Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

After a round of shooting CCI Blaser and how hard it is to chamber I think an oversized bolt handle is in the Eggrolls future.

Mmmmmmm...

But what style?

...

Maybe an AGW knob....add a little bit of Canadian manufacture to that eggroll lol

Mine has arrived. Out of the box it looks great.I can't really pick it up too much at this point but think it will be a winner. Now just have to wait to heal from surgery before I can start working on it. This is worse than waiting for Christmas day to come.

Father: Watching you doing your mods has been great and directions are very easy to follow. Keep up the great thread!

Thanks man!

It has been so much fun tinkering with this rifle with great payoffs.

I had a dream I cut off my bolt handle last night!

Was that a dream?..........

Tagged for interest, I've been thinking about getting a 22lr bolt action for Rimfire benchrest. I could make a nice BR stock for it, fit a scope, and have fun I think.....

Trying to keep from buying one but weakening! So the positives are , for $250. you get a Match barrel and receiver, nice bolt and a trigger group that can be made match ready with very little money and a bit of work!?!? The stock needs some relatively major work but fixable, I think I would open up the cutout for the handle and inlay a good size new piece of wood/metal initially I would be looking at a nice peep sight setup and maybe scope later on!
Is that about what you all think! I thought writing this would convince me there are better options but so far, no!
So what is the closest comparable option that is equal or better Quality/ accuracy?

Well, my reply is my personal opinion based on my own experience.

My example outshoots any CZ or Savage modern example I have ever owned or fired. It shoots as well as my brother in laws custom match barrelled rifle. As repeating rimfires it is the most accurate I have ever fired using bulk or cheapo ammo.

Others stocks do not seem to be as bad as mine was based on the pics I have seen.
I used aluminum for the bolt handle channel and it suits me fine.
The key things for me to wring out repeatable accuracy with OFFHAND shooting in mind were:
1. Bedding
2. Trigger work
3. Crown redo

Smoothing and polishing was nice and took the most time, but did little for accuracy.
I am using a $120 dollar Tasco 6x24x42 scope.
I like it and it does fine for my budget.

As there is no dovetail in the barrel or tapped holes, a peep site addition would be difficult ( but way cool) to add to this rifle.

I can not think of a finer investment of $250 for a firearm that shoots this well. Period.

BUT,

A CZ is higher quality and a Savage can be had for the same price. My last CZ (a 455) needed some free floating attention, but otherwise it was beautiful. To me a Savage is an accurate, but rough rifle. I think the NS522 is about the same machining wise. I wanted to tinker and build/polish a turd. If you are not into that then the NS522 is not for you, but good luck finding a $250 CZ!

ok I dont know if it was the windy day, or ammo, or scope or the shooting position, or what, but mine shot like crap at 50 yards on my 1st range trip

what are the conditions you guys are shooting in? I havent done any mods yet, just cleaned out the grease

Yikes!

Well, I shoot whenever I can and range conditions vary.

Did you see my offhand video? That was at 50m.

How is your crown?

I must have missed where you had it crowned not sure where around here I can get that done, was yours bad or did you just want to change the profile!

I did it myself.

It was not bad at all, but I could see after a shooting session that the muzzle residue was not even. I used a 3/8 ball bearing and valve grinding compound.

You can also use a brass round head screw/bolt and valve grinding or polishing compound to clean up a crown. Most hardware stores carry them. You want a threaded screw/bolt with a 5/16-3/8" outside diameter round head.
