I would also appreciate clarification on hoe you cleaned up the crown with the threaded screw / bolt. Thanks
You put the brass screw in a drill. I usually cut off as much as I need to to get the head of the screw in close to the chuck(easier to control). This eliminates a lot of the thread. You then coat the head of the screw with 600-800 grit valve grinding compound. Clamp the barrel to a solid surface(I use my vise with a rag wrapped around the barrel). Now you spin the brass screw on the end of the barrel while also moving the drill around so you don't wear a groove in one spot. It doesn't take a lot to do the job. Spin for 30 seconds and wipe of the compound and have a look.If it it looks even your done if not apply more compound and give it another 30 second spin. Keep an eye on your screw that it doesn't wear in a groove. If it does grab another screw and reapply the compound. PS: Buy a few screws as 1 doesn't always do the job.
Here is a video by Larry Potterfield showing the process. He starts the screw lapping around the 1:20 mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OorpZlG28fI
Hope this helps.
