New Off Road Vehicle Laws in BC

I paid $190 for insurance on a YZ450F through Wawanesa. First time I ever bothered with insurance and a plate. I used to leave my house and take dirt roads to my riding area. About six years ago the Mounties started bringing out a Rhino to catch guys. I felt embarrassed for them. The only people they could catch were on old Honda trikes. Then two years ago they started bringing out RZRs. I have heard from multiple people that they wait till they hear you coming and then block the trail and demand papers. If BC goes the same way I feel really bad for you. It sucks. Has nothing to do with safety or solving crimes. All about control.

nice I'll give them a call once the insurance runs out next fall.

Blocking a trail sounds pretty stupid and dangerous and I can see them doing it, just like they rammed one of my buddies with their car when he was like 13 lol, sometimes I wonder what goes through the mind of a cop, they seem to like making huge problems out of small issues just to have a chance to prove who is boss?

I think it was canada day weekend I was out camping with my friend and there was this little 5 year old cruising around on his 50 about 150 yards from his parents camper and the cops pretty much arrested the kid and then went and fined the parents for not supervising him. There were probably at least 5-6 camps all within 150 yards of this little tyke and everyone was watching him cruise around just havin a good time, till the heroes showed up that is, then he was stuck doing circles for the rest of the weekend in a 50 yard patch of grass in front of the camper...

The funny thing is that was the only time last year I saw them there, because the place was packed with people to fine.

Last year there was a heavy-handed crackdown on boat licensing and boat registration on Haida Gwaii
In fact they were seizing bolts you had to show them the registration to prove it belong to you before he could even get it back
They were seizing boats left and right around here

All boats in Canada have to be registered through Transport Canada. It's free.

I'm guessing there were some boat thefts going on in your area for them to ask for verification of ownership.

It seems to me that all the arguments for this scheme are familiar... oh yes, registration makes us safer.

Sound familiar? LOL

You guys can thank all the riders from Alberta that come and rip up the place and just laugh at the CO's when they get ticketed.

It's way overdue. I'm really happy to see this.

I really can't fathom all this fuel operated outdoor recreation anyway. Don't people come equipped with feet any more? Jeez. You can't go anywhere without somebody burning past you on a machine of some kind, be it a quad, a sled or a jet ski.

They even have machines for little kids. Why not teach them how to use a compass?

That reminds me of a person on another site a few years ago bragging about going upcountry to open up their cabin for a long weekend and how excited the kids were to go quadding on the logging roads around the cabin.

After the weekend she was looking for a lawyer because of a near collision between a child on a quad and a motorist. I think the quad had gone off the road and was damaged, allegedly because of the other guy. Her little darlings were innocent of course.

There is a lot of irresponsible ORV use in B.C. and any move to curb it even a little is fine by me.

The only part of this proposed law that interests me is that idiots who damage the enviroment can now be (hypothetically) identified and charged. Has this happened in any other province to any degree? Or is it mostly just writing tickets for no helmet, etc.

Here in Ontario the lifetime plate was $35 and insurance on an 07 Grizzly 700 is only $180 a year.

I agree 100% with mandatory plates due to the simple fact that there are so many ding dong's riding ATV's who insist on trespassing and/or damaging property. These people give responsible riders a bad name and having a plate on the machine makes it 1000x easier to identify who owns the machine, which will hopefully reduce acts of stupidity that often results in access being blocked.

It doesn't make anyone safer. But, plates definitely help identify who it was that just tore up your newly planted crop, crashed through your gate, is driving on a maintained trail without a trail pass, or disrupted your hunt while trespassing.

I'd say we can thank idiots riding ATV's damaging property and causing a nuisance for more rules and regulations.

BC is the last frontier for ATV riders. They flock in from Alberta and the Northwest US, precisely because there are no controls, unlike in their home juristictions. It has been an ongoing issue because they just laugh at the CO's and the RCMP don't have the manpower to deal with it.

There is no boats being stolen in fact just about every house has an boat and outboard motor sitting outside unlock
It is a seven hour ferry ride to the mainland or you have to fly it would be impossible for somebody to steal a boat or larger outboard and not get caught
On are island here we have a very small population we were targeted
you watch and see this year other small communities in northern BC will be targeted
They will slowly work their way south and force everybody to comply

all cops do today is hand out fines, not sure where you are finding these officers that are tired of even only doing that

Well having read your other posts your viewpoint here isn't surprising. Based on your posts there is little doubt the A hole tax (tickets) have been applied many times during your interactions which would give that incorrect perception. In reality less than 5% are engaged in traffic enforcement and the rest aren't. For that 95 percent you generally have to push to get a ticket or the problem has gotten out of hand. That 95 percent don't really have the Time or interest, unless of course the interest is being created thanks to a few individuals. The perceptions from your posts might simply be a self fullfiling prophecy.

Boat theft in BC is a big problem, but I agree not on Haida Gwaii. Who did the seizures? part of the problem is Customs who ran the old program made a huge mess of it and only wanted the tax revenue. The records they had were pretty much useless. So they basically had to start from scratch again. Service Canada was handling it fairly well, now it's been contracted out to a private company/ provincial government service body.

I have been told it was a joint effort between Coast Guard and RCMP I had to work all summer up in Alberta and Missed out on the salmon fishing
When I got home I wanted to go halibut fishing but nobody wanted to go out of fear
These heavy-handed tactics have worked in the past and will continue to work
Maybe it's just my own paranoia getting the best of me HAAHAA

Will this include dirt bikes? I seriously doubt I'm going to plate my YZ.
Here we are also required to have a working headlight, tail light, spark arrester, and the plate has to be visible from 60 ' on either the front or the back. No helmets required lol and we can ride on all county roads at a max 50 km/hr

not an A hole tax, but I speak from personal experience just like others here do.

I haven't had a traffic ticket in many years and less than I can count on one hand in my entire driving career. I treat others the way I expect to be treated which seems to be a trait lost on crown corporations and crown employees that I am forced to have interactions with or those who's interactions are forced upon me.

Last year well Hunting we got a moose up and Burns lake by time we had gut our moose it was starting to get too late to take the trail we came in on so we took the road hoping it would connect to the main logging road going back to camp it didn't it went straight to the highway
I broke the chain going to the rear wheel on my Rokon 2x2 motorcycle
Being a 2 Wheel drive motorcycle I was able to ride the bike in front wheel drive only but now I'm really low on gas, No helmet, rifle racked to my handlebars and covered in Moose blood going down the highway haahaa
so I had to go right through town like that as soon as I pulled into the gas station here is a cop sitting there playing on the computer lol
Right away I figure oh #### am I in trouble now so I pulled up beside her and told her(I know this is illegal but it was an emergency and I had no choice and can you please hang onto my rifle for me well I get some gas )
HAAHAA I got gas got my gun and rode back out of town rifle on the rack no helmet and in front wheel drive
Not every cop is a dickhead

I think we can change out "idiots riding ATV's" with criminals using guns and we can pretty much continue down a parallel path of registration and prohibition of using off-road vehicles in BC... crap :(

No they aren't, but what you said is telling.

"as soon as I pulled into the gas station here is a cop sitting there playing on the computer lol
Right away I figure oh #### am I in trouble now"

It shouldn't be like that. The first feeling you get when you see a cop shouldn't be fear of prosecution even if you know you've done nothing wrong, but I think almost any person you ask these days would say yep that's how I feel when a cop pulls up beside me at a red light.

I think like the feeling should be "Oh nice a cop, now I know nothing bad can happen within 500 meters of this person" but unfortunately anything bad that might happen will probably be a result of interacting with them.
