nuisance bear and light birdshot

Many years ago I harvested a bear that some Ahole had shot with bird shot. There was numerous pellets just under the hide that had long since healed over. That animal had lived a life of pain due to someones ignorance. Please don't use bird shot.

Phil Shoemaker wrote that they used to move bears away from their homestead using #9 shot. Said that for years they found shot under the hides of client-shot bears. That would be enough to motivate me to stop using it.

I wouldn't screw around with anything other than a permanent solution. This bear is habituated to your place and all other solutions have a much larger margin of error. Kill it...

Draft a law making bears eating bird seed illegal. That should take care of the problem.
Your Govt.

Lol na I think he should put out an official bulletin seems like a faster more effective work around to communicate a threat to consequences to a non existent law that they will enforce no ? He should also make sure it's just posted on a website or two so no person or bear knows if it's a real law or strongly worded suggestion. This should confuse the bear into giving up surely.

Try rock salt!!! ... the bigger the chunks the better !!!!And if you get him/it in the arse he'll Jump and run... funny as hell to see and laught for days
And !!!
Build a potato launcher ....build a double barrel ..... you wanna hear a bear scream !!!!!
The most you'll do is give it a bad bruise ... aim for the arse ... he won't be able to sit comfortably for a couple of days ... he'll remember not to go back
Just saying
Please video tape it for laughter
And use an electric fence.....
lay it on the ground when it comes around plug it in ...... seen this one in Italy when dogs and cats pissing where they aren't suppose to
Ah god I laughed for days !!!!

The solution is the shotgun lamp.

The bear attack happens.

Your buddy helps you and you manage to grab the shotgun lamp.

You aim.

And squeeze the trigger.

The bear suffers minimum damage to the arse and takes off.

Lol at the above, that's a classic
As far as the bear goes I would give the fish and wildlife a call and report a problem bear. I do believe they will come out and trap it
I wouldn't kill it or wound it if possible

Yes F&W will trap it. It is their problem because once a problem bear always a problem. They will do exactly what most of the responders have suggested.IMO this bear will get bolder and search out signs of human activity for more food.

Buy a electric fencer and wire at nose height around yard and if bird feeder has any metal around it put wire to it!

Once they have learned to source domestic supply of grub, they are already too far gone.

At least here, anyway. Had a nuisance bear. Called F&W. We wanted the bear saved and relocated. Their advice - dispatch the bear, as it would be their intention to do the same, but just say it was relocated. There is no choice, once they have found domestic food sources.

There is a nice new bear rug at our place, now.

Your choice is either do it, or call F&W to do it. Only a matter of time, until a bad story becomes of this bear, otherwise.

I had an uncle that liked to torture animals, he finally went to jail for beating the snot out of my aunt, been doing it for years.

Have to agree with the above posts (except the double barrel potatoes gun one WTF) The bear is pretty much dead already, F&W will probably trap it then haul it somewhere and put it down. I'd let them do their job.

Depending on what province you're in and the location in that province your Fish and Wildlife people may not be of much help. However, they may be quite willing to charge you with shooting game out of season, without a licence, in a no shooting area, etc. The bear is habituated to finding food in your yard, the best you can hope for is to discourage him from looking for it in your yard but he will also be checking your neighbours, the problem won't go away as long as this bear is nearby. I have had moderate success in keeping them out of my garden and apple trees by spreading mothballs around. Works great to keep moose, deer, dogs and cats out of the garden too. The very best non lethal deterrent I found on bears was to hammer a bunch of 3-4" nails through pieces of plywood and place around the attractant area, pointy side up. Very effective. Guns are a final solution of course, but check the legalities beforehand. If legal, do the job permanently, don't try scaring tactics, that's for slingshots and low powered airguns and usuually unsuccessful. Good luck.

Well if wired to 220 and 16000 volts as you say they will learn and avoid which means think about what you wrote!
