Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

I have seen an EM322 in a spoter stock shoot very well. I look forward to your review.
I haven't had mine out yet but oddly enough and ugly as it is, the stock has a great cheek weld and sets me up nicely for the sights,,, with a scope I may need a bit of a riser although I usually make it work!!

It's not my martini Henry cadet by any means, but what will determine whether it's a 'keeper' or not will be how it shoots..I'm going to be interested if it can beat my JW15 or match my NS552

How does the Cadet compare to the NS522?

The one I had shot better, but only with select premium ammo. The Norinco shoots better with any ammo tho.

The Chinese knockoffs will never be collectors ,but they fill a place-functional accurate rifles at a fraction of the cost of the originals. Grouse can't tell the diference...

I just dug out my NS 522 and tried a run at the 50 yard challenge, didn't quiet make it there.

My search foo is poor could someone say Father for example start a thread on trigger mods specifically.

Scratch that i found the starter portion of it, but I think there were further mods deeper into the thread.

I tried to do the trigger mods in two sections. I built the adjustable sear and the overtravel stop in two separate steps. I have been asked in the past to start individual threads with each mod type, as not everyone wants to do all/everything that I have done.

I decided against it, for two main reasons:

1. Out of respect for all the folks that do not like the NS522 series and seem to be offended by the concept.

2. I truly believe that having one large resource of info will create a library for everyone. A one stop shop if you will.

And of course I am always available via PM for and help I can provide.

Please mod the heck out of it and post your progress!

Finally got mine out to the range today after all the mods, the groups have tightened up. Couple of older shooters came & asked what the rifle was. Let them try it out.......they seemed impressed .

I feel like part of this is due to the now 140 pages of discussion. If hotlinks were attached to the stages you've listed in the OP, members wouldn't have to dig through the entire thread to find the information they need. I've read the entire thread but couldn't begin to tell anyone where to start looking for particular bits of information.

Trigger mods I noted are P4&5, P23 and P82-83.

I have pillared and floated this, polished the trigger (~1 - 1.5 lbs) and played Rem Subsonics, Eley Practice, Eley Subsonic, Fed AutoMatch, Seller & Bellot Standard and Lapua Centre X, (prior trials with numerous other brands). Tightest most consistent groups come from Eley Practice for me. Currently have a 4.5-16x FFP Vortex on it, as I could only hold around 1/2" (3/4" actual) with a Nikon 3-9x thought I'd check out the magnification issues. Over the last few days I have run a brick of Eley and all hovers around 1/2" at 50M at 14x magnification. I have another target rifle that is typically sub 1/2" and ran it the last 3 days and it is holding sub 1/2" for me. The groups shown in the picture below are very typical, 3/4 shots in ~1/4" hole followed by a single or double flyers. I think I will redo the bedding for interest sake to see if I can get this hold in the 1/2" grouping. If nothing else this rifle has proved an interesting lesson and relatively "cheap" fun in accuracy/marksmanship.

1 square = 1/4", the wind had shifted 10mph 3 to 9 o'clock ~ this morning from yesterday.

I checked my bedding and all appeared well, but the hex m6 bolts felt a bit "sloppy" fresh hex bolts and torqued it all back together. I discovered if am willing to destroy staple removers they have a perfect fit spring as a replacement trigger spring. Paint job was stolen from someone earlier in the thread.

I am now a very happy camper having run 10 - 50M 5 shot groups, 5 of which were sub 1/2", 3 just at 1/2" and two just over 1/2" (~6/10") winds were light 5-8mph with occasional switching gusts but pretty steady from 9 o'oclock. I believe higher/better magnification would resolve this.

Excellent results!

I am pleased to hear you got your accuracy issues sorted out. The Eggroll had crooked threads cut from the factory and galled the threads worse over time. Could that be your issue, or perhaps soft action screws?

M6 40mm are the neat perfect replacement and fit/feel proper and snug in the receiver. Glad the receiver was tight. I had to trim the rear receiver screw by 0.020 in length to get a proper fit and clearance.

I don't have a brinell hardness tester nor have I tried a file but I think soft metal in the OEM's is the likely culprit. Bad threads run in once let alone a few times, usually leaves behind damage on removal, there appears no evidence of this. I am guessing that the receiver would have been better quality material and treatment. If this prompted guess is right it may afflict other rifles. Good thinking on your part.

Well found a little time yesterday to "mod" my NS a bit.
I had previously done the trigger mod that Father was so gracious to share with all of us and got my trigger down to around 1 1/2 pounds with an overtravel stop and it worked nice. But I'm one of those guys who can't leave things alone.

I read a write up Don Stith had done on installing a 5071 Anschutz trigger in an NS 522. Looked pretty straight forward so yesterday I decided to go ahead and install the Anschutz 5071 trigger I purchased a while ago from a fellow member. The receiver needed to be opened up for the ears sticking up on the top of the trigger.Hole size is around 1/2-5/8". I used rotary files I purchased from Princess Auto in my Dremel. Man they worked slick. Nice smooth fast cutting. Once I had it oped enough I had to flat file the receiver where the trigger would sit. This new trigger is about 3/4" longer. I used the stock front screw hole with a 6mm x 14 mm bolt and redrilled a new hole at the rear for a 6-32 screw. Only other thing I had to do was file down between the two lower bolt guides to the height of the main part of the bolt body so the sear didn't catch on the bolt. Did a bump test and it will not go off unless the trigger is pulled. Not sure how light it is because my trigger gauge only goes down to 8 oz. If I had to guess I would say it's less than 6 oz because my trigger gauge barely moves and it goes off with no creep.
Next project is building a new stock or finding a 64/54 match stock to modify. If anyone knows where to find one???The new trigger sticks down past the bottom of the factory stock. Should be able to get it finished over another weekend. Can't wait for warmer weather to start testing ammo.

Scott....

WHOA!!!!

This is epic man. Thank you for sharing this mod with us and you receive my internet hi five gold star award for coolest mod. I had priced out an Anshutz stock long ago, but the price ended up scaring me off. I watched the EE for awhile, but I gave up.

Cant wait to see round 2.
