New Build - .375 Ruger

Of course, European makers usually stop forend length at about 10 inches, maximum, regardless of barrel length. Barrel band swivel bases broke up the long expanse of barrel ahead of the forend and allowed the rifle to ride lower on the shoulder when carried with the sling over the shoulder. A European or British rifle with a 26" barrel looks different but OK nonetheless. American makers in the pre-war era, often went with forends of 12" or even more for 24" barreled rifles. Americans usually preferred a stock mounted swivel base probably because much American rifle building was approached from the basis of shooting with the sling as a holding aid. As time went on, American makers also made stocks straighter than did their European counterparts. Again, this is likely because Europeans built offhand rifles while Americans built prone rifles. Shooting styles may have dictated stock design or stock design may have dictated shooting style. I can't say which. The early FN's and Brownings were an example of an Americanized stock with their quite-long forarms. Their slightly humpy shape in the wrist/grip didn't look great but did a good job of positioning the hand.
The stock on Mauser 98's rifle is typical of a late 40's American stock given a European forend. It is also an example of some pretty nice finishing work. Notice, the pores are filled and the finish is smooth and uniform. That's also a nice job of rust bluing. Regards, Bill.

Once I got the rifle back and finished the stock mods, I slow rust blued all the metal and refinished the stock.

You and Bill did a very nice job with that rifle. What product did you use for the rust bluing?

Bill Leeper = A walking talking Wikipedia/Google/Encyclopedia of firearms. A no B.S. approach to am industry overloaded with B.S. and wannabe's. Nice rifle guys.

I used a product thats brewed up by a fellow who lives in the Lower Mainland.

His e-mail is(was??) mundane_rinpoche@yahoo.com . (I have permission to post his address)

The same product may be available from a dealer from this site - user name Boss Hogg. His website is http://www.accurateaction.com/products.php

Another product I like and that's available from Brownells is Laurels Mountains Barrel Brown and Degreaser. This is the ONLY rust bluing product that Brownells will ship through the mail to Canada. Don't let the name fool you. The only difference between browning and bluing is the boiling.

It's amazing how many don't know that rule. I hate long forends on a short bbl.
.

No Mannlicher stocks on your rack? :)

I am less concerned with esthetics, and prefer the forend to be long enough that I can grab hold and not worry about a cut hand from the swivel stud in recoil. If the forend is too short, it doesn't matter where you put the swivel on the forend, on a hard kicker it will get you sooner or later. Barrel band slings attachments look good and allow the muzzle to be lower when the rifle is slung muzzle up, but I like the option of slinging up when position shooting so they don't work for me, and I carry muzzle down.

That would be the exception to the rule. I'd love to have a 20" full stock Mauser in either 6.5x55, 6.5x57 or 7x57.

I am currently getting a laminated stock added to my 700 375/338. I cut the forend off at 9" and requested the bbl band a couple inches past that. The bbl is 22", so it should not only look right but should handle well as those Boyds lam stock have a pretty thick forend.

Yes, I know I am a bastard. Yes, I know it has been a LONG time. I think that if I could get past the large pile of junk my wife piled inside the door of my workshop, along with a mountain of crap the kids brought with them when they moved back home, I may be able to finish the work.

Hey, did you get a magazine for it yet? If so, send it to me.

It is my June/July project, along with landscaping the back yard, painting the house, replacing the gutters, replacing my fence.......:(
