Night vision questions

No experience with the AO3351, but I have their PVS14 Gen 2+ to pick up tomorrow in the mail. The lower priced models use an Ekran FEP tube. The higher priced use Harder Digital tubes (cat 1 and cat0) and are considered MILSPEC. I bugged them a lot before buying mine.

I would like to hear what you think about the company and the gear. I've used issued gear but have not looked through civilian stuff. I would like to set something up.

I don't think it opens anything up (availability) just changes in processing/departments but I'd love to be wrong if someone can correct me...

Says the guy who’s selling his civilian DBAL. How’s that working out for you ? Buyers remorse?

The only one worth it is the MAWL and it’s a pain to find down south. Good luck getting one here. It’s also 2500$+ USD.

Woah how am I only reading this salt now?
Imagine not owning multiple PEQ15, DBAL and MAWL and getting salty when a dude on the internet sells his buddies DBAL. BC really do be putting something in the watersupply.

Do you prefer Binocular or Monocular for head/helmet mounted?

I got my Sightmark Bino kit in and it works pretty well for entry level NVG. As noted by others, it is not really usable with a rifle in proper shoulder position while using a red dot. I was able to push the rifle out in front of me, off my shoulder and sight through the RDS, but nothing sustainable. The laser works perfectly carrying the rifle a little low on the shoulder, and looking over the top. It is surprisingly easy to shoot this way, I expected it to be more difficult and much slower.

I hadn't anticipated the single focal plane problems that come with binos until mentioned here. Even then it is difficult to comprehend fully until you are wearing them and trying to maneuver around obstacles or do something close at hand which requires fine motor skills. I've had the binos for a few days already, but I just received a monocular kit today, and going to test it out tonight. I know monocular has it's own problems but I'd like to try them both before returning one. I'm also going to bring some pistols to test with FO, Tritium and micro RDS sights, using both mono and bino.

I picked up an Insight/Eotech LAM-200HL IR Illuminator/laser. It is an older discontinued model, but BNIB old stock that was never used, and works perfectly. I couldn't find much info on the interweb, but I believe it was military issue and not civilian marketed when it was manufactured. It has IR light and laser, visible light and laser. Multiple switches and options, ATPIAL type pressure switch compatible and I have a Surefire SR-D-IT Dual Switch on route now. I'll post a photo once the switch arrives on the slow boat from Alberta.

You might wanna look into NV height red dot mounts. They're taller than 1/3 mounts to make it easier to use red dots with nods.

Additional laser off switch allows light only option in visible or IR mode. Ambidextrous momentary or locked switch on body and ATPIAL port.

Not too shabby! Some things to consider (speaking hypothetically about paper targets, obviously)

Target PID is critical in low light shooting. Under NODS, there's the potential you'll be reliant on IR light to ID your target prior to using the IR laser for assistance in aiming. What's your plan for activation of the IR light and laser simultaneously?

In the instance you need to go NODS off and use white light for PID, you'll want to have white light available instantly. What is your plan for immediate activation of white light?

Both lights are white light or IR. Both have thumb switch and tape switch. I can use both on tape switch, use thumb or forefinger and lock either on, then continue using tape for other side.

The Insight can be set to visible light only or visible laser only or both. IR light only or IR laser only or both.

Left side can be IR light, right side can be IR light and laser or IR laser only.

Something to consider later if your wanting to step up. A PVS14 Gen2+ Manual gain/Green phosphor unit runs about $2400 approx. A PVS14 Gen2+ with Photonis Echo autogated/manual gain/White phosphor tube runs about $3500 approx. Helmet/headmount cost is extra.

Thanks. I have been watching allot of YT on the different generations and advancements, I definitely want white next time.
