Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

We are really enjoying the Scorpios (one more in the group but no pics)... lots of TLC but are now running very nicely and proven very accurate at distance

Hopefully, there will be matches this season... if not, they are ready for next year.

The EM332 thread almost made me buy one, but I figured I may as well finish what I started with the NS522 instead. I really like what you're doing with them, pretty cool that such a cheap rifle can be made to shoot as good as it does.
Kristian

The Scorpio's/NS522's have a superb lineage and top tier engineering. They are just made to a very low price point and QC is horrid... but materials are surprisingly good

If you are willing to work through each issue, you can bring out all their goodness.. that is very Euro Chic... and would be VERY expensive.

Got another rifle coming out... may as well get them while they are around for next to nothing.

My bedding didn't turn out great, apparently Vaseline doesn't make a very good mold release, and some of the epoxy pulled out. Better than glueing the action into the stock though. Before I did the bedding I epoxied in some pillars made from 3/8" stainless steel tubing. I made them long enough that the bottom metal is flush with the stock and the mag and mage release don't stick out near as much anymore either.

I'll shoot it how it is and see how things go, I'd still like to try making my own stock someday anyways. Maybe I'll laminate some birch I've got here into a blank and see what I can whittle out of it.
Kristian

I cut out and glued together some pieces of birch today to have a go at a stock. Three layers, just a touch over 3/4" thick, and I'm thinking I'll add another piece on each side of the forend and make it about 3" wide. Going to try to pattern it after my Swedish CG80 stock. As you can see, I subscribe to the theory that there's no such thing as too many clamps when gluing. I used Titebond 2 and a small foam brush to spread the glue evenly. Ignore the messy workbench.

Can you link some info on the scope base you are using?

Jerry

The scope mount I've got is this one, https://www.amazon.ca/UniqueFire-Picatinny-Extension-Conversion-D0026-C/dp/B07DNYNT61
Just a cheapy from amazon that I modified to fit.
I lied, it's my CG3000 I'm sort of following the stock design of. The bottom of the forend is more parallel to the bore on this one. Got the top of the blank squared up on the jointer, trimmed it up a bit around the pistol grip area, and cut the forend to around 2.25" square, then inlet the bottom metal and drilled the holes for the action screws. I'll cut the heads off some 6mm bolts so I can drop the action over the holes and figure out the rest of the inletting. I cut out the center layer of wood on about a 10° or so angle so that the grain runs slightly different, hopefully that makes it a bit stronger in the pistol grip area.

Rule #1 with power tools, if you're tired, stop. I didn't cut myself, but had a slip up while touching up the inletting in my new stock, and cut a huge chunk out beside the action. I guess I'll be filling that in when I do the glass bedding, sucks that it will be very obvious unless I decide to paint the stock. I didn't take any pictures of the inletting, some of it looks like it was done by a drunk beaver. Got a bit more work on the barrel channel to get it free floated, then I can epoxy in some pillars and bed the action before going to town on the outside of the stock.

Cut the other side to be identical, maybe you need a drink to be as drunk as a beaver.

I sort of followed your suggestion Jerry, but instead of inletting darker wood, I cut a piece from the same board I cut the blank from. Should be pretty much invisible once it's finished.
Kristian

I put a couple pillars in and am waiting for the epoxy to cure, then I can try bedding the action. I've got JB weld and shoe polish on hand, so I might give that a go. Hopefully I don't manage to glue the rifle into the stock.

Got some time to do the bedding today. Two coats of shoe polish like you said, then into the stock and wrap with surgical tubing. Hopefully it comes out, should be able to try tonight I guess. I cut down some long 6mm bolts to use as action screws so everything stays lined up.

Good news, I managed to not glue the action into the stock. Not sure when I'll have time to do more work on it, but I'll post it here when I do. Got my 10 round EM332 mags too, they'll need a bit of Dremel work to make them work. Need a bit more clearance at the front of the mag for the bolt to close.
Kristian

turbo_bird, your stock project has inspired me to get back onto mine. I glued together three pieces of birch plywood 16 months ago, my son was born shortly after and the chunk of plywood has sat there ever since. I originally decided to make one because the original started cracking around the action on both sides. I'll be patterning mine off my 700 long range. Then to convince my wife that I need matching scopes.
