Night vision questions

Both lights are white light or IR. Both have thumb switch and tape switch. I can use both on tape switch, use thumb or forefinger and lock either on, then continue using tape for other side.

The Insight can be set to visible light only or visible laser only or both. IR light only or IR laser only or both.

Left side can be IR light, right side can be IR light and laser or IR laser only.

I wouldn't bother with locking either on; just make sure you have access to both visible and IR illumination immediately. It sounds like if you ran your surefire as a white light on the tape switch, and set your insight to fire both an IR illuminator and the IR laser simultaneously on the other button, you've got it made.

I have a my weapon light set on IR but keep an LD10 with a red filter on my MICH helmet for when I need visible light.

Depending on what you're doing that could work, but I think ideally you'd want a source of visible light mounted to your weapon that doesn't require to to break your grip to access it. IMO, in the perfect world that means a LAM with an illuminattor built in, and a white light; both accessible by your forward hand gripping your rifle.

Exactly, twin tape switch. One white light, other IR Illum & Laser simultaneously.

The next challenge is dark training time with live ammo, lol.

I don't even want to use my IR light on my rifle or the little one on my NOD. I prefer to be as passive as possible.

???

Anyway, night vision shooting is one big thing the NR black rifle has going for it, you don't have to rely on a range to authorize you shooting in the dark/at night.

Find some crown land, practice not only shooting, but moving, which is just as essential.

Maybe that's what the mfg called it to differentiate their non-autogated vs autogated models, or hand picked. Not all gen 3 is equal.

Could very well be, but would be false to advertise as such when AG is usually listed to differentiate between non-autogated and autogated.

According to the US DHS, some manufacturers use the term GEN 3+.

2.1.2.4 Generation 3 Image Intensifiers

Gen 3 NVDs are similar to Gen 2, except that the photocathode is composed of gallium arsenide.

This material is highly sensitive to NIR light and forms an image regardless of the degree of
illumination in the visible light spectrum by significantly amplifying the number of electrons in
the intensifier tube. In addition, the intensifier tube is coated with an ion barrier that
substantially increases the service life of the intensifier tube compared to Gen 2 tubes.

Reduced electron flow at the ion barrier may cause a loss of brightness and mild image distortion
in some Gen 3 NVDs. To counter this effect, some manufacturers have removed the ion barrier
in order to increase brightness and resolution.

A second improvement resulted from the use of an automatic gated power supply, which regulates the photocathode voltage as lighting
conditions change. Some manufacturers call this Gen 3+ or Gen 4 in their literature, but these designations have not been adopted by the military. The accepted nomenclature for this technology is “filmless and gated.”

What are you looking for Gen2+ or Gen3?? If not picky, a Pvs14 Gen2+ starts at about $2400. Has an Ekran tube and the specs are not great. $3500 gets you a PVS14 with Photonis Echo Gen2+ tube and much better specs. I have a PVS14 Photonis Echo WP/AG/MG coming Tuesday.

PVS14 Gen2+with Photonis Echo tube
Specs:
FOM 1952
SNR 29.57
RES 66
EBI .15

PVS14 Gen2+ with Ekran tube
Specs:
FOM 952
SNR 19
RES 50.1
EBI .6
