Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

I find it is in adjusting the claws to get the orientation that is correct. There are batches that work great out of the box... and a bunch that suck. Some will need stronger springs. Some will need adjustments in claw dimensions. It is fiddly but so far, it can be corrected and brought to a proper operation.

These are certainly the best kept secret in the rimfire world... but they definitely are a hands on TLC type of project. Always smoothing and polishing. Haven't met a trigger that didn't need work. Changing the bolt knobs with the Scorpio... fitting the scope base. Adjusting the ejection.

Many will shy away from anything that needs files, and home DIY machine work. And if you want someone to set it up, the labour costs (if someone would take on the job) reduces the value.

But... great shooters can lie underneath.

The hands on nature of these guns is one of the big draws for me, because I can play with it and learn without worrying about damaging an expensive gun. Plus, there's definitely a fair bit of satisfaction that comes from out shooting guys with rifles that cost orders of magnitude more than mine. One of the guys I shot the last match with had apparently spent around $10k on his Vudoo and Nightforce scope. Don't get me wrong, it was a really nice setup, but I had lots of fun and outshot him on 2 or 3 stages for the day, and he had been taking rimfire PRS fairly seriously for several years now. It's also fun seeing the look of confusion on someone's face when they have no idea what gun they're looking at because it isn't a big name brand.

I run a Scorpio as my rimfire bolt PRS rifle because it IS better then most other options.... as long as you are willing to work through the QC issues and tune what is there.

I have played with 8 now and they have all shot well. The 8th will be my 2nd one tested with a tuner.... when it warms up. the first one with a tuner has blown me away by how well it has shot.

I think we will have 4 with tuners this season and we are going to compare how they shoot at distance.

The functioning issues can be addressed... the cycling is fantastic for a bolt rifle. Triggers are very good for a std pull weight range (I don't like super light triggers for PRS games). Steel mags that work very well... and you dont need to do a bunch of hokie pokie to load them

Diamond in the rough

Here's what mine looks like now. Made a few changes to the stock to make it a bit nicer to hold and stippled the grip area. I wish I'd been a bit more careful when making the stock and avoided the couple knots that I have in it, but I can't change that now. I'm not convinced I like the aluminum butt plate either, so I think I'll probably get a rubber one eventually.
I put an Athlon Helos on it with Burris XTR Signature rings rather than buying an angled scope rail. I finished my modified universal dovetail to Picatinny rail, then painted it with VHT caliper paint and baked it on. I added a 3D printed dope card holder so I don't need masking tape on my arm when shooting a PRS match with it. I had issues with the scope mount sliding in the dovetail grooves, so I made sure that won't happen again by drilling a divot in the top of the action and grinding a set screw to the same angle. I wasn't sure I wanted to do that, but having the rail move around is no good.

I went to the range to get it sighted in and chronograph some ammo today, have another match next Sunday. I'm going to try using the SK Flatnose that shot really good before. It was way too windy for trying to shoot tiny groups today, but I tried a couple at 100m anyway to see how it would go. Even with the wind I was able to make a few steel hits out to 300m today, and the predictions Strelok gave me seemed pretty good. The ES of the SK Flatnose wasn't really much better than CCI standard though, 46fps with 20 rounds over the chronograph. The highest and lowest velocities were the first two shots of the string though, and I'm not sure if that means anything.

I have a Scorpio that I picked up earlier this year, but not shot much. When I have taken it out, it has surprised me each and every time at the range with how nice it is to shoot. It cycles very nicely, feels very solid, the mags are well made and help with flawless feeding, the trigger is excellent as it came, and even the oddball stock is very comfortable. It is truly a pleasure to shoot.
Was at the range on a very rainy day recently, and when my targets finally dried out, it seems that the little knock off just loves SK STD+. I have done absolutely nothing to this rifle other than the silicon bolt knob trick...no bedding, no trigger work, nothing. I can't link the pic right now (over my MB limit it seems) of the 5 5-shot groups with SK STD at 50 yds, 3 are 1/2", 2 are 5/8". What more can you ask for with a $200 rifle?

I'm still tinkering with mine, in between trying to learn to shoot better. I just finished making the cheek piece adjustable for height, seeing how my new scope and taller rings meant it was no longer high enough. The pillars are just a pair of stainless 3/8" bolts with the heads cut off, and I'll eventuall get some knobs for the lock bolts so I don't need to keep a 7/16" wrench in my range bag. I also made a bigger bolt knob and threaded it on.

I'm still trying to shoot some rimfire PRS matches, so on Sunday I did a training day put on by one of the guys that also teaches Mapleseed events. He was eyeing up my rifle in the morning and wanted all the details. He recognized the action when he had a closer look, but not the stock. I was able to manage some personal bests through the day, including 5 shots at 100m into about an inch, and 5 shots at 200m into about 2.5", prone using CCI standard. I really need to work on building a stable position when shooting from barricades and stuff, but I don't think my rifle is holding me back.

I had the range all to myself today and also had my camera bag in the car, so I figured I'd take some nice pictures while I was there. Also tried a couple videos through a telephoto lens.

The big target was at 550 yards, and the plate rack is 280.

550yds... OUTSTANDING...

2" at 280yds is not bad either :)

Jerry

PS.. what ammo were you using?

Thanks Jerry. I was shooting the same CCI standard as at the match we shot. I played with the SK rifle match I got from you a bit too, and it definitely seems to hold together a bit tighter at longer ranges. Flatter shooting too. The 280 smallest target was 3", not 2", but I still thought it was pretty good. I was experimenting with the multi BC option in strelok pro today, trying to see if I could get the calculated value to match more closely what my rifle and ammo does in the real world. It seems much better than it was, but the real test will be Sunday.

EM332 wanted to see what it was like 2 stage to single stage trigger a five minute mod little vee for the spring to sit in and a bit of a radius
And works great
Won’t let me upload photo oh dear never mind, just turn the 2 stage actuator over. hope that makes sense. Over travel screw fitted
And all works a treat. photos on NZ site.

I've been using my rifle for rimfire PRS matches, so I bought some 10 round mags for the EM332 Scorpio. They work good, but turns out there's a lot of 12 round stages. So I designed my own +2 magazine base, and 3D printed it. It works with the original spring and everything, and feeds great. I tested the prototype at the range yesterday, but it didn't have any way to keep it in place on the magazine, so I added a boss for an M3 screw, now I'm golden.

I'm still playing with my Norinco, and shooting PRS matches with it. I've had an occasional fail to feed during matches, and wasn't able to make it happen during practice. I thought it was because I had lint or dirt in my magazines, so I was taking them apart to clean before matches, and it seemed better, but I was shooting a bit today with my daughter, and she made it happen while I was watching the rifle. Turns out the nub in the action that sits at the back of the magazine between the feed lips was just able to catch the rim of the next case coming up sometimes, so I took the rifle apart when we got home and filed it down just a tiny bit. Should be much better now.

I've also added a pound of weight to the forend to get it to balance better on a tripod or barricade. I'm shooting my first hunter style match tomorrow, and was told we would probably mostly be shooting from a tripod, so I figured some practice with the tripod wouldn't hurt either.

I kind of feel like a moron not catching it sooner, but it's only been a very occasional problem. As soon as I saw the shell hang up when she was shooting, it was pretty obvious though. I put an Anschutz rail in the forend so I can use the Mpod without the arca rail and keep the rifle a bit cleaner and lighter too, and had to narrow the forend a bit to get it to fit, it was a hair over 3" wide. I haven't shot it from the Mpod yet, but it sure feels sturdy compared to my knockoff Harris. The arca rail comes off just by loosening 4 screws with t-nuts.
