I just realized, the rifle will come with 2x 5/30 mags. I thought it would come with just one. That's kinda nice.

How high should a cheek rest be above the stock to suit most people using optics?

That kinda hard to say. The cheek weld with my micro is better than it was with the optics on my VZ 58 or CQ 311. The cheek weld with my micro is just fine. Any higher, maybe 1/2 inch cheek rest would be useful?? You have to be careful because people will still want to use their irons if they need to and I find that the irons are very low on the T97. The carry handle is lower to the bore it seems than the carry handle on my CQ 311...but it's been a while since I've owned that one (kicking myself for selling it).

Clobb- I have an idea for my 97 when I get it. I might bubba it a bit. I might remove the charging handle from the top, and relocate it to the side. I would then cut the the carrying handle off, bolt a rail on.

Since you have one, is this a possibility, looking at the internals?

Was thinking the same thing, once I get mine I will definetly look at that option.

Well if there is a will there's a way I suppose. You could do it, but do you really need to? More on that later...

Here's a pic of the rail tower/rear sight:

Here's a closer pic of the charging handle:

Here's a pic of the rifle mostly disassembled (I didn't take the rail guard off because my optic and flashlight were mounted to it). Note the charging handle/bolt carrier to the right of the pic.

Now, you could take the plastic charging handle off and drill and tap your own charging handle to the side - you might have to cut the plastic a bit though, I'm not sure. You could also hack off the proprietary rail tower and find some way of mounting a picatinny rail lower over the bore. By the way, Dr. Lector has hinted in his other posts that he has already done something like this, although I'm not sure if he altered the charging handle. You would have to devise some way to attach or weld a rail to the lower part of tower or receiver. You would lose the use of your iron sights...

Now the question is? Do you need to do these mods? Sure it would be cool, but like I've posted in the past the sights on the T97 sit quite low, for me anyway. If you use the rail supplied by CanAm, or mine, and use a lower mounted optic you will have no problems with cheek weld. An Aimpoint micro (or the many clones available on Ebay), a doctor optic (or one of the many clones on ebay) would work fine. Even one of the fake points with a low ring would work fine. Smaller magnified optics and low cantilever bases will work as well.

I'd stay away from Eotech or some of the popular reflex sights because they ad a bunch of height.

Now, regarding the charging handle, I really like it. It's totally ambidextrous, you can operate it with one finger and it is totally out of the way so it won't snag on clothing. Moving the handle to the side defeats it's intended purpose.

All that being said, a side charging handle and a lower scope mount would be a mod I'd be interested in seeing:D. I'd also like to see someone put a heavy barrel on one of these:dancingbanana:.

I would like to relocate the charging handle, install a rail at the proper height to have a flip up buis co witnesses with my eotech, those are my plans

I have long had plans of cutting off the carry handle and install a rail as well. I am thinking about simply attaching a small knob to the side of the charger handle, and then maybe cut it down in height. I want to use an Eotech/4x magnifier setup, so I definitely could benefit from the lower rail. I suppose I shouldn't mention my plans to later convert mine to 6.8 SPC for deer . . .

Good idea on the charging handle. I was going mill a slot on the left side of the receiver, and have the charging handle come through there.

Yeah, I would think it would be a simple thing to drill and tap a hole into the charger handle from the side, and mount a small knob/knurled barrel onto it, and then trim it down. I also had an idea to remove the carry handle, and then make another one that goes from the rear carry handle turret all the way to the front sight mount, a la the Famas. Hmmmmm . . .
