New YouTube video. Brian Gallup Hunts Cape Buffalo with a .577 NE Single Shot.

The debate rages on over solids or softs for the first shot. I use a solid for the first shot.

With a solid for the first shot there is a chance that it might go right through the first animal and wound/kill another buff in a heard situation. (I think that is one of the reasons that PH's ask us to use softs for the first shot.)
With a soft for the first shot there is a chance that the expanding bullet will not penetrate straight to the heart. ( May miss the heart even with a Swift A-Frame, TSX or NorthFork. They say.)

I have killed 5 buffalo from different angles. Two were with a 375. All with soliids and all were hit through the heart. All were one shot kills.
I hunted for the last decade with a seasoned PH in the Waterberg mountains, north of Vaalwater. He asked me to use a solid first shot on buffalo then softs for follow up. So that's how I got started on solids first.
There are lot's of folks who swear by softs for the first shot.

Great thread and discussion...... Mbogo is a dream hunt of mine.....

Could have done without the naked Hoyt part......

Really Hoyt?..... long legs, great big lungs and motivation?... you described my ex to a T....... and she is the very reason I haven't been able to afford a buffalo hunt!

I suppose I have cost you some money also... but at least with me, you have something to show for it... but then again she gets some credit for the boys also...

Interesting how you designed the stock - the ammo holder permits you to widen the butt significantly, yet without making it look super chunky.

Worth it in both cases....... except I continue to enjoy interacting with you...... as for her, well anyways..... in hunting terms let's call it "ground shrinkage" and leave it at that.....

Beautiful pictures from the hunt, and to be honest my initial thought when I watched the video was that the hit looked low..... thanks to gatehouse posting the pics, I can see that was obviously not the case..... well done......

Why are you arguing over bullet design and caliber.

I'd roll up with my semi automatic Serbu BFG .50 cal loaded with 750 grain Hornady A-max and rest that beast with a shot anywhere in it's body, from any which body orientation. If the first round never dropped him, 5 more would be down range in 2 seconds and with the recoil of a 20 guage with birdshot. Then I'd cut off the head like you boys skin your grizzly bears and walk away like a boss. That's how I roll.

Why play games? 2800 feet per second and 12,000 foot pounds energy. Case closed.

Yah. Shoot dangerous game with a match bullet. Good plan... who knew buffalo were made of paper...

How old are you umchorn?

1899 Good point. It also gives it a 3/8 inch cast off. The butt bad is a Limbsaver Nitro that is very wide. That helps.
The stock and comb is high and straight which reduces the muzzle lift. (Also makes it a bit slower handling). You will note how high the scope is.
The big hook cut out in the front of the comb is so that my thumb does not hit my nose. I am a stock crawler.
The stock is sawn in half vertically, before finishing, the groove for the stock bolt is routered out and then the two halves are epoxy/fibergassed back together for strength.
The brass spacer is epoxied to the wood to prevent cracking. The forearm is weighted with epoxy/lead shot. I will change that making it lighter and thinner.
( It is actually a bit of a pig to handle. It feels more like a heavy varmint rifle. Slow to get into but nice and tame off the sticks. It is not quick handling like an African express rifle.)

Hey how did you get that ballin double rifle you was sellin on EE?? Client gratuity? Just wonderin. Nice rifle...a true fine example of craftsmanship. Nice to see a true fine rifle now and again. Too pimp for me...and not semi auto. Admittedly I've needed more than 2 shots to get the job done.

Thanks for your response Superbrad.
The old 577NE case was meant for different powder. With modern powder there is a .6 inch space between the powder and the bullet! ( the case is about 1/2 inch too long.) The space is filled with two cards and a fiber wad. In the video you see the wad flying though the air and it makes it look like I am standing about 10 ft to the right of my actual position. (I am actually way to the left of the camera man, as I remember. )
Also, I nearly was too low! The bullet just caught the bottom of the heart.

In your brief absence, you have missed lots of umchorn2 activity...... some even in the OT........

Not directing anyone on how to post....... but best not feed the troll imop.......

Here is a quote from our "professional game manager"

I'm coming to Lizard Lake with truck loads of guys and we're gonna have an American style deer drive and smash your deer herd to does and fawns. The semi autos will be roaring!!

There comes a time when it is fun to debate...... but sometimes you have to realize you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube......

In light of the wonderful trophy, i completely respect that humility....... well done

Oh, that was the wad flying, I thought it was the bullet. I had the pleasure of shooting a Westly Richards double rifle in .577 2 3/4 Express. I think it was a 650 gr. bullet. Recoil was not bad, less than a 12 Gauge with slugs.

buckbrush, I have never shot a double rifle and I remember only holding one. That double WR must have been nice. You are right about the recoil. Usually over rated. ( Don't tell anyone.)
