Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

Good to hear camaroguy, let us know how it goes. And congrats on the kid, they have a way of making other projects seem less important. I meant to do this a few years ago when I bought the rifle, just getting around to it now.

Good news, I managed to not glue the action into the stock. Not sure when I'll have time to do more work on it, but I'll post it here when I do. Got my 10 round EM332 mags too, they'll need a bit of Dremel work to make them work. Need a bit more clearance at the front of the mag for the bolt to close.
Kristian

Anytime you are bedding a stock and manage to not glue in any part of the action in the stock is a success in my book.

Nice work man and let me say I’m glad to see guys are still posting in this thread. I never would have guessed that this thread would have grown to what it is when I started it years ago. Pretty dang cool...

Glad you're still around too, Father. I plan to use your posts as guidance for modifying my trigger after I get there stock made.

Cut out a couple blanks today, not sure where to go from there except to remove everything that doesn't look like a stock. Kind of intimidated to be honest.

I cut mine roughly to shape, then inletted and glass bedded it, next is time to shape it into something that hopefully resembles a half decent rifle stock. I have no idea if I'm going about it in the right way, this is the first time I've tried this. I think my next step will be to cut it close to the final outline with the band saw, then add width to the forend for the beavertail. After I guess I'll start carving away anything that doesn't look like a rifle stock.

Well that makes me feel better because that was roughly the order of operations I was thinking of using. I rough cut most of the excess with a circular saw, then went after it with a handheld planer. I'll be searching my shed for something to use to make a barrel channel, then inlet for the action. Likely with various sized drills and a lot of filing. I'm not a wood worker so my tool selection is limited. My blank is just over 2.75" wide so I'm thinking I won't have to add anything for thickness on the front end, I'd like to keep total weight including scope under what my 700 weighs so I can still carry it for grouse season.

When I was planning on doing a custom stock back in the day, I had played around with a router bit in my drill press with a jig to be able to slide the stock in order to keep it straight. It worked great in the little of time I invested in it. It was easy to find the right bit for the barrel channel and even though the drill press spins far slower than an actual router I found if the bit was new it worked well.

I've never had much luck using a drill press as a router, but every one I've tried used a Morse taper to hold the chuck in the spindle. As soon as I'd start putting side pressure on it, it would work its way loose and eventually spit the chuck out. I got a bit more done on this one today, and I think most of the easy stuff is done now. I'm not quite happy with my bedding job though, the action can rock a bit in the stock. I may just add some JB weld putty at the back of the action to stop that, rather than stripping it all and starting over. Finally cut the buttstock roughly to shape, and now it's going to be a pile of carving to get something that's a bit nicer to hold onto than a square chunk of lumber.

My bottom metal is going to be a tiny bit proud of the stock I guess, oh well.

And here's the big difference between the 5 round mags that came with the gun and the EM332 10 round ones I bought. Nothing I can't take care of with a Dremel or a small file. They were also a tiny bit longer front to back and were really tight in the magwell. Just a little bit of polishing with some emery cloth took care of that.

Getting there, I got a good chunk of the butt and grip area rough shaped today. Takes a long time with mostly hand tools. I used my little bandsaw, router table, belt sander, a half round wood rasp, and a half round bastard file to get this far. Feels pretty decent when shouldering it so far though. Once I finish shaping the stock there's going to be a pile of sanding, I'm not really looking forward to that part.

I bought some $22 Scorpio mags for mt 522.

They are the 2 outside mags in this picture:

See the little weld mark at the top of the back? This is the area that makes the mag a too tight fit. All I have to do to make the mags work perfectly is polish this area smooth.

I had to open up the front notch a bit on mine too, the bolt wouldn't close the way they came. Going out on a limb and going to guess that quality control on the mags is not quite as good as the rest of the gun.

Thanks Father. The pistol grip was a bit fat yet, so I slimmed it down some and did a bit more shaping on the buttstock. I got everything to where I was fairly happy with the shape yesterday, so I spent the rest of the day sanding and making a buttplate from some 3/16" aluminum. I may change that to steel later, we'll see. No pictures yet, it was pretty late last night by the time I was done, and now I'm waiting on the boiled linseed oil to dry before reassembling the rifle. I think it turned out ok for a first time building a stock though

Here's the finished product, with 2 coats of boiled linseed oil.

I haven't shot it yet, but it feels good when I shoulder it free hand or from a bench. My bathroom scale says the complete rifle is 10.2 lbs, feels a bit heavier than that though. The cheek piece ended up on just the right spot, and the rifle balances at the magazine. I think I'll let the finish dry a couple days before I shoot it, my hands stink just from taking it outside for the pictures.
Kristian

Thanks Jerry, I'm looking forward to shooting it off a bench. Have to try to do some load development for another rifle, and I've got an old Swede Mauser 6.5 to test fire. Should be a good time.
