Norinco Type 97 FAQ (small update 01/04/09)

Lector, do you know if the T97 receiver is made out of forged aluminum? Or is it machined from solid billet? (I think you know why I'm asking).;)

Cheers

I think I have an answer. There is a slightly visible "seam" line down the center of the bottom of the receiver. I think this would indicate a forging. The CNC guy I'm using to make my mount also believes it's a forging - edit - from the photos I've shown him.

The rifle has gone through many evolutions and there might be more.

I didn't see the original question.
Yes, that's correct, it is forged
(I don't remember seeing military guns with billet or cast receivers).

But no, I don't know why you are asking.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be cryptic. I wanted to know if it was forged due to the receiver rails. I didn't think that the receiver would be cast but I thought perhaps it could be machined from solid billet:redface:. Forged aluminum is generally considered to be stronger than machined billet (or so I've read). I was hoping it was forged for this reason.

For an aluminum receiver, it is made by all the right processes: 7000 series equivalent, forged...the only thing I'm not sure of is the annodizng, as this can affect the strength of the final product as well.

I've inspected my receiver for wear marks and all I've seen so far is some mild wear on the leading edge of the left rail. I'll now insure I lube the rails along their total length and particularly at their leading edge.

Hey Guys, what optics would work good on the Type 97? I plan on using the rail that will be provided with the gun from CanadaAmmo...

The rifle will be used for coyotes, groundhogs and range time, so I'm unsure what compromise on optics would be best... 3-9x40 (boring but functional), 2.5-10x40 (boring but maybe a little better), 4-12x40 (more interesting)... How about some of the military scopes used by our forces?

I did look at the chinese scope that Lever Arms has, it is 3 power and has very very fine reticle markings... So much so, that you have to "look" for the markings and they don't stand out enough IMHO. Plus, I think more magnification is needed for the role the rifle will be filling.

Cheers & Thanks
Jay

For what you are going to use it for a 3-9 or 4 -10 should work just fine.
Just make sure you get the lowest height mounts possible. Also, because the sight line is so high above the bore please be sure to limit the cant of your rifle or you'll be all over the map. You have to remember that this is a military rifle and though capable of good accuracy won't be a tack driver.

I think something like an S&B short dot or Burris XTR would be perfect for the rifle, though it might look a little odd.

How can you guys have it!!!

I very much admire you guys who possess a type-97 on hand... After I got some nice advices from Mr. Clobbersauras back in June 2008, I placed an order on in July from the following page:

http://canadaammo.com/product.php?productid=25&cat=0&page=1

And after that... no status update at all.... I called the 1.866 number, no response. I email to mark@canadaammo.com, no response.... And no one charges me $100 deposit... :(

So... any similar situation here? Or maybe I should start looking for other resources to get this nice but cheap rifle... Thanks a lot...

Wow donny that's weird. I got my t97 months ago as did everyone else. They must have forgot about you.

Just kidding. No one has received their 97s from canam because they're not in Canada yet! Relax they will come!

I did recieve an email yesterday saying it would be shipped: "it will ship out in the next day or so".

This could just be a mistake, because I didn't refer to the gun directly in my email (though I did specifically ask if they were actually shipping the item).

From what I've seen on few 97's,
rails wear out but they don't seem to crack.
When they start to wear,
you will probably notice it when cleaning it.
They seem to have some preferential spots
where they wear more.
Cleaning and lubbing may slow down the wearing.

Here's some pics of the wear on my rails. I have 600 - 800 rounds through the rifle and as far as I can tell the wear is only to the finish. I can't find any evidence that the metal has been worn down in any way, though if it is wearing through the finish I guess it is wearing the aluminum as well. I'm not worried about the durability. To be honest I saw more wear marks on my browning Hi power and Norc 1911....

question from the pics ( log version). Is the flash hider threaded on? if so is it 1/2 28" ie can the flash hider be replaced by a standard north american comp threaded on or are the threads different?

thanks

I'm not sure about the long one. Perhaps RobAK or Lector will chime in on this one.....

I'm not familiar with how to remove the FH. There are no flat sides like the AR's to allow eay use of a wrench. There are 2 small indents on the bottom though. There is also a ring around the contour immediately beside the 2 indents in the FH.
Here's a close up pic, and maybe Lector can fill in the info:
