Non-Restricted Semi to hunt deer?

I have shot deer with my CZ858 and it works as well as any deer rig I have taken into the bush. Love the looks it gets too.

I think the 858 is going to be my first.. its probably the best starter for the price. I'll probably add a handgrip top rail for the EOTech..

The best starter for the price is actually the shorty M14. You can hunt anything up to and including moose with it. Just under $500

Take a good look at the MR1. A bit more expensive than your price range, and if you can get past its looks (some people can't), you can do great things with the MR1. CGN member caramel does awesome write ups on these guns.

I have been using my Swiss Arms SAPR with good success !

Thanks! Wasn't sure what was out there for this application.. I know a 223 is plenty for deer, especially a well placed shot. But I guess a bigger round would be best.

The only issue I would have with hunting deer with a .223 is the availability of appropriate bullets. There aren't many options out there other than varmint and FMJ.

I have taken my RFB and it is wonderful for packing through the bush. I've also taken deer with my m14. I've taken my Kriss Vector with me for deer with 200gr JHP handloads but I wouldn't consider taking a shot unless I was pretty close.
Any of the available non restricted black guns will do just fine provided you have an appropriate bullet and can actually hit where you are aiming.

Just keep in mind that like many things in life, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Only you know if your abilities to stalk and shoot are up to the task of making a humane kill with a firearm that will require you to get close and place a shot exactly where it needs to go.

Good luck

Not true at all. Federal makes 4 or 5 different types that are appropriate for medium deer sized game. Hornady makes a few too. These are just from two manufacturers, and what I can remember off the top of my head. There are plenty of other manufacturers that make factory .223 rounds for hunting deer. Your options more than double if you handload.

Now, if you had said that 10 years ago, I would have agreed with you.

I was told by a police officer only up to a 30 caliber is allowed

According to the Ontario hunting regs I'm reading (h ttp://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/FW/Publication/MNR_E001275P.html), the only requirement for rifle (page 22) for deer hunting is that it's centerfire.
Like Dad003 pointed out, in Quebec it's 6mm/.243 and up.
Police officers are not conservation officers, and even then, popular belief (even amongst COs) is that in Quebec you can't hunt with a magazine of more than 5 rounds, and sometimes people include the round in the chamber (so, 4 round magazines), or that you can't hunt with a laser sight.

In most areas of southern Ontario, you may not use a rifle calibre larger than .275. 30 cals may only be used for target shooting in counties where this regulation applies. Consult your hunting regulations book.
According to the regs I posted above, the under .275 restriction is only for hunting small game, not deer (or bear or moose).

Wow. Why are people so confused as to the regs? Because the are vague as crap.

Edit: I called the ministry the other day to settle an argument for hunting birds with a rifle, and they were even confused about it.
