Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

Yes the target crown is rare. The guy I purchased this one from has 3 more nib he's selling hoping one of those will have it and if so I will be buying another even though this one shoots sub moa.

I guess I got very lucky as my NIB SN522 I just received has a target crown ..

Well before I hurt my back last week I managed to do some tinkering , free floated the barrel , pillared both screws , cut back and squared up the safety and bolt stop area of the stock as it was binding a bit , sanded out the flaking wood stain from in side the stock and re stained it , a couple of coats of Tru Oil to harden up the finish on the stock , Bipod and scope installed , just need my back to get better so I can go shoot it ..

Here is a couple of pic's ,,,,, Hey you in the back of the room ..no laughing .... :dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Looks clean Hightrail!

I just shot a couple rounds and I must say I'm impress considering the conditions. Sitting in the grass with my harris on a rock and light wind, got a group sizing of about a toonie at 187 feet. Shooting CCI quiet with an old simmons.

Guess it will do pretty good once I get to shoot it with a good rest and some better optics. Need higher rings too, was having a hard time with the custom stock, cheek weld is great but not sitting properly at this height.

So, one of the cool things. (For me) is seeing how this thread has become more than what I wanted to do. I just wanted to mod my own rfle in my own way. To make it better I suppose.

Anyway, my favorite thing about it now is reading everyones input and suggestions. Way to go all!

This leads me to what I have been working on for the last little while. This mod has been a very long time coming. It was the very first thing I wanted to change about my rifle. That d@mn mag release lever stabbing me in my soft and supple hands when held offhand. Coming up with a design I like is another matter though. I have gone through many prototypes in search of what I have in mind. I am close to what I envisioned, but the thing is such a PITA to remove that it takes forever to remove and shape through the various shaping stages. I snapped a few pics here and there, but I will post up the finished design step by step soon. The pics here show a version made out of 6061 aluminum, but steel will be used, as the final version will be an extended 90 degree lever style.

Now,

There is a wee spring in the mag well housing that is unreal to get back in. I invented several new, never before heard curse words due to this unholy spring. It is lame factor 5 in my opinion and90% of why it takes so long to remove and check the fit. Also, the fatory lever is very machined with much file work needed, so aluminum just made sense for the trials.

I will be modding my mags to fit flush as well. One could shim the trigger guard I suppose, but that would be just silly really.
Word of caution to anyone attempting to do the same. Modding the mags will create fit issues with an aftermarket stock, so decide on what you want more.
Here is the wee jerk, the mag well and the 6061. You can sorta see ( if you zoom in) on how much machine/file work is needed to make one of these. A steel unit will take hours.

Here I am starting to shape it.

During one of many trial fits. You can see the housing is taking some wear from the trials. The housing itself is not steel for those that are interested.

So, this shows with a mag in place. It is about 1/8in shorter than the stock one. You can see in the pic the slightly shorter (in comparison) lever to the seated mag. Why not just file down the stock one you say? Well, not sure what design I wanted, but filing down the stock one would just make a lame pointy lever less pointy, but still as lame as before. There is another critical advantage for the actual mag fit as well. Making your own gives you the advantage of custom fitting the lever to the mags. My factory lever fit like a hot dog in a hallway in the groove of my mags. Just sayin'.

Thank you raqh , forgot to mention that I have polished the bolt and the inside of the receiver behind the ejection port and back towards the rear of the receiver , it was so tight that open and closing the bolt a few time started to leave
wear marks on the bolt . Now it has been all polished out the problem is gone .

I have fed a couple of mags of target ammo through it and it cycles like a champ and spits the rounds a good foot from the ejection port with no interference form the scope .

I have not tinkered with the trigger group yet ,, except to clean and oil it .

Father " That d@mn mag release lever stabbing me in my soft and supple hands when held offhand , Hmmmmmmm I guess the pictures of those hard working hands are someone else's lol.

Looking good Father !!!

There are many of us that are very happy you started this thread and that we my also add our 2 cents from time to time .

all 3 NS522 I have have the target crown....

the guy with a "rare non-target barrel" (RWWILLISIV) is probably talking about the EM332

I have to admit that the idea of cutting up my mags is a dubious proposition.

aaaaaa Yes the Humpty-Dumpty dilemma , I got the same feeling when I drilled out the stock to make the holes bigger so I could to start installing the piping to make the pillars ... at least I could refill the holes and re drill them if I made a mistake but once the metal is cut , grinded off ect ,, a little more difficult to put the metal back on , just like it was .

That said .... We all have extreme confidence in you Father , That you will do an excellent job at shortening your mags !!

I came across something interesting the other day while doing some spring cleaning , I found an old bird toy that got crewed up pretty good and was replaced but not discarded . I often take them apart and refeb they my self with wood and leather ect . This one had 3 aluminum tubes about 4 inches long , hanging from the bottom which acted like wind charms when banged together . Well I took them off and they would make nice pillars and would require a smaller hole to be drilled and leave more stock area . Here's a couple if pic showing a tub and fit with a NS522 action screw . You see these at yard sales for 50 cents or less . More extra parts for future projects .

Is anyone working on their 522s? Father, how about the mag release mod, or even the shortened mag? Let's keep this thread going!

I hear you man! I have not given up, but just been super busy.

To be honest, I was more than a little surprised at the lack of interest over that last few mods. My surprise is based on how many PMs I received in the past with inquiries about said mods.

Oh well, perhaps I should morph mine with a 10/22 and get all the kool kids here!

Naaaaa.
