounds into the side of the mag (should be right side first) and slide them all the way to the rear. Then insert the second round on the right side of the mag box, again sliding it all the way to the rear, etc. As well, make sure the mag cartridge riser (known as a follower, actually) fits properly, and the spring is working properly. Clean, lube lightly, re-assemble. - dan

We had the fully adjustable B&C at the time he decided on the stock he selected, but are now out of stock, and seeing as B&C stocks can not be legally exported at this time due to their not being DDTC registered chances of finding 1 in country are low.
50 made an informed decision in selecting his stock.

50, sounds like your problem is with cartridge OAL or not pushing them all the way to the back of the mag box.

If a cartridge is too long, the nose drags on the front of the mag box keeping it from slidely freely up and down.

When you move the bolt to extract the fired case, the next shell cannot pop up high enough for the bolt to pick up.

If handloading, just reduce the seating depth so the nose of the bullet doesn't rub.

If using factory ammo, start reloading :) or go with a shorter cartridge OAL (lighter bullet).
