Norinco Type 97 FAQ (small update 01/04/09)

I put deposit for type97, but was never charged. Does that mean they might be sold out, or just never got around to it because they are very busy? I see they sell CLP, perhaps I should add this to my order.

I'm in the same position. I assume they're extremely busy what with shipping Outlaws and such . Did you check your order status on their website?

Yes, it said "Queued". I think that means I'm very far down the line!! I knew I was a late coming, but I thought for sure they would take the deposit.
I hope they contact me first anyway, I think I need to add some other things, damn they've got good stuff. Cheers

I hope the rifle get to us purchasers soon as I am afraid of the antigun sympathies that may be stirred up by the release of the film about the Montreal Polytechnique massacre.

Ouch. I just want my Norinco 97A. I don't want to hurt anyone or anything, just have some fun at the range. What is wrong with those people?

I got the "queued" message too so I emailed Can Am with a message requesting a real time status report. Nice polite request, no demands, just want to know what's going on.

I received no answer whatsoever.

Take this as IMHO. I was wrong before.
If somebody has a different opinion,
I will not start a pissing contest over this.

I am aware of what a lot of people said about the barrel,
but from what I’ve seen, the Chinese are making
reasonably good chrome-lined barrels.

I know that some people may want to argue that statistically,
the barrels with a fast twist do not last as long
as barrels with a slower twist (theoretically I kinda agree, but...)

However, generally speaking, if you don’t do stupid things with it,
the barrel is supposed to last long time, way over 6k rounds.

The receiver is the one that wears out first,
making it the weakest link in the Type 97.

I said that the receiver appears to be the weakest link
(in any design, some component has to be the first to fail).
But I do not necessarily consider the receiver to be straight garbage.

This is what I meant when I said that receiver is the weakest link.

The rails of Type 97 are aluminum, machined into the receiver.
They are used to guide the bolt carrier and the striker.
Also, the bolt uses the left rail
for alignment and indexing during cycling.
All these are made of steel but the rails are aluminum.

Sure, some may argue
that there are semi auto aluminum receivers out there
that withstand a large amount of rounds without wearing out,
which is true.
However, receivers like, say, 10/22 or Ar15 upper
use a different design to guide the bolt or bolt carrier
and most important they have no rails.
Well, Type 97 has.

Regarding how long the T97 receiver may last,
I’m not going to bite that question :)

Bolt carrier, main recoil spring, bolt, striker.

These are brand new receivers, never fired.

Wow, thank you for your detailed answers. They put a lid on my curiosity. I was thinking about ordering one but now I think I may hold back for a while to see what people say and how the rails last.

I still don't understand how you put 20 thousands round through it without wear in the rails. Or if wear was present how come it didn't affect accuracy? That is what I got from your posts elsewhere. I think there is a little conflict between these things.

Wouldn't wear on the rails only affect function? As long as the bolt locks up solid, rail wear shouldn't affect accuracy....or am I off base? I guess if the bolt indexes off the rail I guess it could affect accuracy.....Lector??

P.S. Here's a current pic of Lector and his buddy Deckard - I'll let you guess which one is which..:D

I am sure a little grease would be in order. It works on every other mechanical device built by man i am sure it would work in this situation.

clobb make us a video i cant read chinese or deckard or some body, i am pulling my hair out waiting and dont have much left for feild stripping and cleaning. :)
you did a pretty good job on the first try but likyou said clobb some of the pics suck. oh well beggars and chosers eh.
thanks in advance if you do. WHATS ALL THAT BACK LASH STUFF BUDDY WAS SHOWING IS THAT VERY IMPORTANT?

I'm too busy for new video's right now - but there is a crappy little video here.

I'm not sure what you mean by back lash??

This thread has been a really interesting read... along with the other ones associated with the T97. So much so that I decided to order one from Chris. I'm a bit of a fan of the "eclectic", so the T97 will look nice hanging in the back window of my Pontiac Aztek...

With respect to the alloy rails, and the wear caused by the bolt carrier and striker assembly... I agree that grease would be the preferred lubricant for that area (I'm especially fond of the "gold" Glock paste...). But another thing I'll look at will be to "smooth" out the mating surfaces, where the Steel meets the Alloy... Not to change the tolerance, but to correct any of the "less finished" finish if you know what I mean...

I look forward to receiving the new toy... let the tinkering begin!
