New Info on 870 12.5"/14" Barrel Re-registering

Well almost three months to the day I recieved my new certificate for the 14" barrel. Of course in a few more days we may be dismantling the registry.......

B.U.M.
Part of the changes slimed in last April was a requirement to re-register if calibre or barrel length was "permanently" changed (longer than 14 days). They now cover the case of switch barrel shotties by "requiring" that they be re-registered as such! Since there is no real control of whar goes into the Regs, this is another example of "legislation by regulation".

so let me get this straight if somewhere like Dlask manufactures a 14.5"barrel for my wife's win 120 i can slap that puppy on and its still non restricted?

Baalan

Is there a way to reregister a 870 as restricted? is there a frt# for that?

So i could install a pistol grip along with the 12.5" barrel (because in this configuration, the OAL is less than 660mm 26" )

Like this;

Dlask would have to manufactur the whole gun, ie: they would have to purchase an 870, slap a barrel on it and then reregister it as a newly manufactured firearm.

not sure exactly how that works....

The way it was explained to me about the shotgun shortening deal was as follows. If you shorten down a shotgun to be a handgun...it becomes a handgun, thus restricted. One can go on and on about the model and make of the barrel etc but if it is short...its now restricted. Anyone fooling around with this loophole is foolhardy. The shotty in the above pic for all intents and purposes is now a handgun and I wouldnt want to be caught with it if its registered as my waterfowling piece. For reference, have a look in the Criminal Code of Canada under total firearm length.

I seem to recall a conversation on here a year or two back where it came up that someone like Dlask would have to actually make a new receiver to register as restricted, rather than manufacture a "new" firearm with a receiver that had already been registered as non-restricted. They had to start with a receiver with no registration in the past.

Kinda like you can't take a prohib that's been modified to a restricted, and convert it back to a prohib... they are willing to change things to be less "evil", but not more evil. Not sure if my recall is accurate here though, perhaps someone else will chime in.

Has anyone noticed that the CFC website now wears the RCMP logo ? Maybe they're in some sort of data transition period and the computer systems are all over the place, that might explain why they seem to have "lost" a few guns here and there ...

Can anyone help inform me as to how I could go about getting my hands on an 870 with an 8.5 inch barrel?, I heard you still can but its really cutting it close to the OAL criteria. I realise that they would be excessivly loud and do not hold many shells, but I would love to get my hands on one.

It's not a problem at all.

Phone the CFC and tell them "through factory customizations" the length has been reduced to under 26". They'll get you to measure the OAL and barrel length, then send ya a new cert for your now restricted 870 :)

The law says, you cut/modify it to make it under 26" = prohib.

Factory customization = restricted.

It's the same deal with the Krinker Plinkers going under 26".

Hope that helps.

call Dlask they will build one for you. either you supply the gun or they do (chack my Avatar for an albeit small picture- one of the threads has big pics). With a Remington plastic stock the OAL is 29 inches so there's lots of room legal wise. ( added a better remington recoil pad but that's it so far) . i eyeballed the stock length to a knoxx specops stock and it looks like it might have an inch to spare with the latter. but will have to mount it to confirm.

the mag is tube is cut down and will hold two 3-inch shells but three 2 3/4 shells :D
