Sean,
I have played around with a few red dot optics over the years. As a matter of ancient historical record, I am pretty sure I was the first person on the Wet Coast to use a Red Dot at an IPSC match [ circa 1984 or so ]. This happened by accident when the front sight on my .45 Colt Commander fell off during a match. I had a Govt model grip screw scope mount and a cheap red dot in my range bag, and finished the match with an "optical" assist.
Back in those days, pre Gamers, and pretty well pre rule book Nazis and range lawyers, you could do things like that at an IPSC match.
Didn't like the red dots on pistols much then, even when my eyeballs were young and innocent, and still don't like red dots on pistols ... but obviously I am in the minority.
I do like some types of low powered/zero magnification/illuminated optics on rifles and carbines, but I still find anything with a tiny red dot hard for me to use quickly. You guys with younger eyeballs may see those small red dots OK,
but at 60 plus years of age,
I'll sacrifice a bit on over all size and battery life,
to get a big juicy reticle I can actually see quickly.
I recently tried a Chinese clone Micro, and the Bushnell clone Micro, and while I like the concept very much, both had dots too darn small for these old eyes to pick up quickly and consistently. I liked the Bushnell ACOG CLONE "T" reticle, and the Barska Acog clone reticle on my ARs, and liked the genuine EOTEC HOLO circle and dot reticles enough to buy a few of these.
I may end up with a non-battery powered ACOG scope type some day, probably one with a teensy bit of magnification.
OR,
if Aimpoint made a nice BIg fat circle and dot reticle, or a "T" reticle,
then maybe I would buy it.
Until then,
YPMMV is even more true than usual ...
I got my latest EO from someone who loved the holo concept, until he spent some time looking through the EO lens, and found he couldn't get used to the EO "PIXELATED" image, no matter how much he tried to wrap his eyeballs around it.
Yep,
people with astigmatism,
and/or "stubborn brain image processing issues",
may have problems with the EO projected HOLO images.
I like what I see through an EO,
but of course,
as always,
YPMMV
So with optics,
just like with shoes and toothbrushes,
No one else can really choose the best fit for you.
Try before you buy,
and look before you leap,
would be some very good advice ...
especially with EXPENSIVE optics.
