NEW ITEM: Dominion Arms Socom 18

Ok " shoot me straight" here. Whos got one and are they worth it? Or are they a jamfest that im gonna regret buying 30 mins after getting it? What ammo functions best in it? I ask these questions cause it is still chinese made

I've got one of the earlier '07 era long-barrels. They are worth a lot more than they cost, they work fantastic, have acceptable accuracy (and can be customized if you're into that, all the same as a Springfield M1A can). They will eat up any 7.62/.308 ammo I've put through them, although if I remember you should keep it under 180 Gr bullets due to throat depth or something? Someone can confirm that part. It takes Norinco surplus 7.62 FMJ ammo (that's available as a combo) without skipping a beat. DO IT!

This is the 6th one I have bought and this version is the best overall. Very happy with it.These style of rifles are a great platform to tweak abit. If you buy one try and get to a clinic put on by Hungry (TacticalTeacher) .

For reloading the highest recommended bullet weight is 168 grains and if you are buying store bought ammo get the Federal powershock 150 grain it comes in a blue box and works very well.

Must... Resist... I'm new to M14's and all the indexing and sight and op-rod issues are making me wonder if its worth buying one that I won't have the chance to shoot for a couple of months or if I should just wait until I can take it out and testfire but at a 50% price increase but with a lower probability of issues with no recourse...

I have three of these rifles, including a new SOCOM model. IF YOU GET A GOOD ONE they are_not_ a jamfest, but rather a great value. What you have to do is look the rifle over carefully for problems [you can see serious barrel index problems with a simple test...see the stickies] and get back to the vendor when you spot them. Lemons do slip through, and a few people have had bad experiences. Most of us have had very good experiences however...believe me, there wouldn't be any Norinco fans if they made uniformly bad products.

Norinco ammo works fine, as does PPU...you want to find something that resembles 7.62x51 ball ammo as much as possible...that's what these rifles are designed to shoot best. Such ammo is easy to find or make, if you're a reloader. There are ways to make heavier bullets work in the M305, but that's an advanced study.

If you are really interested, read all about the M305s in this thread and the various threads in the Battle Rifle forum. There is loads of great information, so you can make an informed decision. Myself, I would say 'go for it'.

Placed my order on the 7th, and just got my shipping confirmation, I look forward to posting pics soon. Also if anyone know of a good gunsmith for the m14 in the gta, please let me know. Also if anyone is doing an m14 clinic in or near the gta, thanks.

Two ways ....look down the barrel from the muzzle end after removing gas piston and putting a small punch or bit in the gas port.See if the gas port is right at 6:00 .The best way is to use 2 straight edges .One clamped on the heel of the receiver and another on the sight base. When you look down the length of the rifle the two flat edges should be perfectly inline . Now with these new Socoms the front sight is on the gas locking ring so you will have to ensure that is on correctly (centered) .

How can you tell if the barrel is over-indexed? Can someone post a pic, so a noob like me can learn!? ;)

Cheers,

Look at post 479.....I got a lemon. If I still lived in Chilliwack I would have picked up my Socom at the Hacs show in Burnaby....and would have been able to hand pick my rifle. I don't like ordering guns on-line

Is there any way of asking to get a nicely indexed one?
Even if let's say you pay the employee 1h so he can handpick one/inspect one so that you are free from these problems?

When in stock the charge handle rubs on stock and receiver. I think if I fire it the charge handle would come out of its track. Comments?

fixing a loose op rod guide is very easy....knock out the roll pin on the guide and slide it forward .Take a hammer and a punch and make alot of dimples in the barrel where the guide sits. Put on some loctite and replce op rod guide and roll pin. This will tighten it right up.Oh ya.....get rid of the buffer on it as they are junk .
