New Guide Gun for Me! - Now with Pics!

I just spoke to Darrel, he's shipping my rifle this afternoon, which means it's going to be sitting at home waiting for me and driving me nuts for the next two weeks or so before I get home from work.

I also had him add a hammer extension, since I plan for this to be an all-season gun and I expect the extended hammer will be easier to operate with gloves. In fact, someone on this board posted a picture months ago of an extension equipped guide gun, which is what gave me the idea.

I know the cross bolt safety is often a point of derision with these guns. Do most of you just make do or are there some hardware solutions to this weak point?

Personally I don't like the cross bolt safety at all but it is fixable without it costing a cent. Take the buttstock off of the rifle. When you look at the back of the action to the left of the tang you will see a small hex head screw with a thread sealant on it. Scrape the sealant off until the screw can be turned. Push the crossbolt safety to the left and then turn the screw firmly all the way in. With it tightened down you no longer have a crossbolt safety.

My brother also dislikes the crossbolt but he has a different approach. He pushed the crossbolt to the left and then put a rubber O-ring on it so that it can't go back.

Each of us likes or own way best but neither of us likes having a crossbolt safety. A friend of mine who got a click instead of a bang when deer hunting likes the crossbolt even less than we do!

Enjoy your Marlin, they're a fun rifle!

I feed my Marlin 54grs. of AA-2015 and anything from a 340gr. cast Hollow pt. to my hammer load of 480gr. WFN GC, the latter going 1868 fps.(not for everyone)

Ben, those sound like some great handloads. Is that 480 grainer your own casting or is it a commercial bullet? If it's homemade, what mould are you using?

So I finally got home from work the night of December 23rd, after 30 days in the field. Look what was waiting for me as an early Christmas present :)

All she needs now is a sling, and I’m still waiting for the cross-bolt safety replacement to arrive from Wisconsin. I bought a few boxes of .45/70 and have been out blasting in the back yard. With the decelerator installed the recoil is much less than I had expected – more of a push than a punch.

I know it’s just another Guide Gun, but she’s my first so here’s some photos. The last two pictures also show the rifle rack that my sister made me for Christmas.

Very Nice...

Congrates you are going to love that gun and they are so totally accurate it will amaze you.

I have a 1895GS and would like to do something to the lever because I find it to small but I haven't found a lever that I like because all of the alternatives are to big of a loop for my liking...

Camp Cook. Tom Norman offered to open up the lever on my 1895 GS. He can pretty much open it to the size you want.

The problem with using Tom is that he is retiring...

He will be finishing the work that he has on hand but not taking any new work in.

I've thought about taking the lever over to my buddies welding/fabricating shop here in Abbotsford and have him cut/reshape/weld it to exactly what I want.

Nice gun Mikey T......I have tried to do the same with my Cowboy gun with 26" barrel.....I don't want to hijack this thread but....there have been questions about my loads using the MT Chambers 480gr. Wide Flat Point Gas Check.....I tested this load with up to 57grs of AA2015 and over 1900 fps. but cut it back to 54grs due to recoil, no other press. signs, W-W cases, Fed. 210 primers. Those 500 gr. shown would not work with this combo as they would take up too much powder space and increase pressure. Another load tested by Mitchell ballistics used the MT Chambers 465gr. FP GC, it was also pressure tested by Accurate Arms.....Marlin 22" barrel...55grs. H-335...W-W cases...fed 210primer....1920fps. Due to reloading circumstances beyond my control however, I can not assume any liability with these top end loads, they are not for recoil sensitive shooters.

Try Hornady Reloading Manual (2nd edition) for a 45-70: 300 gr. hornady JHP, Federal 210 primer, 49.5 grs. IMR 4891 (kinda hot). Had my Guide Gun for about 5 or 6 years now, seems to like this load and accurate out 200 m. Not bad at 300m either, but pretty high back at 100m, if sighted to hit at 3. Find the middle ground if you want to shoot that far. Great looking gun with wise upgrades. I too currently use a William's Firesight, but I'm going to try a Tru Glo green sight instead. I'll let you know how it goes.

If you can't get them from Wholesale or Lock & Load, then try Western Gun Parts on the west side of Edmonton. on 107 Avenue, west of 178 St. 780-489-5711. Give them a call.

Are the Williams Fire sight and peep sights availble locally
IE Edmonton

The Shooters edge in Cowtown also had some last time I was there. Shipping would be cheap, just another option if no shop has any local for ya.
