New 358 Win Improved

Hey, I would be the first to agree with you if it wasn't the case. But apples to apples here mate: my 375-338 matches 375H&H numbers, albeit with higher pressures. The 338 Neutered *ahem* Federal does not come close to 338 Win. Mag territory.

I've been known to be wrong quite often though, so don't put too much faith in it. (All in good fun Tod; cool rig, and I actually quite like the stock.)

neutered 338? this coming from an owner of a 375-338 LOL

I find it quite amusing when people compare the .338 Fed to the .338WM. It was never made or designed to compete with it. Nobody compares the .358 Win to the .358 Norma.

I'll keep hunting with the 358 Norma, the 225TSX at 2950 answers all questions any game animal ever asks.

And let you guys generate 9000 posts over the 338 Federal or the 375 Ruger or whatever blows your hair back. All these "this is better than ??" are much ado about nothing. I understand the fun and games but c'mon...

9000 discussing the kings, vs 3000 discussing Big Stick - potatoe potato! Welcome to the internet, nothing but loose #####es and good times await!

I've recently acquired a Husqvarna in 358 Norma Magnum and I've also acquired 'some' Barnes TSX in 225gr. I plan to use it to fill my Moose draw this year and was wondering if you'd mind sending me a PM as to the rifle and load you're using.

No worries. I tried a few powders. 4350 gets you there but I settled on 73 grains of Ramshot BigGame. As mentioned 2950 fps and excellent accuracy.

The rifle? I posted it a couple of weeks back on the 358 Norma thread.

Bill Leeper put this together for me a few years ago. It's a 358 Norma Long Neck which uses untrimmed 300win brass; it is essentially a 358 Norma with a 35 Whelen neck. A M70 classic stainless magnum length action with Wisner extractor. Pac-Nor 22 1/2" 1-12 twist barrel. D'Arcy Echols Legend standard fill stock made by McMillan, one of only two "swirly" Legends in existence. Leupold QR low rings hold a VX-III 1.76-6X32 scope with Premier Reticles #4 reticle. All up it weighs 8 1/4 pounds and balance on the rear edge of the front guard screw, and puts 225TSX's at 2950 fps way under an inch. It's the best all-around hunting rifle I have ever owned, ever seen for that matter.

I like it enough that Bill is putting together it's mate, a 270 on an early M70 action in an Echols edge stock. It will balance the same as the Norma but weigh about 3/4 pound less. I can't imagine a better pair of hunting rifles.

You sold the 338 Fed yet? What's next? :)

Still have the 8mm?

P.S. I don't talk about Big Stick either. ;)

still got the 8mm. Too scared to shoot it, but I still got it! :D

havent sold the 338f, but next is a 35 Rem Ackley Improved. Will surpass the 358 Win, like all other cartridges do handily :nest:

Thanks guy. The 358NM is a new 'toy' for me so wanting to use it this season, I thought I'd ask and see what has/had worked well for others. Initially I wanted a Schultz but when I saw this Husqvrrna, I weakened and don't regret doing so.

Using a 250gr bullet the gentleman I bought it from tells me 74grs of IMR 4350has worked well for him. That load info, and IMR 4350 being one of my favorite powders for some of the larger capacity cases, appeared to be a good starting point. My 'plan' is to go with the Barnes 225gr TSX.

Initial tests, using Norma factory ammo, look promising to say the least.

Nice gun and chambering, but it's not so wonderful that it breaks the laws of physics.

The 358 should be able to push same weight bullets 75-100 fps faster than the 338 at the same pressures, so it makes me wonder why the 358 was loaded down. Check out the trajectory of the same 35 cal bullet at 2600 fps, and then run some data on a 250gr bullet and you'll see that the 358 Win can push a 250gr at almost the same MV as a 338 can push a 225. The 338 and 358 are virtually interchangeable, but if anything, the 358 has the slight upper hand.

358's seem to be loaded to slightly lower pressures, most likely because they were originally chambered in lever guns. I knew a guy who rebarreled a Win 88 to 33-08 back in the late 70's or so, very neat little rifle. The only advantage I can think of for the 33-08/338F (same caliber, really) is bullet selection. Having said that, it would make a great all around rifle, if kept in a LW package. FWIW - dan

Johnn, 74 grains of IMR4350 worked really well for me with the 250. 2780 fps. 75 grains only gave 2810.

Thanks guy. The gentleman on site, Why not?, that I got the rifle from said he had good luck with that same load. I've just loaded some Hornady 250gr SP with that load. I have some Barnes 225gr TSX that will probably end up with a similar powder charge. Thanks again:).

All the norma's came out to fend off the fed. LOL

Where can I get a moose medallian like that, would make a great gong for the .22 :p
