After checking the 2008 catalog, I saw that Savage was finally making a detachable mag system in 223.
The initial thought was that it would be staggered feed. Since I was getting some parts from Savage anyways, I decided to order a mag and bottom floorplate. Mag Part # is 106243 (there is only one anyways).
Package arrived today and to my utmost pleasure, the mag is CENTER FEED

It fits into the new standard short action bottom metal which can also be retrofitted to the new Stevens/Savage blind center feed mag actions (ensure action screw spacing).
For me, this is huge because I can now get excited about building a tactical rifle in 223 with a slick feeding center feed mag (a la AI style) AND which allows a longer OAL then common AR/Mini 14 mags allow. The present mag length is the same as the reg rifle mag. I can seat to an OAL of 2.415".
However, if you look at the pics, the mag is blocked which can be modified for longer OAL if desired. Get those 80gr Amax seated out a bit and still function smooth and slick.
I will have to look into a new gen 223 rifle when funds allow and put this det mag system in. Or I could get creative and try and splice it into the existing rifle I have.
The mag now fits 5rds and can be modified with a bit of metal working to hold more. I am hoping that the next step is for Savage to start making 10rds mags for both the 308 and 223.
I have already talked at length with their customer techs but no one higher up the food chain.
The mag release could also be lengthened easily to work easier with the extended 10rds mags. Or Savage could easily make new parts for the LE lineup.
For now, I will enjoy what there is...
