New Long Range construction started

If I go short action, it will be single shot, so case capacity won't under-utilized. And I haven't had to extract a loaded round yet, and even if I had to, that what bolt releases are for... ;-)

At the moment, my decision looks like it will be largely based on availability though.....

Not complaining, not in the least. Despite the drive, I think this range will see a lot of me.
As for steel, do you have any sort of requirements as to what can be donated? Hardness, thickness etc?

We would like to see AR 500. Most of the current steel is Supplied by Zombie Supply Canada. We even get a discount just mention that it is for the Longest Mile. We will take as much as we can get our hands on. Since it is approved for 50 BMG we want to have steel that will take the abuse. I think we can cheat and use lighter gage out past 1000 but we have not had any testing with the big guns at this point with lighter metal. Also we may go with lighter metal at a later date for matches but that will be stored away so we can control the calibers that would be used in the matches to save the steel. We will work with everyone as this is all put together by volunteers and sponsors and we have 15 back stops on the ranges plus the pistol range to out fit with metal.

any preliminary interest in f-class matches

Jefferson

im interested. im following this thread for that info too. it would reduce my drive time as opposed to going to the homestead range. or as a supplement. both would be awesome on alternating weekends.

So you're not stuck with buying all the steel from Steve? Even with his "discount", there are other target suppliers that are WAY cheaper, and provide the same quality.

You should provide a list of the other suppliers. It would be helpful to see who else has quality steel available and what the specs are. The current steel being provided is 5/8" AR500 and is all waterjet cut to maintain the hardness at the edges. I havent seen to many suppliers that provide 5/8" or larger and most is laser cut. That should be fine for all the distance berms, but for the boomers (.338 snipetac, .408 cheytac, .375 cheytac, .50bmg) 1/2" just doesnt hold up over time as long.

Been talking to a guy who may have a lead on some 3/4" for a decent price. Just need an economical way to get it cut without ruining the edges.

No we will explore options, the boys were very generous in sending out the current steel. Donated and delivered, can't beat that! If you noticed when you were out there we have a few more pieces up than the AR 500 supplied by Zombi. I suspect they will not last long as they show some wear already. 3/4 would be great, and we will take any thing we can get our hands on. It is nice that Zombi Supply Canada has inventory and they are ready to go. Its like hitting the easy button.

One thought is if a local business is willing to support the range, members can support the local business.

If anyone sets up a fun shoot, I will try and make it down. Hope to make it down anyways once or twice a year.

Good point, the water jet cutting is not available every where... most likely added cost for the added quality

I would be in for a fun shoot too, have to pick a date

toofar2late I like what your doing!! I will be joining in the Edson F&G in new year if it is linked to this new range. Live 10 hours away but do want to support this awesome undertaking.
What is the Edson F&G calendar year?
Smiling.
