Norinco Type 97 FAQ (small update 01/04/09)

Was reading some informative stuff about the diff between 5.56 and .223 .
According to Wiki you can shoot a .223 cartridge in a 5.56 bore, but not a 5.56 cartridge in a .223 bore.(well it wasn't reccomended anyway and could be dangerous, something to do with the size of the throat on the shell) You guys prob know all this but i'm just trying not to chew my fingers off waiting for my rifle.
I know I ordered late and you would hope that there inventory is counted as they sell them so as not to sell more than they have, that's my only worry. Boy I would be pissed!

Damn it anyway. Is the Norinco Type 97A chambered for the NATO 5.56 x 45 round or the .223 caliber? The 5.56 rounds are expensive, at least where I have looked. Anyone know for sure about how the 97A is chambered?

According to Lever, who currently has the Type 97A in stock, the chamber is .223 remington. According to CanAm who has the Type 97, the chamber is 5.56 NATO.
It is a minor detail, and won't be an issue...if you want to know more check out the black gun forum where this has been beaten to death over the AR chambering.

The manual says 5.56...

CanAm & Customs

Just got off the phone with CanAm. I had a small billing error to fix . Any way they were very helpfull and will take care of it right away. While I had Mark on the phone I had to ask him about the Customs hold. He stated that allthough the Type 97 shipment did arrive Jan 26 ,Customs did not get them immediately. His best guess was sometime next week the 30 days will be up and they will be released. P.S. While I was typing this post Mark phoned me and said the error was all fixed. That's good customer service !

Great info Rob, it saves a million people from calling them with the same question.;)

I'll say. Man alive what is it with the customs people? I suppose it will be weeks before Canada Ammo will be ready to ship out our rifles. They will have to mount the rail on the handles, transfer registration to each owner etc. Oh. well, it just snowed again here in sunny Alberta. Anyone know where a person can buy bulk 5.56 x 45 ammo? I think it may be rare but it would be great to feel the extra punch from the military round. IMHO

I doubt CanAm will mount the rails - it would just take more time. It's very easy to do on your own.

LOL. That's exactly what I was thinking. Why the heck would CanAm take the time to mount the rails for us?? It's just a bonus for a pre order. You don't even have to mount it if you just want to use the iron sights. If you do have optics you want to use, I'm sure that it would take you all of 2 minutes tops to put it on yourself.

Actually, I hope you guys are right. Might get our rifles a bit faster. The only rail I have mounted on a firearm is on my Mini 14 and that made use of a bolt inside a cover plate. Works well though. That took about 5 minutes I guess.
