The debate rages on over solids or softs for the first shot. I use a solid for the first shot.
With a solid for the first shot there is a chance that it might go right through the first animal and wound/kill another buff in a heard situation. (I think that is one of the reasons that PH's ask us to use softs for the first shot.)
With a soft for the first shot there is a chance that the expanding bullet will not penetrate straight to the heart. ( May miss the heart even with a Swift A-Frame, TSX or NorthFork. They say.)
I have killed 5 buffalo from different angles. Two were with a 375. All with soliids and all were hit through the heart. All were one shot kills.
I hunted for the last decade with a seasoned PH in the Waterberg mountains, north of Vaalwater. He asked me to use a solid first shot on buffalo then softs for follow up. So that's how I got started on solids first.
There are lot's of folks who swear by softs for the first shot.
