The only one i HATE is the 270 WIN because every GOOF :stirthepot2: who has one thinks its the BEST cartridge there is ! :onCrack: LOL RJ

The 270 may not be the best out there, but it is as good as any other "deer" cartridge and better than a lot.

To say otherwise is to base your reply purely on your emotional response to the topic at hand without considering the overwhelmingly positive history of this 100 year old cartridge. If you can somehow get past what others say about it, you might have different "feelings" concerning the same. :)

Yup ! Gotta agree with you Gary ! The only one i HATE is the 270 WIN because every GOOF :stirthepot2: who has one thinks its the BEST cartridge there is ! :onCrack: LOL RJ

I disliked the 270 Win for many years despite having several hunting partners that harvested many head of game with them. I even had a couple of 270's myself and shot a few deer with them but I still really didn't like the cartridge until I picked up a pretty rough looking pre-64 M70 Featherweight and refinished it. I overhauled the trigger and glass bedded the action and after scrubbing the copper out of the barrel, I developing a couple of really good loads for it and finally came to the realization that even though there are many deer cartridges as good as the 270, there might not be any that are much better! To me, the only person I'd call a goof are the guys who don't realize what a good cartridge it really is!

I'm surprised nobody mentioned 30 Carbine.

Never owned a 270, as I have always had 7x57, but I can't understand why it's been getting so much bad press on here. Of course, the opinions on this forum aren't likely reflective of the much larger hunting community.

Although the 270 Win. can be utilized in different terrain, it really shines in open country, such as: the Great Plaines, power-line right-away, open fields and clear-cuts. I personally believe it is one of the best choice cartridges for whitetail and mule deer.

Shot a .270 for decades shot many deer ,nice reliable caliber switched to the .280 AI as I wanted a new custom and liked the performance at the range.Shot several deer with it now ,don't think the deer care what caliber killed them they are just as dead..:)

I guess one could mention the 7X57 Mauser. Why is there so much love for it. It doesn't fit in a short action. In a standard action the 280 has an advantage as does a 284 win, the later with a sharper shoulder which should have less stretch. So is it the history behind it? or is it an emotional thing? Maybe the rifles it was chambered in. Heck I like the 7X57 myself but there are a lot of better cartridges. The 7-08 is ballisticly the same and fits in a short action.

The 7x57 is one of my 'favorites'. I would guess the favorable sentiments are the result of how long its been around and how its performed and proven itself over the years. Nothing at all wrong about the other calibres you've mentioned but they've come about years later, somewhat as competitors of the 7x57.
- 7x57 Mauser....1892
- 280................1957
- 7-08...............1958
- 284................1963

Pete, what you said about the 7X57 can be said about any cartridge, in the way for that any one, there is another that does something better. The issue is defining the better, or not. Endless combinations of ballistic gack can be spewed. FPS faster, fractions of an inch of drop, and so on.
To say that it is an emotional thing would be definitely correct. Not sure when it became so necessary for a fella to have to prove his choice, or worse yet, attempt to convince others that his particular choice is "better".
Add marketing hype, and the general basic human requirement to be "better" than the next guy, and then stir in an anonymous forum, and we get 21 pages of spew. Lots of fellas shoot what they shoot, because their Pa did, or because Jack O'Connor did, or because some dude on YouTube does. Does that make it "better"? Why can't they just shoot it, because it works for them, and they like it? That's plenty enough reason for most folks.

Unless specifically mentioning the 270, or the 30-06. One is the original marketing hype cartridge, and the other most shoot because they really don't any better. And neither does anything particularly well.

Many, many times.
The list is quite lengthy, actually.
It isn't really up to me to continue to supplement your faulty memory.
Why do you shoot a 30-06?
